Anger mounts in Hungary over internet tax Budapest A proposed Hungarian tax on internet usage has sparked new accusations of an antidemocratic crackdown in the EU member as tens of thousands are expected to march against the measure today. Economy Minister Mihaly Varga said on Tuesday that the tax -- 150 forints (0.50 euros, $0.61) on each transferred gigabyte of data -- was needed to plug holes in the 2015 budget of one of the EU’s most indebted nations. He also said the tax was fair as it reflected a shift by consumers to the internet away from phone lines. The idea has triggered alarm, including from Nellie Kroes, the EU’s digital chief, who tweeted that the tax was “a shame for users and a shame for the Hungarian government”. It is indeed time to turn to save-electricity mode by turning off the AC and invest on clothes that keep you warm. Well, while the whole citizens and residents of Bahrain are eagerly awaiting the chilling winter season, many school children are weary about the impending season as they are expected to wake up before dawn and get ready to go to school putting up with the teeth-grinding cold! ‘Early to bed and early to rise ‘does indeed make a good adage but is often perceived by some to be difficult to practise. The school timings in Bahrain including the other parts of GCC are normally between 7.30 to 2pm which seems to be quite in favour of aforesaid dictum. Although schools in some countries start only at 9am in the morning, the practice of early timings in Bahrain is indeed a good one. It habituates the children to wake up early in the morning Goodbye millennium flower! - everyday and thereby giving them enough time for themselves and to foster their innate talents. However, as many would concur, it is extremely difficult for everyone including the elders to wake up early in the morning during the winter season. If elders find it difficult to wake up early in the morning, it is anybody’s surmise how difficult it would be for the tiny tots to do so! The children who stay in the city ought to wake up as early as 5am. Overlooking the chilling cold, they have to get ready for the school and board their school transport by around 6am. If children have to wake up this early, it goes without saying how early the parents need to wake up to prepare their children to school. Further, parents have to inevitably go to bed early as they have to wake up early the next morning! It is an established fact that good sleep is an essential precondition to effective learning and good memory. The smaller children need much more sleep than the grown up ones. (The author who has studied psychology firmly believes in this fact) What is the solution then? How about having different school timing for the school children exclusively during the winter season? Will the Ministry concerned look into the pros and cons of this? Do the private school managements have the liberty and authority to make the necessary changes and if they do, are they ready to be flexible on this matter keeping the best interests of the school students? It is always heartbreaking to read about young people who turn to suicide as a means of escaping their problems, when they could always turn to members of their own families for guidance and support. According to your report yesterday, Stella left a suicide note and it seemed that the girl was a victim of bullying in school. The report indicated that ‘the note pointed fingers at one of the students in Stella’s school, who had allegedly been harassing her for the past two years.’ It did not say whether it was a boy or a girl who was harassing Stella but definitely, whoever it was, he or she had a big role in the girl’s suicide. It is just a waste to lose such a beautiful and talented girl to suicide. Stella had her whole life ahead of her and a bright future because she was a good student in school. Jacqueline Sunday, October 26, 2014 Global appeal ignored IRAN HANgS woMAN Arthur Macmillan Tehran I ran yesterday hanged a woman convicted of murdering a former intelligence officer she claimed had tried to sexually assault her, defying international appeals for a stay of execution. Reyhaneh Jabbari, 26, who had been on death row for five years, was put to death at dawn, the official IRNA news agency quoted the Tehran prosecutor’s office as saying. The execution drew condemnation from the United States and human rights monitor Amnesty International, which dubbed it “a bloody stain on Iran’s human rights record” and “an affront to justice”. A message posted on the homepage of a Facebook campaign set up to try to save Jabbari noted the “sad news” of her death, adding the words “Rest in Peace” alongside pictures of her as a young child. Ms. Jabbari, an interior designer, was executed for the fatal 2007 stabbing of Morteza Abdolali Sarbandi. The United Nations and human rights groups had said a confession to her crime was obtained under intense pressure and threats from Iranian prosecutors, and that she should have had a retrial. Iranian actors and other prominent figures had campaigned for clemency on Ms. Jabbari’s behalf, echoing similar calls in the West. The judiciary had given several deadlines for Sarbandi’s family to spare Ms. Jabbari under an Islamic sharia law provision that allows a death sentence for murder to be commuted to jail time. (AFP) A screenshot of the Facebook page dedicated to Ms. Jabbari. No clemency B Ms. Jabbari ut relatives of Sarbandi, a 47-year-old surgeon who earlier worked for the intelligence ministry, refused the pleas, demanding, according to Iranian media, that she tell “the truth.” A UN human rights monitor said the killing came in self-defence after Sarbandi tried to sexually abuse Jabbari, and that the condemned woman’s trial in 2009 had been deeply flawed. But a medical report, prepared for the judiciary and quoted by IRNA in its dispatch, said Sarbandi was stabbed in the back and that the killing had been premeditated. Efforts for a commuted jail sentence had intensified in recent weeks but Sarbandi’s family and Ms. Jabbari remained at loggerheads over the circumstances of the killing. According to Jalal Sarbandi, the victim’s eldest son, Ms. Jabbari testified that a man was present in the apartment where his father was killed but she had refused to reveal his identity. Ms. Jabbari’s mother was allowed to visit her for one hour on Friday. US, Britain condemn F ollowing Ms. Jabbari’s death, the US State Department issued a statement that cited “serious concerns with the fairness” of her trial, including “reports of confessions made under severe duress.” “We join our voice with those who call on Iran to respect the fair trial guarantees afforded to its people under Iran’s own laws and its international obligations,” spokeswoman Jen Psaki added. Britain voiced similar concerns and called on the Islamic republic to halt its use of the death penalty. “Actions like these do not help Iran build confidence or trust with the international community. I urge Iran to put a moratorium on all executions,” said Foreign Office Minister Tobias Ellwood. According to the United Nations, more than 250 people have been executed in Iran since the beginning of 2014. Amnesty’s deputy director for the Middle East and North Africa, Hassiba Hadj Sahraoui, said Ms. Jabbari’s death was “disappointing in the extreme”. Middle east 9 LAFFER – THE BEST MEDICINE Not only, but also arthur Macdonald I ts strikes me that in both Bahrain and Britain politics are becoming a bit banal. To be fair some people in Bahrain are getting a bit more excited about the forthcoming elections than is the case in the UK. No one seems to be running around burning cars in Britain or committing meaningless acts of sabotage and violence. But while I have to condemn those who are carrying out these acts I do get a feeling that there is something positive about the fact that people are that excited about the outcome of the forthcoming plebiscite. In Britain, the prospects of voting next year is a bit of a yawn when it comes to wondering what any party actually stands for. We are all well aware that the only really radical party is the UK Independence Party who have rather set the heather on fire by having a clear policy that involves us leaving the European Union. They will doubtless win a bye-election next month but come the General Election they will probably lose that seat and are unlikely to have more than a handful of members of parliament, if that, when the votes are counted and the results are in. What they have achieved, however, is to throw a bit of a googly at the major parties in where they stand in terms of issues of immigration and membership of the European club. Both Labour and the Conservatives seem to have risen to this challenge by moving to the right. But the bottom line is that there is practically no immigration worth talking about in the UK while leaving the European Union is almost certainly not popular with anyone other than empire loyalists in the Tory Party. Out of a total population of more than 60 million people we have about two million immigrants. That is not much compared to Bahrain where the split between expats and locals is about 50-50. By and large no one in Bahrain is all that bothered about the large expat community, which is why the hospitality of Bahrainis makes the Kingdom one among the favourite spots for expatriates. Bahrain has been chosen as the fifth best destination by expatriates in the world. According to the seventh Expat Explorer Survey, most of the people prefer Bahrain to improve their job prospects and maintain work-life balance. Switzerland tops the list as an all-round expat destination. Singapore stands in the second place followed by China and Germany. Now it has to be said that puts the small island of Bahrain in some pretty impressive company. By comparison there are not really all that many people looking for a future by moving to the UK other than people who are desperately poor and have few skills. Which brings me back to politics and the forthcoming elections? What are the main issues before the electorate in Bahrain? Quite frankly I haven’t got a clue and that is not because I am back in Britain, because I used to wonder how people made political choices when I still lived in Adliya. If the track record of elected members in Bahrain is anything to go by then I presume they should be competing at the polls on who wants to close the most things. Closing things in my limited experience is the only thing MPs want to do. Whether it be cinemas, Shisha cafes, public bars or Gulf Air, the only policies I remember reading about from the democratically elected house were negative. I may have missed out on this but I do not remember any calls for better public transport, improved cleansing services or closer trade links with the rest of the world ever appearing on parliament’s agenda. Policies like these tend to come from ministers and the Shura Council, who thankfully also tend to pour cold water of the parliament’s more fiery negative proposals. There is an argument that I have made in columns I have written in Bahrain for years, which I shall repeat here. If you want meaningful elections providing the kind of services and investment that Bahrain deserves and needs then someone has to pay for it. To have a say in that, the electorate have to pay in the form of taxation. That is something Britain and much of the west appear to have forgotten. We want the services, but throughout the Thatcher and Blair years we seem to have forgotten we have to pay for them. All the main parties here are in favour of the National Health Service but no one wants to pay for it. We all have to learn that if we want politicians to provide us with everything from defence to development and economic growth we have to pay for it or do without. There is a thing in economics called the Laffer Curve. It dictates that if a government wants to provide services then it must maximise tax take. Tax take increases as you increase rates until it reaches a point where further rate rises in fact reduce the amount of revenue government gets. In the UK, we are far short of that point and we have to accept that if we want good services we have to move up the curve. If Bahrain wants to prosper as a democracy it is time that it got on the curve, at whatever level. Burning candidates’ cars or burying your head in the sand, as we have been doing in the UK, is not the answer. Put that in your Shisha and smoke it – while you still can. 10 MIDDLE EAST NUGGETS Aircraft pound IS Washington The US-led military coalition pounded the Islamic State group on Friday and yesterday, with 22 air strikes in Iraq and one in Syria, the Pentagon said. Eleven of the bombings in the heavy barrage targeted IS units, buildings, positions and vehicles near the strategic Mosul Dam, US Central Command, which is overseeing the air war against the jihadists, said in a statement. A further four strikes hit near Fallujah, while others targeted Bayji, Qurayat al Hajjaj and other locations in Iraq. These raids were carried out by US and coalition partners, using bombers, fighter jets, and unmanned drones. The clashes in the divided area of Handarat just north of Aleppo, came a day after fighting that killed 15 soldiers and pro-regime militia as well as 12 rebels, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. “Rebels from all the main factions have launched an operation to try to secure the Handarat area,” said Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman. “They are trying to expel the army from hills captured by the regime in recent days,” Abdel Rahman told AFP. Sunday, October 26, 2014 LEBANON TROOPS ATTACK GUNMEN Unending extremism Tripoli (Lebanon) ebanese troops attacked Islamist gunmen holed up in the historic market of the northern city of Tripoli yesterday, after deadly clashes rocked the long-time tourist attraction, an AFP correspondent reported. A civilian caught in the crossfire and a gunman were killed, while nine soldiers, eight civilians and six militants were wounded, in fighting that broke out in the city’s souks late Friday, a security official told AFP. It was the first time since the civil war in neighbouring Syria erupted in 2011 that violence had spread to the market in Tripoli’s historic centre, which is on the shortlist for possible selection as a UNESCO world heritage site. Elsewhere in northern Lebanon, a clash broke out L in the Akkar region near the Syrian border, after unidentified gunmen tried to cut off a main road. Troops killed two militants in the fighting, the army said, adding that the road had been reopened. The fighting came nearly three months after a battle in eastern Lebanon between the army and jihadists from Syria’s Al-Qaeda branch and the Islamic State (IS) group. It broke out after gunmen attacked an army patrol on Friday in the Khan Al-Askar area, near the heart of the coastal city, wounding four soldiers. The gunmen then took up position in the market’s narrow alleyways and, after a night of heavy fighting, the army launched an assault. Cairo state of emergency came into force yesterday across much of Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula after 30 soldiers were killed in a suicide car bombing by suspected jihadists. It was the deadliest attack on the country’s security forces since the army deposed Islamist president Mohamed Morsi last year, to the fury of his supporters. The state of emergency in the north and centre of the Sinai will remain in place for three months, the president’s office said. A curfew is in force from 5 A pm to 7 am. Egypt also announced it would close the Rafah crossing into the Gaza Strip, the only route into the Palestinian territory not controlled by Israel. “The army and the police will take all necessary measures to tackle the dangers of terrorism and its financing, to preserve the security of the region... and protect the lives of citizens,” the presidential decree said. "We are stuck between the army and the gunmen," resident Motassem al-Masri told AFP by telephone. "My brother is wounded, but the Red Cross is unable to enter the area. We are begging the army to let us out," said Masri, adding that he could see gunmen on the street. Armed Forces to discuss what measures to implement under the state of emergency. After the meeting, Sisi told reporters that Friday’s attack was carried out with “external support” in order to “break the will of the Egyptian people and army”. The attack in an agricultural area of El-Arish, the main town in north Sinai, also wounded 29 troops, medics said, including a senior army official and five officers. (AFP) ighting between rebels and tribesmen allied to Al Qaeda has left dozens dead in central Yemen, while a suspected US drone strike killed 10 jihadists, tribal sources said yesterday. Clashes broke out on Friday evening when Huthi fighters trying to wrest control of the mountains around the central town of Rada, in Baida province, met resistance from militias, tribal sources said. “They were repelled each time with heavy losses,” a tribal source told AFP by telephone. “The fighting killed dozens, particularly among Huthi ranks.” Another tribal source said Huthi rebels had been trying to bolster their presence in the province after failing to take full control of Rada. The source said Huthi fighters were assisted by artillery units from the Yemeni army, although this could not be independently verified. Viva l’Italia,” the two fashion house chiefs said in a statement. “The Italian Supreme Court of Justice found Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana not guilty of tax evasion,” a company press release said. In April an Italian appeals court had upheld a guilty verdict against Dolce and Gabbana for evading taxes totalling 200 million euros ($277 million). Dolce and Gabbana, whose celebrity clients include Beyonce and Madonna, T were accused of having transferred control of their brands to a shell company in Luxembourg in 2004 and 2005 to avoid paying Italian taxes. Prosecutors had argued that setting up the Luxembourg company Gado -- an acronym of the surnames of the two designers -- while the operation was being run out of Italy was a bid to defraud the state. They were found guilty in June 2013, and given 20-month jail sentences, which they appealed. Dolce and Gabbana were originally accused of tax evasion of around one billion euros, but the court ruled that just 200 million euros of that sum was relevant. On Friday the Supreme Court annulled the conviction, declaring that the prosecution case was “unfounded” and ending the case, Italian media reported.(AFP) tackers to slow them down in a tower defence format similar to the wildly popular Plants vs Zombies. We had a very good run during the period mentioned. Tahir Haneef [email protected] F ollowing are the edited excerpts from an Interview with John Hague, Senior VicePresident of ASPENTECHranked 11 in the Forbes’ Most Innovative Growth Companies list. DT News: Tell us about Aspentech’s collaboration with universities? DT News: What kind of challenges and opportunities do you see in Bahrain and in GCC countries? The challenges are twofold a. New world-class oil and gas plants are coming up in the Middle East, and all these plants need to operate most optimally in a very competitive environment. b. People challenge- a lot of new hires are joining these industries and they all need to be trained and made industry ready in the shortest possible time. These are the challenges that we see for the industry in general and that is where our opportunities are present. We have to help our customers bring their young workers up to speed. For example, in universities, our software is part of the engineering curriculum. Many companies use our software to train their new engineers. DT News: Gap between the theory and practice, what is the time required to cover that gap? For someone new to the industry, it may take a year or two years to become a stronglyfunctioning chemical engineer. But what companies really want is the young engineers to step into the role and learn quickly. DT News: Is that where Aspentech pitch in to help its clients? Yes. Correct. Aspentech helps in Optimisation of three areas of business. 1. Design and simulation. 2. Manufacturing and execution software 3. Supply chain We help companies to achieve optimisation through “operational excellence”. Our softwares help them in cutting costs and in improving production, change the production plan with the change in market demand, as well as simulate different scenarios for production and supply chain. DT News: So it means, you need to build a lot of trust with your customers? Yes. Our approach is very consultative. And, our people’s role is to help companies understand the opportunities that our tools and technology can open up for them. DT News: Optimisation, can it backfire? I don’t think so. Optimisation maximises through puts or minimises raw material consumption or achieves similar targets, and is modelled around constraints and is fine-tuned to the last detail. Constraints are often set by companies with long experience, and hence the chances are negligible. I have been with Aspentech since ’95 and we never had a situation in which our clients faced a problem like that. DT News: How much can Aspentech software manage sudden changes of plans or setbacks? If for example if there is a change regarding the amount of gasoline produced in a refinery in a month, our system takes only 15 minutes to rerun the plan and come up with a feasible plan. And, for chemicals it is much more impressive. DT News: How will fall in oil price affect your business? Historically we had both effects; it had boosted as well as impaired our business at different times. A major disruptive event happening in the world is Shale Gas and it has driven down Natural Gas prices below $4. Six or seven new ethylene facility is coming upon Gulf coast today and more are in line to be constructed. This is going to have significant impact on ethylene supply. Now, Shale gas has put US almost on equal footing with Middle East regarding cost of production. Hence, now, operational excellence and optimisation have become very important. So when prices crash some companies may pull back, but others would go for process improvement and increase their spending. So it is a mix of positive and negative. Hence, the slide in oil prices has a neutral effect on our revenue. DT News: Fall in Natural Gas prices has been happening for the last few years. Hence, you must be very comfortable now in facing such a scenario in oil? Yes. We are very comfortable with this scenario. There is a huge amount of construction in ethylene sector. This sector is In Bahrain University, the senior project is based on our software. Like that, we have tied up with universities across the globe to contribute to the curriculum. Our company was founded 30 years ago and it came out of an MIT project. We have a very strong background in Universities; we have an advisory team of Professors from Universities across the globe. BUSINESS Sunday, October 26, 2014 14 Anger mounts in Hungary over internet tax INTERNET DISTRESS Budapest proposed Hungarian tax on internet usage has sparked new accusations of an anti-democratic crackdown in the EU member as tens of thousands are expected to march against the measure today. Economy Minister Mihaly Varga said Tuesday that the tax -150 forints (0.50 euros, $0.61) on each transferred gigabyte of data -- was needed to plug holes in the 2015 budget of one of the EU’s most indebted nations. He also said the tax was fair as it reflected a shift by consumers to the internet away from phone lines. The idea has triggered alarm, including from Nellie Kroes, the EU’s digital chief, who tweeted that the tax was “a shame for users and a shame for the Hungarian government”. Astronauts at the orbiting lab manipulated the space station’s robotic arm to detach the Dragon on time, at 9:57 am (1357 GMT), in what the US space agency called a “very clean release.” The capsule was set to splash S down five and a half hours later in the Pacific Ocean, near the Mexican coast, slowed by three enormous parachutes. The unmanned craft, which has been docked in orbit since September 23, will be carrying back some 3,800 pounds (1,700 kilograms) of materials, including results from experiments conducted on the space station. The SpaceX vessel is the only spacecraft currently capable of returning with cargo. Its last mission to ISS was in April. It had delivered more than 5,000 pounds (2,200 kilograms) of cargo, including freeze-dried meals, 20 live lab mice and a 3D printer, in its fourth contracted mission to the orbiting lab. The lab mice are the first live mammals to hitch a ride aboard a commercial cargo ship, and they are enclosed in a NASAmade research cage for studying the effects of weightlessness on their bodies. The 3-D printer is the first of its kind to demonstrate how the technology can be used in space, even without gravity to assist the process. The Dragon return Saturday kicks off a week of heavy traffic to and from the orbiting science lab. Monday evening, Orbital Sciences is scheduled to launch its unmanned Cygnus capsule from the Wallops Island space center, on the coast of Virginia, and should arrive November 2 at ISS at the same dock that held Dragon.(AFP) IMF fights negative interest rates Washington he International Monetary Fund announced a minimum interest rate on its unique SDR currency as it fights off the impact of sagging interest rates and deflation from major economies. The IMF said that from Monday it would maintain a floor rate of 0.05 percent, or five basis points, on its special drawing rights or SDR currency, which represents a basket of the currencies of its largest members. Currently the rate the Fund pays on the money its members lend to it T is 3 basis points. That is also the basis for the global crisis lender’s loan rate to borrowers. With short-term rates for key SDR components the euro and the yen now running below zero, and the dollar and pound rates barely above zero, that risked pulling the SDR rate down to a negative level as well, a senior fund official explained. “Under the current rule there is nothing to stop the SDR rate from going negative,” he said. “Financially, it would be a somewhat perverse situation because our creditor members would be paying for providing us resources.” But it also acknowledges a worry the IMF, top central bankers, and bond market traders have been expressing of major economies sinking toward deflation. “This is a reflection of the fact that central banks have set very low interest rates, or even negative,” the official said. To meet the challenge of historically low rates as well, the official said, the IMF will round its rates to three decimal points instead of two as in the past. (AFP) Renault chief sees auto market slowing Shanghai rench carmaker Renault chairman, Carlos Ghosn, said yesterday that he expects slower growth in Europe’s auto market next year as it continues to recover from the global economic crisis. Ghosn, who is also Renault’s chief executive officer, said the European market was growing at six percent so far this year -- the best since the 2007 crisis. “I’m expecting in 2015 this recovery to continue,” Ghosn told journalists on the sidelines of an industry forum in China’s commercial hub Shanghai. “I don’t see another six percent increase. I think the increase will probably be more moderate than six percent... in line with GDP (gross domestic product) growth,” he said, but gave no estimates for Renault alone. Ghosn is also president and chief executive officer of Japan’s Nissan Motor Co. through an alliance between the companies. Many foreign carmakers turned to China, the world’s largest auto market, in the wake of the global crisis as their home markets in the United States or Europe collapsed. China’s auto market is now slowing as well, as weaker domestic economic growth and a corruption crackdown take their toll. But Ghosn said Renault and Nissan were committed to adding production in China. In late 2013, Renault signed an agreement with Chinese company Dongfeng to set up a joint venture that will start production in 2016 with initial capacity of 150,000 vehicles a year. Nissan has an F Carlos Ghosn existing partnership with state-backed Dongfeng, China’s second largest automaker. The two companies last month announced they plan to produce Infiniti luxury cars along with their current offerings. “We’re adding capacity (in China),” Ghosn told business executives after a speech at the China Europe International Business School. “We don’t believe the slowdown in China is going to be longterm because the fundamentals are still pointing towards a very good development of the industry,” he said. China’s auto sales rose just 2.5 percent year-on-year in September, the slowest growth for any month this year, to 1.98 million vehicles. Last year, auto sales in China reached 21.98 million vehicles.(AFP) BUSINESS 15 ANTI-JOB REFORM RALLY IN ROME Sunday, October 26, 2014 Rome ome one million Italians took to the streets of Rome yesterday for a demonstration organised by Italy’s largest trade union to protest Prime Minister Matteo Renzi’s plans to overhaul the labour market. As hundreds of thousands of S Youth unemployment in the eurozone’s third largest economy stands at a record 44.2 pc. Italians snaked through the capital calling for Renzi to do more to boost employment and protect the rights of new entries to the job market, organisers put the number of protesters at one million and called on the premier to take note. “We want work for everyone, and work with rights. This is a demonstration for those without work, without rights, those who suffer, who have no certainties for the future,” Susanna Camusso, head of the CGIL, told the crowds. “We are here and we’re not going away. We will strike, and use all our strength to fight to change this government’s policies,” she said, announcing the unions would hold another demo on November 8. Renzi’s measures “are not sufficient to change the path Italy is on,” she added. Thousands of young people from all over the country waved the red flags of the CGIL, singing the national anthem and letting off flares in front of the Colosseum to say ‘no’ to the so-called “Jobs Act”. “He said he wanted to see us and count us. Here we are Renzi, count us!”, a protester in Rome’s San Giovanni’s square yelled with a megaphone. Youth unemployment in the eurozone’s third largest economy stands at a record 44.2 percent and those who do manage to find work are often employed on temporary contracts which offer little in the way of security or benefits. “We want investments in the future,” one young person shouted, while another held up a banner with a sarcastic “thanks for the ‘solution’ to our problems Renzi”, and a picture of someone vomiting. “We have no intention of giving up. Renzi must know that to change the country, he needs us, those here in the streets of Rome today,” said Maurizio Landini, head of the FIOM union, which joined the CGIL protest. Renzi’s centre-left Democratic Party (PD) is split over the proposed measures, with the deepest division caused by a debate over the future of Article 18, a law which currently protects those who are unfairly dismissed. In his bid to reboot Italy’s economy and lure in foreign investors, Renzi wants to make it easier for companies to fire people and introduce a system by which job protection and benefits are earned by workers over time. But unions and many on the left are furious over the mooted changes and he has been accused of being a Thatcherite. Court authorises extradition of Kazakh 25 eurozone banks fail ECB health check tycoon Ablyazov Lyon A French court authorised the extradition of exiled Kazakh oligarch Mukhtar Ablyazov to Russia and Ukraine, despite concerns over his safety if the move goes ahead. Ablyazov, a former minister turned opposition figure and banker turned fugitive, is wanted by Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan on embezzlement charges which he says were trumped up by his arch-foe Nursultan Nazarbayev, the president of his oil-rich nation. After months on the run he was arrested on the French Riviera in July last year and France has since been grappling with the vast and tangled case of what to do with the 51-year-old. The court in the southeast city of Lyon said priority would be given to Russia for the extradition. The scale of the embezzlement alleged by Moscow of $5 billion (four billion euros) is far greater than that alleged by Ukraine of $400 million. A French court had already Alma Shalabayeva (left), wife of Kazakh oligarch Mukhtar Ablyazov, an opposition figure wanted by Russia and Ukraine on embezzlement charges, and relatives hold signs as they protest a French court’s decision authorising Ablyazov’s extradition at a courthouse. ruled in favour of his extradition in January, but this decision was subsequently overturned by an appeals court in April and the case was re-examined. Ablyazov was once a member of the inner circle of the Kazakhstan elite and served as energy and trade minister before his fall from grace. He was jailed in 2002 for abuse of power and illegal business activities after co-founding and leading an opposition party, in a move widely seen as a bid to silence him. He was quickly pardoned and released, however, and became chief executive of the BTA bank, which was nationalised in 2009 after facing collapse when the global financial crisis struck. Soon after, Ablyazov fled to Britain over accusations he had stolen billions of dollars in state and investors’ funds from the bank, which also had interests in Ukraine and Russia. However he did not have an easy time in London where his passport was seized and assets frozen as BTA filed numerous civil claims against him. He fled London sometime in 2012 after he was sentenced to 22 months in jail for contempt of court for trying to hide assets. The father-of-four is then thought to have moved to Italy before private detectives tracked him to a villa in the south of France. Ablyazov’s supporters believe he will be in danger wherever he is extradited to. Chess legend Garry Kasparov, whose demand last week to testify in the case was turned down, believes Moscow will hand the oligarch over to Kazakhstan.(AFP) London ome 25 eurozone banks have failed a health check by the European Central Bank, reports claimed yesterday, citing leaked documents. Nearly one in five of the 130 banks surveyed failed the stress test, the Wall Street Journal and the Daily Telegraph said, ahead of the publication of the official results by the ECB today. The unprecedented health check of eurozone banks comes before the ECB assumes the role of the region’s banking supervisor next month. The Frankfurt-based institution takes on its new watchdog role on November 4 and S it hopes that a “comprehensive assessment” -- made up of a socalled asset quality reviews and a “stress test” -- will uncover any potentially nasty surprises beforehand. The failing banks were thought to be in Ireland, Italy, Greece and Austria and will have until November 10 to fill in capital shortfalls, the paper reported. The banks were already given a preliminary indication of their outcome on Thursday. Brazilians vote today in a run-off to choose the next leader of the world’s seventhlargest economy, with the incumbent in the lead by six to eight points, according to the two top polling firms, after weeks of a statistical dead heat that fueled a vitriolic, no-holdsbarred campaign. Rousseff, 66, a former guerrilla who was jailed and tortured for fighting Brazil’s 1964-1985 dictatorship, spent yesterday morning in her southern stronghold of Porto Alegre, where she was holding a march. Supporters from Taiwan and abroad waved placards reading “equal marriage rights” and “support gay marriage” as they marched through the capital for the 12th annual “Walk in Queers’ Shoes” parade. Gay and lesbian groups in Taiwan, one of Asia’s more liberal societies, have been urging the government for years to legalise same-sex marriage. Parliament started reviewing a bill on the issue last year. But activists marching yesterday expressed mixed opinions about the future of the bill, with some predicting it would not survive strong opposition from anti-gay marriage groups who staged a massive counterrally late last year. “Conservative forces have been lobbying hard against the bill and accused us of demanding privileges, when we are asking for equal rights,” said organiser Albert Yang. But others, like graduate student Wang Chunling, were hopeful that Taiwan would join the global trend of recognising same-sex unions. “Equal marriage right is a basic human right and I hope the conservative and religious groups will be more tolerant and less narrow-minded,” Wang said. Moskovsky Komsomolets daily ran a cartoon of man hanging himself on the hands of a clock, saying: “I’m so sick of you changing all the time.” But health officials reassured citizens that the move back to winter time was harmless. “Dark mornings have a worse effect on people’s state of health than dark evenings,” the head of sleep medicine at the Federal Medical and Biological Agency, Alexander Kalinkin, told TASS state news agency. A poll by VTsIOM state agency this month found 17 percent of Russians opposed a move to winter time, while 40 percent said they did not care and 39 percent backed the move. Russia’s full 11 time zones will also be restored after Medvedev had cut down the number of time zones to nine by merging several zones, prompting street protests in the far eastern city of Kamchatka. Korea lashes out at US over human rights ‘racket’ Seoul N orth Korea yesterday vowed strong action to counter a US attack on its human rights record and issued fresh warnings that the United States was in range of its nuclear weapons. The threat follows a damning UN inquiry into North Korea’s human rights record, with the judge who led the investigation urging the world body this week to seek war crimes prosecutions for the regime. Pyongyang said the United States was behind the UN move, with the North’s powerful National Defence Commission (NDC) accusing Washington of resorting to “an unprecedented human rights racket” aimed at destroying its sovereignty. In September, US Secretary of State John Kerry denounced human rights abuses in North Korea and urged Pyongyang to shut down its penal colonies riddled with “barbarity and inhumanity.” Washington “will have to pay dearly for this generation after generation”, the NDC said in a statement carried by the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). Colombian rebel jailed for 27 years Washington former commander of Colombia’s leftist FARC rebels was jailed for 27 years on Friday for his role in the 2003 kidnap of three US citizens held captive for five years, the US Justice Department said. Alexander Beltran Herrera, 38, pleaded guilty in March to three counts of hostage-taking relating to the abduction of Marc Gonsalves, Thomas Howes and Keith Stansell. The three men were taken prisoner by FARC fighters after their aircraft crashed deep in the Colombian jungle. Two other men -- US national Thomas Janis and Colombian Luis Alcides Cruz -- were murdered near the crash site by the rebels. Gonsalves, Howes and Stansell ended up being held for 1,967 days before they were finally freed during a daring 2008 rescue by Colombian forces. US assistant attorney general John Carlin said Beltran Herrera’s jailing in the United States “underscores our resolve to pursue and bring to justice those who target our citizens with violence anywhere in the world.” A John Kerry Russian clocks back to permanent Winter Time Moscow ussia today is set to turn back its clocks to winter time permanently in a move backed by President Vladimir Putin, reversing a three-year experiment with non-stop summer time that proved highly unpopular. Russia will also tinker with its time zones in order to revert to the full 11 zones from Kamchatka in the Pacific to Kaliningrad on the borders of the European Union -- reduced to nine by previous president Dmitry Medvedev. In one of his highest-profile reforms, Medvedev had backed Russia’s move to permanent Summer Time (Greenwich Mean Time plus four hours) in 2011 on the basis that changing clocks upset people’s biorhythms and made for “unhappy cows”. But the change provoked a rumble of protest, wtih many Russians unhappy at getting up an hour earlier on pitchdark winter mornings. In July, Putin -- known for rarely making public appearances in the morning -- signed a law bringing back winter time (GMT plus three hours). He ruled that the clocks henceforth would never change to summer time. There had been delays in the counting of parliamentary ballots and no results had been received so far, a spokesman for the Independent Electoral Commission, Osupile Maroba, told AFP. “We are still on track for the release of final results by the end of the day (Saturday),” said Maroba. The parliamentary results will determine who will be president for the next five years. The incumbent leader, Ian Khama of the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP), is expected to win a second term. The landlocked, diamond-rich southern African country of two million people is seen as one of the continent’s strongest democracies, and electoral authorities said the Friday vote saw a high turnout of the B 800,000 registered voters. Early results, based on IECverified counts from 200 of the 490 local council voting districts, showed the ruling BDP won less than half the 13 wards counted Parliamentary results will determine who will be president for the next five years. so far in the capital Gaborone. Two opposition groups -- the newly formed Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) coalition and the Botswana Congress Party won three -- took seven of the city’s wards. That appeared to be a sharp reversal for the BDP, which in the last election in 2009 won 22 of Gaborone’s 30 wards. “These polls are important, we are tired of having just one party take it all,” said Paul Metsing, a UDC supporter. “The UDC has so far done well so far, given its lack of experience in contesting the elections,” he said. We are impressed with the progress, especially the conduct of voters at polling stations,” said a member of the SADC mission, speaking on condition of anonymity. The right-wing leader, whose Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came to power in a landslide election in May, has never given a press conference and prefers using state media as well as his huge Facebook and Twitter following to communicate with the masses. But in an apparent break from the approach passed on by his predecessors -- who similarly shunned regular media interactions -- he addressed more than 200 journalists at BJP headquarters in New Delhi, pledging to meet them more often. “I am looking for ways to strengthen my relationship with you and... I will try to find time to meet you more often,” said the Hindu nationalist, an announcement welcomed by journalists who have complained of a lack of two-way communication with the new government. He has carefully controlled his communication strategy since coming to power, mostly choosing the state-backed Doordarshan broadcaster and All India Radio to address India’s 1.2 bil- lion-strong population. He is also immensely popular on Facebook and Twitter -- where he has 24 million “likes” and 7.3 million followers respectively -- and uses these websites as platforms to express his views and make announcements. Journalists are often asked to refer to official press statements and Modi’s Twitter feed for news, leaving private news organisations grumbling over Modi’s one-way interaction which they say offers no debate and shields him from tough questions. (AFP) Picasso Museum re-opens after long-delayed refit Paris A fter a five-year closure for what was supposed to be a two-year refurbishment, Paris’s Picasso Museum re-opened yesterday with arguments over the 52-million-euro ($66-million) project still reverberating. French President Francois Hollande said at a ceremony the museum was “one of the most beautiful in the world and one of the most moving because it brings together the considerable and prolific work of the best-known artist of the 20th century”. The ceremony, though, did little to hide the rancour surrounding the project, which featured the sacking of its director, a blast of criticism from the artist’s son, lengthy delays and a huge budget overrun. The museum -- housed in a 17th-century mansion in Paris’s trendy Marais quarter -- has been extensively modernised and enlarged to more than twice its previous size. But the project ran 22 million euros over budget due to an increase in the scope of the works, and a rift developed between Picasso’s son Claude and the French government. His Petro Poroshenko Bloc was forecast to emerge as the biggest party in the 450 seat legislature, although without an absolute majority, meaning he will have to form a coalition, probably with harder-line nationalists. The elections were called to cement the pro-Western course launched in a February street revolt that overthrew the corruption-tainted, Moscow-backed president Viktor Yanukovych. For the first time since the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Communist Party is not expected to enter parliament, symbolising what Poroshenko, elected president in May with 55 percent of the vote, hopes is an irreversible political shift. Polls show a majority of Ukrainians support economic and democratic reforms -- especially a crackdown on corruption -- leading eventually to European Union membership. However, the optimism and energy of the revolution have been sucked out by Russia’s seizure of the Crimea region and an uprising by proRussian rebels in the industrial Donbass region that has killed more than 3,700 people. With no military victory in sight, Ukrainians may face the same kind of frozen conflict severely weakening other ex-Soviet states, such as Georgia, that have tried to break free from Russia’s influence. Western governments blame Russia for the turmoil and have slapped painful economic sanctions on Moscow. However, President Vladimir Putin accuses the West of stirring up the conflict as part of a strategy to weaken Russia. In a combative speech on Friday, the Kremlin leader lashed out at the United States and said Ukraine was showing a “lack of goodwill” to end the conflict “by peaceful means”. The tugof-war over Ukraine, a country of about 45 million, has propelled nationalist parties to the fore in today’s vote, meaning that Poroshenko will be under pressure to deliver on anti-corruption promises and a solution to the armed conflict. Radical Party leader Oleg Lyashko, a populist whose group has been polling second with nearly 15 percent of the vote and could end up in a coalition with the Petro Poroshenko Bloc, says he won’t tolerate business as usual. UN climate talks shuffle to a close in Bonn Bonn oncern was high at a perceived lack of urgency as UN climate negotiations shuffled towards a close in Bonn with just 14 months left to finalise a new, global pact. The six-day meeting of senior officials in the former West German capital was meant to lay the groundwork for the annual round of ministerial-level UN talks in Lima in December. In turn, the Lima forum must pave the way to a historic pact which nations have agreed must be signed in Paris next year, to curb planet-altering climate change. But some negotiators and observers expressed concern that the Bonn talks focused too much on restating well-known country positions on how responsibility for climate action must be shared. “We will clearly have our work cut out for us in Lima,” said Ronald Jumeau, spokesman for the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) -the very countries at high risk from climate change-induced sea level rise. He “tried to escape by fighting with a soldier and attempting to steal his weapon” said the document seen by AFP, adding that Aung Naing was suspected of being a member of a local armed group. This was contradicted by activists and local media reports which said he was a freelance journalist covering unrest in the region, where fighting between government troops and rebels has flared in recent weeks. The US-based Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) said Aung Naing was thought to have worked for several local news titles but the MPC was unable to confirm his status as a reporter. 26 Sunday, October 26, 2014 URGENTLY REQUIRED Reputed saloon in Adliya is looking for FILIPINO BARBER presently in Bahrain. Playmaker Hamid Hamoodi led Iran to a deserving victory, setting up crucial efforts for Sahand Allah Verdian, Akbar Valaei and skipper Mohammadjavad Manavinezhad who scored most of the team points. Iran were also well represented by Hadi Seyediazi,Rasoul Aghchelli, Mohammad Javad Heidari and liberos Hadi Seyedniazi and Mohammad Daliri. Both China and Iran headed into the final high in confidence after clinching hard-fought 3-1 semi-final victories over South Korea and Bahrain, respectively. Iran’s players were in top form and showed team understanding and some remarkable skills to claim the title in less than 80 minutes. T China, coached by Genyin Ju,was heavily reliant on his most prominent players, Haxiang Du and Zhejia Zhang, with other team members being Runtao Xia, Yuanbo Li, Guanghui Yu, Zhaorui Wang, playmaker Yaochen Yu and libero Jiacheng Zhi. Meanwhile, hosts Bahrain had to settle for fourth place after losing their third place game play-off 0-3 (20-25, 1425, 22-25) to six-time Asian under-20 champions South Iran beat China 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-19) Korea earlier. It was an impressive finish for Bahrain, the dark horses of the tournament after narrowly being edged by title favourites Iran 3-1 in the semi-final on Friday. Despite ensuring a place in next year’s World Under-21 Championship in Mexico after their heroic quarter-final epic win over sixth seed Chinese Taipei, Bahrain’s coach Reda Ali started yesterday’s game with a full-strength squad. Mohammed Saleh Anan, who was unarguably one of the best rising players of the championship, was again in a good form against Korea. The 19-year-old spiker scored most of Bahrain points and also made several blocks to deny the Koreans, while being assisted by skipper Mahmood Abdulwahed, Yousef Ebrahim, Sayed Kadhim, Isa Ebrahim, playmaker Abdulrahman Al Mutawa and libero Mohammed Hasan. However, the Koreans were too strong for Bahrain, thanks to a well-organised teamwork, led by their dangerous pair Haxiang Du, Yaoche Yu and Yuanbo Li. Team Central Cafe Sunday, October 26, 2014 Barca beaten by Real Madrid on Suarez debut SPORTS 29 REAL MADRID VICTORY Madrid uis Suarez’s Barcelona debut ended in defeat as Real Madrid cut the gap on the La Liga leaders to just a point as they came from behind to win El Clasico 3-1 yesterday. Playing for the first time in a competitive game since being handed a fourth month ban for biting Giorgio Chiellini at the World Cup, Suarez’s Barca career had got off to a flying start as he set up Neymar to slide home the opening goal after L Real Madrid- 3 Barcelona- 1 just three minutes. However, Real responded like European champions as Cristiano Ronaldo levelled from the penalty spot before second-half goals from Pepe and Karim Benzema handed them a deserved ninth consecutive victory in all competitions. Barca boss Luis Enrique had sprung a few surprises with his starting lineup as not only did Suarez start, but Xavi and Jeremy Mathieu were also preferred to Ivan Rakitic and Jordi Alba. However, the Uruguayan proved his worth within three minutes as his cross-field pass was taken down by Neymar who skipped inside Dani Carvajal and Pepe before sliding the ball into the far corner for his 11th goal in as many games this season. The goal sparked Madrid into life as Benzema failed to find the target from a narrow angle as he was pressured by Claudio Bravo before the Frenchman crashed a header off the bar from Ronaldo’s cross. Both Messi and Neymar were booked for late challenges on Toni Kroos and Carvajal as the hosts upped the pressure in search of an equaliser. However, they were thankful to captain Iker Casillas midway through the half as he spread himself to stop Lionel Messi becoming the joint top goalscorer in La Liga history from a tempting cross from Suarez. Just when Barca had appeared to have taken the sting out of Madrid’s pressing, though, they gifted the hosts a route back into the game as Marcelo’s low cross was blatantly handled inside the area by Gerard Pique. Ronaldo stepped up and confidently buried the resulting spot-kick to become the first man to score against Barcelona in nine league games this season. The home side could even have gone in at half-time in front as James Rodriguez’s header drifted just wide from another Marcelo cross. (AFP) Cristiano Ronaldo scores a penalty goal. PSG make Bordeaux pay penalty Paris wo penalties by Lucas Moura and a clever chip by Ezequiel Lavezzi helped champions Paris Saint Germain beat Bordeaux 3-0 in Ligue 1 yesterday and put pressure on leaders Marseille. Resurgent Marseille have 25 points ahead of their game today at Lyon, where they can clinch a club record 10th straight league win. PSG are second with 21 having played a game more. Bordeaux coach Willy Sagnol had promised to take the game to the champions and his outfit went into the game level on points with the Parisians. But with Brazilian international centreback pair Thiago Silva and David Luiz holding firm, Paris always looked superior in that part of the pitch. With Edinson Cavani suspended and Zlatan Ibrahimovic injured, PSG coach Laurent Blanc started with a makeshift front three of Javier Pastore, Lucas and speedy youngster Jean-Christophe Bahebeck. Bordeaux had reason for early cheer on 27 minutes when Gregory van Der Wiel delivered a wild studs-up kick to Wahbi Khazri’s heel with the Ogier closes in on title in Spain Salou ebastien Ogier was on target to wrap up his second successive world title at the Rally of Spain after maintaining his lead over Volkswagen team-mate Jari-Matti Latvala yesterday. The Finn, the only driver who can prevent Ogier defending his crown, is lying 27.3 seconds adrift in second after yesterday’s six specials. Ogier turned up in Spain with a 27-point lead over Latvala in the championship standings. The Finn must finish above Ogier, taking at least two more points, to remain in the hunt at the Wales Rally GB next month. Ogier kept the wheels firmly on his title push by posting the quickest times in two of the day’s six specials, S T Paris Saint-Germain’s Brazilian defender David Luiz (left) vies with Bordeaux’s Italian Argentinian forward Emiliano Sala ball gone and the referee right behind him. He was sent off, but the numerical advantage would last a mere ten minutes. Andre Poko’s complete miss as he swung at a stray ball would have been comical if the Bordeaux midfielder hadn’t ended up connecting with Marco Verratti’s knee, and while he was unfortunate, he had to walk too. Sagnol was furious with the red card decision against Poko. With Bordeaux deflated PSG went on the offensive. From the ensuing free-kick Luiz was already turning to celebrate a goal but saw his thunderous shot come back off the post with the wall and ‘keeper well beaten. PSG then spurned a series of chances before Verratti was brought down in the area as the pressure mounted. With Ibrahimovic and Cavani absent penalty duty fell to Lucas, who stepped up in his pink boots and sent Stephane Carrasso the wrong way, his spotkick ripping into the opposite corner. (AFP) Sebastien Ogier with the other four claimed by Latvala. Another Finn, Mikko Hirvonen in a Ford Focus, was in third, 1:18.6 adrift. Kittel wins Criterium de Saitama Tokyo ermany’s Marcel Kittel won a sprint finish ahead of Slovakia’s Peter Sagan and Alexander Kristoff to claim the Criterium de Saitama yesterday. The 60km race around a 3km street circuit is held by Tour de France G organisers ASO, who last year took the bold leap into a new market with the first event outside France to carry the Tour’s prestigious name. The “Criterium de Saitama by La Tour de France”, to give it its full title, is a publicity event aimed at attract- ing Japanese investment to the Tour while boosting the profile of road cycling in the Asian country. Last year’s initial race was won by the 2013 Tour de France winner Chris Froome of Britain, in front of a crowd of 200,000 spectators. SPORTS Sunday, October 26, 2014 30 Marc Marquez grabs record 13th pole in Malaysian MotoGP MARQUEZ ON POLE Hend pulls ahead in Macau Macao efending champion Scott Hend battled to a four-under-par 67 in the third round of the Macau Open yesterday, racing two shots clear of Anirban Lahiri to put a second straight title within his sights. The Australian produced three birdies over his closing six holes at the Macau Golf and Country Club, while India’s Lahiri carded a solid bogeyfree 67 for second place at the $900,000 Asian Tour event. But long-hitting Hend -- who is chasing a seventh Asian Tour victory after winning the Hong Kong Open last week -- was not satisfied with his performance, pro- D nouncing it “flat”. “Hopefully I can come back tomorrow and feel a little more energy and concentrate better,” said the 41-year-old, who leads on 14-under-par 199. “I’m just feeling flat, extremely flat.” Hend started off in brilliant form, nailing four successive birdies from the second hole. But he lost concentration with three bogeys over a five-hole stretch mid-round, before streaking ahead again with birdies on 13, 15 and 18. Thailand’s Prom Meesawat took the day’s best round of 64 for third on the leaderboard. South Africa’s Ernie Els, the tournament’s star attraction, was lagging behind on 211, two-under-par. Mane lifts Saints into second place Marc Marquez of Spain (centre), teammate Dani Pedrosa of Spain (left) and Movistar Yamaha rider Jorge Lorenzo of Spain (right) pose after the qualifying session. Sepang ecently crowned world champion Marc Marquez will start in top position for today’s Malaysian MotoGP, surpassing the record for the most poles in a single season. The Spanish Repsol Honda rider clocked a record lap time of one minute 59.791 seconds in yesterday qualifying at Sepang, 0.182 seconds ahead of his team-mate and compatriot Dani Pedrosa. In third place was Spain’s Jorge Lorenzo, while his Yamaha teammate Valentino Rossi, who is battling him for the season’s runner-up title, qualified R in sixth. It was Marquez’s 13th pole of the year, breaking the previous record of 12 front-row starts in a season jointly held by Australians Mick Doohan and Casey Stoner. His flying lap toward the end of the session also broke his own record from qualifying last year of 2 minutes 0.011 seconds. He came second in last year’s race. Marquez said he was “definitely delighted” with his position after taking a tumble in the fourth practice session. “Yes, I’m definitely motivated. To achieve 13 poles is not easy, and I’m happy with the record. But the main race is yet to come, and I want to be focused for that,” the 21-year-old said. “Tomorrow won’t be easy because Dani was also very fast today, but I’m definitely looking to race in dry conditions. If it rains, then it’s a different story.” The 5.5-kilometre (3.4 mile) Sepang circuit is famed for its hot track temperatures and tropical afternoon downpours. But Saturday’s qualifying remained dry. Pedrosa, who topped all three practice sessions and has won the last two Malaysian Grand Prix, was the only other rider to finish below the two-minute mark, clocking 1 minute 59.973. The 29-year-old, who has yet to win a MotoGP championship title, said he was content with his second-place finish. Lorenzo clocked 2 minutes 0.203, while Germany’s Stefan Bradl and Italy’s Andrea Dovizioso qualified fourth and fifth respectively. (AFP) Marquez clocked a record lap time of one minute 59.791 seconds. Sanchez double downs Sunderland Sunderland lexis Sanchez scored twice as Arsenal beat Sunderland 2-0 at the Stadium of Light yesterday to ensure veteran manager Arsene Wenger avoided his worst start to a Premier League season. Chile forward Sanchez seized on two defensive errors to take his tally to eight goals in 15 appearances for the Gunners since his £30 million pre-season transfer from Barcelona. Victory was just Arsenal’s second Premier League win in their last eight games and third in nine overall this term as they took their points tally to 14, eight behind leaders Chelsea. Such was Arsenal’s dominance, they had no need to call on Theo Walcott. The England international made his return to the squad as an unused substitute after a nine-month ab- A Arsenal’s Chilean striker Alexis Sanchez (righty) vies with Sunderland’s English midfielder Lee Cattermole. sence following a serious knee injury suffered against Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup in January. Sunderland restored a degree of pride after last week’s 8-0 humiliation at Southampton. However, their lat- est defeat left them in danger of dropping into the bottom three if north-east rivals Newcastle avoid defeat at Spurs on Sunday. Arsenal had been in danger of posting their lowest points total in the opening nine games to a campaign under French boss Wenger had they failed to win on Wearside for the fourth consecutive season. But they rarely looked back once Sanchez put them ahead in the 30th minute. Former Sunderland loan striker Danny Welbeck had already fired narrowly over from the edge of the area after latching onto a Santi Cazorla pass, when Sanchez rewarded the visitors’ dominance with the opening goal as the half hour mark approached. It arrived courtesy of a mistake from veteran Sunderland defender Wes Brown, who badly mis-hit an attempted back-pass from near halfway. An alert Sanchez pounced on the loose ball to sprint 30 yards with Brown in fruitless pursuit, before chipping right-footed over exposed goalkeeper Vito Mannone to find the net from the edge of the area. (AFP) Southampton enegal winger Sadio Mane fired Southampton to a 1-0 win over Stoke that lifted his team into second place in the Premier League yesterday. Ronald Koeman’s side had romped to an 8-0 demolition of Sunderland in their previous fixture and while the performance against gritty Stoke at St Mary’s wasn’t so eye-catching, the reward was the same. Mane’s first-half strike proved the difference and, remarkably after such a turbulent close-season marked by the departure of manager Mauricio Pochettino and five key players, Southampton have made a better start than the 1983-84 season when they finished second in the English top-flight. As well as Mane’s cool fin- S ish, the key to Southampton’s success was their rock solid defence, which has conceded only five league goals this season and held out for another clean sheet against a Stoke side they will face again in the League Cup on Wednesday. Mane was the only change to the side that routed Sunderland and he made a lively start, with Graziano Pelle just unable to turn home his cross-shot at the far post. Southampton were pushing forward with pace and poise and Pelle directed his shot into the side-netting when Mane escaped down the right again. Saints midfielder Dusan Tadic would have capped another fine display with another goal but for a fine, low save by Asmir Begovic. The Scot and Ferrer are currently eighth and ninth in the race to London with four places still up for grabs following Rafael Nadal’s decision to withdraw to have his appendix removed on Friday. The 36-yearold right-hander smashed an unbeaten 103 as Pakistan reached 286-2 declared in their second innings in the first Test, a lead of 437 before Australia slumped to at 59-4 at close on the fourth day. Australia still need another 379 to win or bat throughout 90 overs today. He also became only the seventh Pakistan player to score twin hundreds in a Test and the first to do so against Australia. But it would not have happened at all had Younis decided not to play the Tests after being snubbed for the one-day series which Pakistan lost 3-0. Younis said his family and friends motivated him to play the Tests. (AFP) Dortmund slip further after fourth defeat Berlin orussia Dortmund’s horror run of Bundesliga results continued yesterday as they lost 1-0 at home to ten-man Hanover 96 to drop to 15th after a fourth straight defeat. Dortmund’s terrible Bundesliga form is in stark contrast to their Champions League campaign, where they top their group with three straight wins after Wednesday’s impressive 4-0 victory at Galatasaray. But seven days before they face Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich away, Dortmund are now winless in their last six league games and just a point above the relegation zone. Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp was left fuming on the sidelines at their Westfalenstadion as Japan’s Hiroshi Kiyotake curled in a free kick to score Hanover’s first goal for 416 minutes following three straight defeats. Shiffrin, Fenninger share World Cup victory Sölden S teenage ski star Mikaela Shiffrin and Austrian rival Anna Fenninger tied for victory in the first World Cup giant slalom of the season yesterday in Solden. They both finished with a combined time for the two legs of 2min 39.85sec after Shiffrin had led after the first leg by the slender margin of 0.09sec. It is not the first time that the resort has seen a tie for first place, in 2002 three skiers shared top spot in the shape of Slovenia’s Tina Maze, Norwegian Andrine Flemmen and Nicole Hosp of Austria. For 19-year-old Shiffrin, who has carried all before her in the slalom discipline, this was a first success in the giant U slalom after recording two podium finishes in the World Cup series last season. Shiffrin said it was a fulfillment of a dream for her although she wasn’t quite sure whether it counted as a victory. A second Austrian skier, Eva Maria Brem, was third with a time of 2:40.12. Shiffrin took full advantage of being first down the slope on the first leg for a time of 1:17.92, but Fenninger, the defending World Cup giant slalom champion, made up the difference by finishing fastest over the second. France’s world champion Tessa Worley, returning from injury, could only manage seventh, in 2:41.42, having been third, 0.42sec off the pace, after the first run. London iafra Sakho struck for a sixth successive Premier League game to secure West Ham’s shock 2-1 victory over Manchester City as the champions missed out on the chance to increase the pressure on leaders Chelsea yesterday. Senegal striker Sakho, signed during the close season for £4.5 million from Metz, headed West Ham’s crucial second goal in the 75th minute D after Morgan Amalfitano had given the home side a firsthalf lead at Upton Park. City were desperate to close the five-point gap on Chelsea, 24 hours before Jose Mourinho’s side face Manchester United at Old Trafford. But while David Silva halved the deficit in the 77th minute, Manuel Pellegrini’s men were unable to conjure an equaliser against a West Ham side who surprisingly cemented their position in the top four. City were also anxious to move on from yet another midweek Champions League disappointment following the 2-2 draw at CSKA Moscow. Pellegrini admitted his side paid the price for failing to close out that game after taking a two-goal half-time lead. With the future of their European campaign now in doubt, Pellegrini was looking for an immediate response as they resumed their defence of their Premier League title. The meetings between these two sides last season were an embarrassing mismatch with City winning each of the four meetings including the twolegged League Cup semi-final, running up an aggregate score of 14-1. But West Ham are a different proposition this season following the arrival of Enner Valencia, Sakho, Amalfitano Diafra Sakho celebrates scoring his team’s second goal. and Alex Song. City started brightly, with Sergio Aguero immediately punching a hole in the home defence with a powerful run from halfway before seeing a deflected shot scrambled away by Hammers keeper Adrian. Silva then sent a free-kick on to the roof of the net and Vincent Kompany headed over as the visitors threatened to overrun Sam Allardyce’s side. But for all the early pressure they exerted, City’s play lacked fluency and West Ham gained a foothold in the game when they were able to service Sakho and Valencia, who showed they had the ability to stretch the visiting backline.
