GPIC achieves milestone
in granular urea export

he Gulf Petrochemical Industries
Company (GPIC) announced that it
has exported a total of 10 million tonnes of
granular urea, achieving another milestone
in the company’s history.
The record was achieved on Tuesday,
with the completion of its ship number 341
after 16 years of the urea plant operations,
which started operation in 1998.
A ceremony was held at the
GPIC complex in Sitra to mark the
occasion. The president of the company,
Dr. Abdulrahman Jawahery led the
celebration, which was attended by the
company’s executive Management team
and representatives from the partner
company, Petrochemical Industries
Company (PIC), Kuwait.

of the bids. The lowest bid,

Expressing confidence that
the coming parliamentary
and municipal elections will

ministry said, “The right to
vote and the right to run is one
of the most important pillars
of the democratic process and
that evolve steadily towards a
better future for Bahrain and
Bahrainis.”
Pointing that the political
participation is a fundamental
principle of the principles of
community development,
it added that the citizens
are also responsible for the
social development and state
building. “The real success
will not happen without the
participation in the public life
and give each voice its value.
It is the citizen’s right to
participate in the discussion
of public issues that concern
them. Citizens have the right
to elect those fit to represent
them in the councils and
municipality,” the ministry
said in a statement.
Meanwhile, the ministry
urged the Bahraini families
to introduce democratic
behaviour in their children as
it is an important element in
the development of society and
nation progress. “Participating
in the public life or decisionmaking through the use of
the right to vote and the right
to political participation is a
clear evidence of the validity
of the political climate in the
state, and a milestone for the
state to follow the democratic
approach,” the ministry
opined.

Appeals Court.
The defendant allegedly

he High Criminal Court
handed down a three-year
sentence to a Pakistani man who
attacked a Gulf citizen.
The convict was nabbed after he
had broken the nose of the victim by
punching him on the face.
The incident happened when the
Gulf citizen pursued the defendant’s
son all the way to their apartment,
on account of an obscene gesture.
“His (the defendant’s) son, along
with other children, entered my
shop which is selling women’s
fashion, and they disturbed my
customers. I shouted at them so
they would leave the shop and all of
them did, except his son,” the victim

in front of the door. He suddenly
punched me several times before
I could greet him,” the victim
continued.
The medical report showed that
the attack left the victim with a nasal
fracture.

The evils of war
Dear sir,
War is evil. It does not
respect life. It is cruel,
violent, and usually results
in significant loss of life.
It also results in the massive
destruction of infrastructure
and natural resources.
Most of the casualties of
war are innocent civilians,
particularly
children,
women and old people.
These helpless people
normally would pay the
price of war, for what?
They are just caught in the
middle of a war started
by two opponents, intent
on defeating the other, at
the expense of innocent
civilians.
War also leads to forced
migration,
causing
potentially
large
displacements of population
like what is happening to
Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan,
Libya and other nations.
Palestinians were forced to
leave their homes in Gaza
when Israel decided that it
would like to bombard the
city in an effort to flush out
the ‘Hamas government’ at
the expense of the innocent
children, women and old
people, who had nothing to
do with their war!
More than 2,100 Palestinians
lost their lives during the
50-day war as the world
watched in silence, afraid to
stop Israel from killing these
innocent people.
War normally ends with
the complete destruction
of the opposing territory,
with most of its citizens
killed or enslaved and the
country left in total ruins.
The evils of war could
not be described and
measured.
We can only pray that
on-going wars would stop
and that there would be
no more wars in the future.

Preventing suicide
among the youth
Dear editor,
The picture under the title
‘Writing on the walls’ have
deeper meanings. What
makes youngsters to write
those lines publicly? There is
something behind it which
should be taken seriously into
consideration.
The social conditions, as
well as the family situations,
collectively play a major role
in a person’s life. Imbalance
in any of these aspects may
cause people to commit
suicide or think about the
same.
When dining in restaurants, I
often find some kids lingering,
while their
parents are
happily dining. These kids
are often neglected. The tiny
tots should be given care and
warmth of love in their tender
age.
This will help the kids to lead a
quality life or else they would
end up in committing greater
sins. This would eventually
bring the restlessness in the
family as well as in the society.
Parents
should
always
support, care and love their
kids, because this would make
them feel secured.
Such youth will rarely commit
any sin and even if they
commit any wrongdoing, they
open up to their dear ones
and follow advices.
Increase the bond within the
family and protect our new
generation from committing
suicide.

A warning to crazy drivers
Dear sir,
It was a good thing that
you published that report
about ‘Daredevils on the
road warned’ yesterday in
DT News, because this would
serve as a warning to crazy
drivers who drive like mad
whenever they get behind
the wheel, without total
consideration and regard to
other motorists.
The action taken by the
General Directorate of Traffic
was timely.
I was relieved to hear that
they are now devising new
measures to eliminate this
road menace.
Just this morning, I got a call
from my brother and he was
involved in a road accident
because a crazy driver drove
straight into his car after
jumping a traffic signal.
Thank God that my brother
was not seriously hurt but he
sustained some bruises and a
bump on the head.
Although the car was damaged,
my brother was thankful to be
alive and so was I.
It is high time that we clear the
roads of crazy drivers because
they are really the ones who
are causing traffic accidents in
Bahrain.
They have no right to endanger
the lives of other drivers and
engage in deadly stunts while
driving on the road.

Not much of a laughing matter
I
t has been an interesting week in
economics, which is interesting in its
own right given it is some time since I have
pontificated on economics.
But I have spent much of the last 35 years
writing about business and finance and
quite frankly I find it a bit difficult these
days to find something that could raise a
smirk about the shortage of a secondary
market in sukuk.
Getting a chuckle about the latest moves
in Bahrain credit default swaps is beyond
me these days, largely because I have more
or less forgotten what they are.
This is no big deal because they are
largely irrelevant to anyone outside the
polit bureau of the central bank.
I was pondering this the other day when
people seemed to be getting excited about
a drop in global stock markets followed by
a recovery.
Shares in Europe and US have rebounded
after a turbulent week in which stock
markets tumbled to multi-month lows, I
read.
Well I am somewhat surprised that they
have bounced back because for the life of
me I can’t see why they are anywhere near
the artificial level they have reached.
Concerns that the global economic
recovery was running out of steam, poor
economic and corporate data, along with
worries about the impact of the Ebola crisis,
had sent stock markets into a nosedive.
The FTSE 100 had fallen 10 per cent since
early September, wiping £175billion off the
value of listed businesses.
Wall Street had also taken a bit of a dive
before the short term recovery.
What surprises me about this is that
global stock markets have been rising for
around five years at a time when I can see
no explainable reason why they should have
been heading north.
The underlying economy, in the US, UK
and Europe is as bad now as it was in 2009
and there are no real reasons to suggest that
things in the real economy are getting any
better.
We get the odd statistic about economic
grow finally returning, but when these
statistics are provided by economists they
are immediately rubbished by reality.
You can play about with macroeconomic
numbers until you are blue in the face but
you cannot get over the fact that across the
globe the average punter is now as badly
off as he was in 2008 when economists
were forecasting we were all heading for
Armageddon.
The US Federal Reserve chair Janet
Yellen said the other day that she was
“greatly concerned” about rising inequality
in the US.
The idea that anyone in power in the US
is bothered about inequality amazes me
because caring about inequality is almost
anti-American these days.
Perhaps the US political system is about
to be shaken up by its own version of
UKIP complete with a charismatic leader
who will challenge the main parties by
re-introducing a sort of anti-communist
McCarthyism era.
“I think it is appropriate to ask whether
growing inequality is compatible with
values rooted in our nation’s history,” Ms
Yellen asked.
If history teaches us anything the answer
to that is a resounding yes vote.
Full marks to the Bank of England’s chief
economist, Andy Haldane, for clarity on an
issue normally shrouded in mist, namely
what the bank plans for interest rates.
The other day he said: “Put in plain
English, I am gloomier. This implies
interest rates could remain lower for longer,
certainly than I had expected three months
ago, without endangering the inflation
target”.
If he is indeed gloomier, I think we
should be told in detail just how gloomy
he is.
Things in the UK economy have looked
pretty gloomy for some time.
You know things are getting desperate
when the country has pretty well sold off
all its airports to Spanish and Australian
investors.
Now when people in Spain and Australia
can buy your air infrastructure, you have
real problems.
Let us not forget that both these countries
have airlines that are technically bankrupt
and economies that are somewhat short of
booming.
So Mr Haldane sees an economy writhing
in both agony and ecstasy.
On the one hand, growth here and in the
US right now, according to economists, is
faster than in other big rich economies, and
a big contributor to that growth is business
investment.
That’s the ecstasy. And it is pretty potent
ecstasy, by historical standards.
The agony is that real wages are falling,
productivity or output per hour worked has
not risen for six years. And what households
earn on savings adjusted for consumer
price inflation is more-or-less zero.
In fact Haldane says that we have almost
never endured such a long period of flatness
in wages, savings rates and productivity. So
this is genuine agony.
The problem is that when economists
start getting gloomy it provides serious
problems for politicians.
That is why a lot of misguided Scots
decided that the problem was the English
and why a lot of equally misguided English
people have started blaming Europe.
But Scotland, England and Europe are
largely irrelevant in global politics these
days and we should be more worried about
how others will react.
The US appears to be falling back on its
solution for internal solutions by bombing
bits of the Middle East.
In China, you get the impression that Li
Keqiang is pondering the 25th anniversary
of Tiananmen Square and considering
taking a leaf out of Deng Xiaoping in facing
economic problems and political unrest by
attacking students.
Expect him to send the tanks into Mong
Kok just as soon as Kate Adie can get a
flight to Chek Lap Kok.

repulsed a new attempt by Islamic State (IS)
fighters to cut off the border with Turkey yesterday
as troops battled the jihadists in neighbouring Iraq.
A Kurdish official reported five new US-led
strikes around Kobane overnight as the coalition
kept up its air support for the town’s defenders.
But the US military said that while it saw
some “encouraging” signs, the strikes might not
prevent Kobane’s fall and its priority remained the
campaign against the (IS) group in Iraq.
Heavy IS mortar fire hit the Syrian side of
the border crossing with Turkey which is the
Kurdish fighters’ sole avenue for resupply and the
only escape route for remaining civilians, Kurdish
official Idris Nassen told AFP.
The jihadists launched a fierce attack from the
east towards the border gate before being pushed
back, he added.
IS suffered heavy losses in the fighting and
was forced to send in reinforcements, the Syrian
Observatory for Human Rights said.
The jihadists lost 21 of their people to air strikes
and another 14 in ground fighting on Friday, the
Britain-based monitoring group said. The Kurds
lost three of their fighters.
An AFP correspondent on the Turkish side
reported sporadic mortar fire very close to the
border crossing on Saturday afternoon.
UN Syria envoy Staffan de Mistura warned earlier
this month that about 12,000 civilians remained in

Puff Pastry
l 500gms flour l 250ml water l 10gms salt l 375gms butter For the crisps
l 250gms puff pastry
l 100gms icing sugar
For the pastry cream
l 1 cup milk
l 1 vanilla bean
l 2 egg yolks
l 1 Tbs corn starch
l 50 gms granulated sugar.
For the filling cream
l 1 cup heavy cream
l 50gms caster sugar [mixed with
the seeds from the vanilla bean]
l ½ cup blueberries
l ½ cup raspberries
l 4 large strawberries
How to make?
For the puff pastry, mix the flour,
water and salt together until
smooth dough. Leave the dough
for 15 minutes. Then roll out the
dough and add the butter inside.
Spread again and fold the dough
like a portfolio.
Again leave the dough for 15
minutes in the fridge. Repeat
the action to spread and fold
the dough four times, letting the
dough rest between each. Your
dough is ready to be used and
spread as per your wish.
Cook according to your preparation
but generally a puff pastry is
cooked between 200 and 220*
centigrade.
Once ready, roll down the puff
pastry to a sheet, which is five
millimetres thick. Cut small disks
of five cm diameter each. With
the rolling pin, flatten them down
to a very thin disk using icing
sugar to keep it from sticking
to the table. Put each disk on a
silpad and bake until crisp. And
while it is baking, heat one cup of
milk with one fresh vanilla bean
split open.
In a mixing bowl, mix the egg
yolks and the sugar to a frosty
mix, add the flour [or corn
starch] and pour the boiling milk
over. Place back on the fire and
boil it for two minutes and then
cool on ice. For the whipped cream, beat the
fresh heavy cream on ice [scrap
the inside of the vanilla bean
and add it to the cream], add the
sugar and beat until it ‘peaks’. When the pastry cream is cooled,
foil it in the whipped cream. It
has to have a nice texture and
consistency.
Take each disk at a time, put a
big tablespoon of the prepared
cream in the middle, spread it
around, and place all the berries
on top. Repeat the operation
with three or four disks piled on
each other. Dust with sugar and
decorate the plate as you wish.

Dr. Nagori: Yes, it is true that few changes in dietary habits
before and during menopause can ease/alleviate the
menopausal symptoms like dry skin, weight gain,
hot flushes, bone mineral loss, mood swings,
etc. During menopause, we should eat variety
of foods with more intake of calcium, iron,
zinc, magnesium, fiber-rich foods and drink
plenty of water. We should take a healthy diet
that includes unprocessed/unrefined foods like
lean meats, fish, eggs, beans, legumes, fresh fruits
and vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy products. We
should increase intake of plant-estrogens by eating more soya
milk/flour, linseeds, flax/pumpkins/sunflower seeds, celery, green
beans, etc., which help in hormone balance and try to avoid sugar,
caffeine, spicy foods, alcohol, salt, saturated and trans-fats.
2. Is it true that eating five small meals throughout the day is
better than eating three big ones. Don’t they amount to the same
number of calories and does it also matter what food items should
be in the first meal and what is in the last one? -Shawna K.
Dr. Nagori: No, it is not true. You can organize
your diet frequency (3 to 5) whichever is
convenient, enjoyable and sustainable for
your body as per your schedule, lifestyle and
personal preferences. But most important
is to eat the right amount of total calories
as per body needs with balanced nutrients
(proteins, carbs, fats, vitamins and minerals)
from right sources. It is better to start your day
with water, proteins in breakfast, balanced meal in

Everything is well measured
and framed, with a case of stellar
capture of the characters’ emotions
and body language.
Annabelle Wallis was great in her
role as Mia, and every movement of
hers had a reason, most pleasingly
natural, attached to it.
She seemed stitched into the
seams of the movie’s mood, all the
while immensely contributing to
what made the better parts of the
drama, always carrying it with grace
and supple confidence even in the
face of clamouring factors.
Ward Horton was very controlled
in his performance, while Alfre
Woodard seemed very artificial and
unconvincing in whatever she was
attempting to portray.
Annabelle is primarily a drama
that provides only a hint, a faint
twinge, of what true horror movies
deserve to be like.
It otherwise fits comfortably
into an end that is not truly worth
the anticipation and all the more
disappointing in a revelatory sense
of speaking.

which do not demonstrate the required experience records will be rejected.

Angry India may scrap 2016

angry Indian cricket board
(BCCI) which is also considering legal actions and seeking intervention of the game’s
world governing body.
The tourists abandoned the
series with another one-dayer,
a Twenty20 international and
three test matches left to play
over a protracted payment
dispute between the players
and their board.
The West Indies Cricket
Board (WICB) said it had
been left with no choice but
to abandon the tour of India,
an action that angered the
world’s richest cricket body,
who swiftly roped in Sri Lanka
as replacements to play a five-

match ODI series next month.
“It will be very difficult to
play West Indies in bilateral
series in future. They have to
demonstrate the willingness
that such situations never
happen again,” BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel said.
The Indian cricket team is
scheduled to tour the Caribbean for three tests, five ODIs
and a Twenty20 match early in
2016.
“We thank our friends Sri
Lanka who agreed to the tour
on a short notice but unfortunately we couldn’t fit in the
tests as there was not enough
time.”
The BCCI was considering
legal actions against WICB
and has called an emergent
working committee meeting
on Tuesday to discuss the issue, Patel said.
