October 2014
Dear Gaither Families,
We have had a wonderful start to the new school year and
I would like to thank everyone for the hard work,
planning, and preparation to ensure a smooth opening.
Thank you to all the students, parents, staff members and
community members who have joined our Parent Teacher
Student Association (PTSA) and Booster organizations.
With all stakeholders working together to be partners in education, great things
will continue to happen at Gaither High School!
Published by Gaither High School, a Hillsborough County Public School, and Gaither PTSA
The School Advisory Council (SAC) reviews multiple sources of data about our
school to develop the School Improvement Plan goals and objectives. If you would
like to be involved with the SAC, please contact Mrs. Amber Minutillo, SAC
chair, at [email protected] or call 975-7340.
Our first Conference Night for the school year will be held on Thursday,
September 18th from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m. Progress Reports will be distributed
through homeroom on Tuesday, September 16th. At the conclusion of Conference
Night, a Senior Information meeting will be held for all seniors and parents in the
auditorium. Edsby parent access information is on our school website. Please refer
to this information for regular grade updates and academic progress.
On Wednesday, September 24, we will be hosting a presentation on PSAT tips and
strategies for parents in the media center at 6:00 p.m. and on October 8 at 6:00
p.m. in the media center, we will be conducting a presentation on the college
admissions process. These events are free of charge and open to all Gaither High
School parents.
The PSAT will be given to students on Wednesday, October 15, 2014. Since the
Florida/College Board Partnership began, Hillsborough County Public Schools
have been recognized as leaders in the state regarding the participation rate of
students taking the PSAT. It is extremely important all 9th, 10th and 11th grade
students test except those who would normally be exempted from taking a normreferenced test such as FCAT 2.0. Please ensure your student is at school on time
and eats free breakfast to prepare for this important assessment. Seniors will
participate in a special senior meeting during the testing period and are expected to
be in attendance the entire day.
Our College and Career counselor, Mrs. Theresa Nissen, is seeking speakers for
the Great American Teach-In which will be held on Thursday, November 20,
2014. Please contact her at 813-975-7340 extension 233 or via email at
[email protected].
Research shows that students who attend school every day and are on time
perform better academically. Your expectation and support of these life-long work
habits in your student are greatly appreciated.
Again, thank you for being our partners in education as we work
together to ensure our learners are college and career
ready. If there is anything you need, please feel free to
contact my office or any of our staff members.

Welcome to the Fall Gaither families!
We hope everyone had a great transition into the new school year and all
of our new students and families are beginning to experience the many
wonderful things that Gaither has to offer!
The Gaither PTSA is in full swing as we have already had many
opportunities for students and parents alike to get involved. We have put
the newsletter together, sold lockers, parking decals, spirit wear and
homecoming tickets, and by the way, we love our volunteers!
Additionally, our 2nd Annual Grandparents Breakfast was held on
September 15 and we really enjoyed meeting all of you. Grandparents serve such a vital role in the life
of a child and we are blessed to have so many that want to be involved. We had a great breakfast and
discussed the many opportunities to serve here at Gaither. The PTSA also supports our teachers by
providing a meal for them on conference nights so they can focus on their students and families, and we
always appreciate those of you who contribute to that effort. We assure you, the teachers truly appreciate
it!
th
Finally, we are off to a great start with our PTSA membership goals and are confident
that we will exceed those goals during this school year. Your support of the PTSA is
the only way we are able to provide the many programs and events for the
students and teachers and know that you want to be a part of that support,
as well. Membership forms are always in the main office and can be
turned in any time, along with your payment of $6/member. We are going
to have our first membership incentive coming up, so every student will
want to turn in their membership forms in order to participate. So, look for
those posters around school for details!! We are looking forward to
working with you and hope that you will take advantage of the many
opportunities to get involved here at Gaither. You won’t regret it!
Best Regards,
Stephanie Woychowski

PTSA Membership
Cowboy Express
Parents, Teachers and Students-
The Cowboy Express is an academic achievement
incentive program at Gaither High School
sponsored by the PTSA. It is divided into 2
categories: Blue and Silver.
We are well into the first quarter of school and have
had a great initial response to joining the Gaither
PTSA! Your financial support is crucial to providing
PTSA programs and events during the school year.
A Blue Cowboy Express Card allows a student to
attend home athletic games free of charge and
purchase dance and qualified event tickets at
discounted prices.
Students, we will be having our first membership
incentive/giveaway before homecoming, so make sure
you have joined so you can benefit from our first
opportunity to thank you for being a member. Be on
the lookout for the date and time of the incentive!! As
always, membership forms are located in the main
office and the cost is only $6/person. Remember, it’s
everyone’s responsibility to “make every child’s
potential a reality!”
A Silver Cowboy Express Card allows a student to
attend home athletic games free of charge and
allows free admittance to dances and qualified
events.
A student must have attended Gaither High School
the previous semester in order to apply. A Cowboy
Express Card is good for 1 semester only. Students
must submit an application each semester. The
application period is open one week in August/
September for Semester 1, and one week in
February/March for Semester 2. Applications are
available in the Main Office.

Guidance News
TIPS FOR SUCCESS
The Counselors have visited all freshman and
sophomore homerooms to share information
regarding the importance of earning good grades in
high school. Students were advised to complete
every assignment, on time, every day, and hand it in
to their teachers. They learned that Grade Point
Averages are updated at the end of each semester,
and appear on February and June report cards. They
know to visit the Guidance lobby and sign-in “the
book,” if they want to see their counselor. Their
counselor will send a pass for them in class within a
three-day period.
TESTING
The FCAT (Florida Comprehensive Assessment
Test) will be given the week of October 6th to 12th
and 11th graders who have not yet received a passing
score. Students must pass this test in order to receive
a diploma. A student will repeat only the portion of
the test that they have failed.
Freshman and
sophomore students will be tested in April 2015.
The PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary SAT and
National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) is a
scholastic assessment test given once a year in
October. All college bound juniors, sophomores, and
freshmen should take the PSAT. By taking the
PSAT/NMSQT, a student can:
~practice for the SAT I
~enter scholarship competitions (Juniors only)
~tell colleges to send you information about
programs, activities, and financial aid
~find out if you have the reading and math skills
you'll need to succeed in college
The PSAT will be administered at Gaither on
Wednesday, October 15th, at approximately 8:00
a.m. All 9th, 10th, and 11th graders will take the
test free of charge!
GRADE QUESTIONS
After viewing Edsby, if parents have a question about
a grade, teacher’s names appear on your son or
daughter’s schedule. To contact a teacher, email
addresses are configuered as follows:
[email protected]
(note the dot between first and last names)
Please note that teachers do not have access to phones
in their classrooms, so using email will result in a
faster response!
GRADE POINT AVERAGES (GPAS)
Students (and their parents) may see their GPA by
accessing Guidmii at www.guidmii.com. Your user
name and password is the same as the one used for
Edsby.
The SAT Reasoning Test is a verbal, math, and
writing test administered by the College Board. It
should be taken by college bound juniors and seniors.
A good score on this test is important because it is a
major factor in college admission. Students may
also register on-line at www.collegeboard.org.
Students must put Gaither's high school code
101738 and their social security number on the form
when registering. The SAT is offered 7 times a year
at various locations. “Taking the SAT," is a booklet
which contains test taking tips and practice SAT tests.
It is available in the Guidance Office.
THE GREAT AMERICAN TEACH-IN
The Great American Teach-In will be held
Thursday, November 20th at Gaither High School.
Speakers will be making presentations to classes
regarding their careers and hobbies. If you are
interested in speaking to classes, please contact Terri
Nissen by phone at 813-975-7340 ext. 233 or by
email at [email protected] by Monday,
November 18th.
The ACT is a college placement test battery that
includes English, math, reading, and science
reasoning, with an optional writing exam. It should
be taken during the junior or senior year in high
school. The ACT registration booklet and the
practice test may be picked up in the Guidance Office

TRANSCRIPTS
Seniors need to send transcripts to colleges and
universities as part of their application process. They
complete a “Transcript Request Form” in the
Guidance Lobby and give it to our Registrar, Miss
Levis (her name will soon be changing to Mrs.
Caponero). Transcripts are sent to most public
institutions electronically for free. For private or out
-of-state schools there is a $2.00 fee per transcript to
cover mailing costs.
ACT and SAT test scores do not appear on the
transcript, and need to be ordered separately from
www.act.org and www.collegeboard.com.
TEACHING RESPONSIBILITY
When your student has an issue at school, (i.e.
requests for schedule changes, difficulties
understanding assignments, questions about applying
for college) it is suggested that parents encourage
them to handle it themselves. Even though parents
would like to solve all of their teenagers concerns for
them, learning to navigate the proper channels is a
necessary life-long skill. Students have been told to
use the Guidance Office “book” to sign-up to see
their School Counselor.

Coast University and members of the Florida Orchestra.
Our first Concert is fast approaching and our students have been practicing hard and preparing some beautiful
music for your enjoyment. Please come support the Orchestra, Guitar and

Cheerleaders Make a Difference
in the Local Community
Over the summer our Gaither Cheerleaders have been striving to make a difference in the local area. During
the month of July some of our girls volunteered at the Community Food Pantry located in Carrollwood Village
at Village Presbyterian Church. The Community Food Pantry originally opened its doors in 2008 and near
serves 350 working poor families each month. It is run fully by
volunteers and relies heavily on donations from the community,
schools, youth sport food drives, local businesses and Feeding
America Tampa Bay. The volunteers at the pantry assist and allow
the families, based on the number in their household, to shop like
they are at Publix and get to choose items their families will enjoy.
“We are pleased to have the support of our local community and
schools to help serve those in need of food. Thank you again to the
2014 – 2015 Gaither High School cheerleaders for their service
this summer,” said Monica Adkins Wilson, Community Food Pantry Director. While the experience for the families is very rewarding, the cheerleaders were able to make new friends with other volunteers and helped strengthen their relationship with their other teammates. “It means the world to me that I get to help out people in my community who
don’t have the same opportunities and blessings as others. Knowing that I helped put a meal in someone’s belly puts a smile on my face. I also have an even bigger smile knowing that my Gaither teammates and I were
together, side by side, helping the community one person at a time,” says Rachael Campbell, Freshman Cheerleader.
While some girls were working hard in the Community Food
Pantry, others were diligently working with younger cheerleaders who are a part of the Northside Dolphins Tampa Bay Youth
Football League (TBYFL). The TBYFL gives children ages 4 –
14 a chance to gain competitive athletic skills, learn the importance of teamwork, as well as individual commitment and the
value of good sportsmanship and leadership. Our cheerleaders
have dedicated their time out at the Northdale Soccer Field
where the Dolphins practice three days during the week, where
they show the younger girls’ new stunts, techniques, cheers or
anything else that could help them excel at their games and their
future competitions. “Being able to help others just gives me great joy. Overtime volunteering becomes a passion, and this is a feeling I want my girls to have. I want to help them show others that cheerleaders are more
than symbols of spirt, they can also be great leaders and major contributors to the community. Having our
Gaither girls help out the Dolphins gives them a chance
to not only become a mentor but a huge role model for
these young girls and show them what they can aspire to
later become,” said Jacalyn Muir, Gaither High School
Head Cheerleading Coach. While the summer may be
over, the Gaither Cheerleaders will continue to make a
difference in the community and hope to show off their
hard work soon.
