Dear Gaither Parents.
Spring is near! The new FSA (Florida Standards
Assessment) writing assessment begins March 2 through
March 6 and the ELA (English Language Assessment)
begins April 13 through 21. All students will be taking these
new, important exams and have been preparing for them in
their English classes. Our Saturday tutoring sessions will
continue through April 11, 9AM - 11AM. These two-hour sessions are held in the
media center and students receive additional instruction with Gaither teachers in a
small setting. There is no cost and students do not have to sign up in advance. Please
take advantage of these sessions.
Other important assessments are upcoming, such as FCAT retakes and Algebra 1
EOCs (End of Course Exams, March 23-30), Biology EOCs (April 21-24), Algebra 2
EOCs (April 27-30), and Geometry (May 4-8). Advanced Placement Exams for
students taking AP will begin the first week of May.
On February 10 (report card distribution day), we held our second principal's honor
roll ice cream social for students receiving straight A's during quarter 2. I am very
proud of these students for meeting high academic standards and would like to thank
our PTSA for volunteering during this great event.
Kudos go out to Sarah Kleiner, our Gaither Stampede Coordinator and teacher at
GHS, as well as our student clubs and organizations, Teresa Trumbach, Senate
Sponsor, our business partners, and the many volunteers which made this year's
Stampede one of the best ever! A special "thank you" to Greg Eckley OIC, officer incharge, and the Rough Riders for coming out in their uniforms to give beads and teddy
bears to students and to Bob Conigliaro, Caspar's McDonalds, for providing food and
refreshments, as well as Leo Haggerty and Willard Brim and the Knights of Columbus
Council. Our students and their buddies benefited the most with their determination
and camaraderie they showed through their competitive spirit!
Finally, we expect 100% of our students to graduate with a high school diploma. Last
year, our graduation rate was 76.98%. Although a lofty goal, I have high expectations
for our students and feel that there is no reason for a student not to graduate from high
school. Students should be checking Edsby frequently to monitor their progress, as
well as know their GPA, credits, assessments passed and needed, and other pertinent
information to stay on track to graduate. As a father with a senior who is preparing to
graduate from high school and enter college, I know this is a very exciting time for
many of you who also have a senior ready to do the same. It is important for parents to
know the academic status of their child in all grade levels and I encourage you to
contact your child's guidance counselor to check their progress.

Dear Parents, Students and Teachers,
Spring Break is almost here and then it is full speed ahead to the conclusion
of the school year. We had a few major events here at Gaither High School
over the last month and hope you all were able to be a part of it!
At the PTSA’s general meeting held in February, members for the
Nominating Committee were elected as follows: Robyn Feenaughty, Suzy
O’Neal and Tricia McManus. The Nominating Committee is currently
seeking people interested in an officer position on the 2015-2016 PTSA
Executive Board. In order to be nominated a person must be a member of
the PTSA. For more information, or if you are interested in a position, please contact the Nominating

Gaither High School hosted the annual Gaither Stampede Special Olympics event on February 13th and the
PTSA wants to give a special “thank you” to all the volunteers who helped to make this event so successful.
These students work hard to prepare for this day and were so excited to participate. An event like this could
not take place without the many volunteers that played a part, so THANK YOU again to everyone that helped.
The PTSA’s biggest fundraiser of the school year, the 2015 Gaither Star Revue Talent Show, took place on
February 27th under the direction of Star Revue Coordinator Suzy O’Neal. This year’s production - put
together by the students, for the students – was a huge success and showcased so many of our talented students
here at Gaither. Thank you to everyone that participated in the show, both onstage and behind the scenes.
We will continue on with preparations for Senior Achievement Awards in April. This program is truly special
because our kids have worked so hard for the past four years and this is the proof. Then, we look forward to
the last PTSA general meeting with the volunteer breakfast and recognition. We will finish the year as
expected with graduation and the much anticipated “Splash Bash.” This is a unique program that the Gaither
PTSA has carried for many years and we are glad to continue the tradition. And, these students look forward to
this huge party all year long. There are few schools that offer a senior celebration that can match the exclusive
Adventure Island bash that happens at the end of their Gaither experience.
There are many more opportunities for parent and student involvement this year. If you would like to get
involved and help out in any way please send us an email at [email protected].
As always, if you are not a PTSA member yet, we encourage you to pick up a form in the Main Office and turn
it in. Your $6 membership goes a long way to help us do the things we
want to do for our students and teachers! Students will definitely want to be
sure they are PTSA members in order to enjoy free frozen yogurt at our
next PTSA Appreciation Day on Friday, March 27th during all lunches!

AP TESTING SCHEDULE
Nine AP exams will be given at Idlewild Baptist Church at the NorthEast corner of Dale Mabry & Van Dyke

SAT PREP CLASSES
The final free SAT prep classes will be held at Gaither on May 2nd –
May 23 on Saturdays 9:00 am to 1:00 pm for any students signed up to
take the June SAT. Applications and schedules are available in
Guidance. Free SAT Online Prep by College Board is now available!

CONGRATULATIONS are in order to Gaither's outstanding soloists and ensembles who sang at the recent
District Assessment! Requirements are:

Best Buddies
The goal of the Best Buddies Program is to establish a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities
for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment and leadership development for people with intellectual and
developmental disabilities (IDD). Best Buddies is where friendships are formed between our Special Education students and their regular Ed Peers at our school. Gaither has over 130 Peers and 54 Buddies!!!
This year, our major fundraiser for Best Buddies is the Friendship Walk. In order to continue pursuing inclusion and friendship for those with intellectual and developmental disabilities, it is crucial that we raise money
to keep the Best Buddies organization going. We invite you to join Gaither’s Friendship Walk Team on Saturday, April 18th at Gadsen Park (6901 S. MacDill Avenue, Tampa FL 33611) as we support this worthy cause.

Gaither Stampede - 2015
Every year in the month of “love” Gaither hosts our Annual Stampede not only for our Special Olympians but
for other athletes throughout our District.
The opportunity to begin hosting the Stampede began in the
1995-96 school year, under Mr. Adum, Gaither’s Principal at the
time. The event has grown to hosting approximately 350 athletes and about 650 Gaither students, teachers, coaches and
PTSA parents. This year we were honored to have the Rough
Riders and the Knights of Columbus helping us out. In addition,
many of our student service and interest clubs set-up entertainment and activity booths to keep the athletes busy and even
dancing, while waiting for their events to begin. Caspers Company donated the burgers and apples and our clubs provided the
water and chips. One of our Moms baked a ton of delicious cookies and brownies all of which disappeared
pretty quickly!
In true Gaither style, it was a team event, combining our Senators and PTSA Student Ambassadors working diligently to create
a safe, organized event in which our athletes get the opportunity
to participate in a “trial run” for their track and field events in
anticipation of the USF State qualifying games. “Showcase” and
our Fuego Latino dancers were part of our opening ceremonies.
The day goes by quickly and is filled with smiles, cheers, food
and entertainment—not to mention the chance for our Gaither
students to be a “buddy” to an athlete—which is such a rewarding experience for everyone involved.

Gaither’s Senior Splash Bash 2015
Tuesday, June 2nd
7:30 pm until 12:30 am
Splash Bash 2015 tickets will be on sale this month during all lunches March 3rd – 5th and March 17th-19th for
seniors and guests. Splash Bash Permission Forms are available in the Main Office and can also be found in
this Newsletter for your convenience. Tickets cost $50 and include admission to Adventure Island, food,
drinks and entertainment for the evening. Gaither’s Senior Splash Bash is a unique and one of a kind alcoholfree and drug-free Graduation Celebration that we are proud to bring to our seniors and their guests! This year
seniors and their guests will be among the first to experience Adventure Island’s newest attraction, the Colossal Curl! So don’t delay and be sure to get your tickets now!
Cowboy Closet
Cowboy Closet is for Gaither students experiencing
a need due to homelessness, house fire, family unemployment, or other family emergency.
To Donate: Visit the Cowboy Clothing Wish
Rack in the Guidance Department and take a tag off
the hook. The tag will indicate sizes of clothing
and/or any other items (shoes, school supplies, personal items, etc.)
Clothing donated should be new or gently used
(clean, no stains), conform to school dress code,
and be of the current style. Bring the item(s) to the
Gaither High School Guidance Department during
regular school hours. Charitable donation receipts
will be issued for the amount of new items only
(please present receipt when bringing in the item).

RULES

In order to provide a safe non-alcoholic, drug-free graduation celebration, the Gaither PTSA requires each attendee to
abide by the following rules:

Photo IDs are required of all seniors and guests at Adventure Island check-in.

Gaither graduating seniors may bring two guests. Guests must be between the ages of 16 and 21 as of June 2,
2015. Admission tickets are not transferrable.

All seniors and guests must have permission and release forms completed and signed by a parent or legal guardian
in order to purchase a ticket.

Admission to Adventure Island is between 7:30 pm and 8:30 pm, Tuesday, June 2, 2015. NO ONE WILL BE ADMITTED AFTER 8:30 PM.

Departure from Adventure Island will begin at 11:30 pm and conclude at 12:30 am. No one will be permitted to leave
the park prior to 11:30 pm without a parent being notified and permission given from that parent.

Appropriate bathing suit attire is required. No thongs or t-backs allowed.

All attendees will follow the rules established by the Gaither PTSA and volunteers, and Adventure Island personnel
and security.

Any disruptive behavior or inappropriate behavior will result in parents being notified and possible removal from Adventure Island premises.

Gaither PTSA and/or GHS Administrators may deny entrance to Adventure Island due to academic or conduct issues or non-compliance of any of the above rules.

No refunds.

LIABILITY RELEASE

I have read and agree with the rules for Splash Bash 2015 and understand and encourage my
son/daughter to abide by these rules. I believe the Gaither High School’s PTSA and their representatives will do all in their power to assure the safety and well-being of my son/daughter. But realizing the age of my son/daughter, and further recognizing the scope of the area and activities
characteristic of Adventure Island, I do hereby release the Gaither High School PTSA, Gaither
High School, and all of their representatives of any claims of negligence, injury, or indemnity occurring during this event. I grant my full permission for my son/daughter to attend this event and understand this is a full evening event and my son/daughter will not be allowed to leave the theme
park until 11:30 pm on Tuesday, June 2, 2015.
I understand the Gaither PTSA will attempt to notify me in the event my son/daughter wants to
leave early or is not complying with school or Adventure Island regulations. I further acknowledge
that Gaither High School PTSA and their representatives are no longer responsible for my son/
daughter once they depart from Adventure Island.
EMERGENCY TREATMENT PROCEDURES
In the event of an injury to my son/daughter, I understand every attempt will be made to notify me
of the injury and realize the information below is crucial to that notification. However, if notification
is not successful at the phone number(s) listed below, I grant my full permission to the Gaither
High School PTSA, Gaither High School administration/staff, their representatives and/or Adventure Island security personnel to make decisions for the emergency care of my son/daughter with
transport by ambulance to Florida Hospital Tampa at my expense if necessary.
The following phone number(s) will be my EXACT LOCATION on Tuesday, June 2 nd from 7:30 pm
until 12:30 am. I have provided at least one emergency number that is NOT a cell phone number
or pager. I understand the PTSA cannot be held responsible for disconnected or out-of-service

Admission to Adventure Island is between 7:30 pm and 8:30 pm, Tuesday, June 2, 2015. NO ONE WILL BE ADMITTED AFTER 8:30 PM.

Departure from Adventure Island will begin at 11:30 pm and conclude at 12:30 am. No one will be permitted to leave
the park prior to 11:30 pm without a parent being notified and permission given from that parent.

Appropriate bathing suit attire is required. No thongs or t-backs allowed.

All attendees will follow the rules established by the Gaither PTSA and volunteers, and Adventure Island personnel
and security.

Any disruptive behavior or inappropriate behavior will result in parents being notified and possible removal from Adventure Island premises.

Gaither PTSA and/or GHS Administrators may deny entrance to Adventure Island due to academic or conduct issues or non-compliance of any of the above rules.

son/daughter to abide by these rules. I believe the Gaither High School’s PTSA and their representatives will do all in their power to assure the safety and well-being of my son/daughter. But realizing the age of my son/daughter, and further recognizing the scope of the area and activities
characteristic of Adventure Island, I do hereby release the Gaither High School PTSA, Gaither
High School, and all of their representatives of any claims of negligence, injury, or indemnity occurring during this event. I grant my full permission for my son/daughter to attend this event and understand this is a full evening event and my son/daughter will not be allowed to leave the theme
park until 11:30 pm on Tuesday, June 2, 2015.
I understand the Gaither PTSA will attempt to notify me in the event my son/daughter wants to
leave early or is not complying with school or Adventure Island regulations. I further acknowledge
that Gaither High School PTSA and their representatives are no longer responsible for my son/
daughter once they depart from Adventure Island.
EMERGENCY TREATMENT PROCEDURES
In the event of an injury to my son/daughter, I understand every attempt will be made to notify me
of the injury and realize the information below is crucial to that notification. However, if notification
is not successful at the phone number(s) listed below, I grant my full permission to the Gaither
High School PTSA, Gaither High School administration/staff, their representatives and/or Adventure Island security personnel to make decisions for the emergency care of my son/daughter with
transport by ambulance to Florida Hospital Tampa at my expense if necessary.

Volunteers
February was a very busy month with lots of events and activities going on at Gaither. During February volunteers helped out with Special Olympics, serving ice cream at the 2nd Quarter Principal’s Honor Roll Ice Cream
Social, monitoring the halls during the SAT for juniors, taking part in the Life Fast Forward Financial Literacy
Program for seniors, and working the Star Revue Talent Show.

PTSA Presents
Life Fast Forward Program For Seniors
On Wednesday, February 25th our PTSA partnered with Suncoast Credit Union to sponsor Life Fast Forward, a Financial
Literacy program, for approximately 70 of our seniors. After
being given a profile that detailed such information as their job,
marital status, number of children, and monthly income, students visited 13 different stations to spend money and live life
as an adult. Students were able to purchase transportation, lodging and other life necessities and the object was to get the students to go broke in order to learn just how expensive it is to be
an adult. This was a truly fun, educational and interactive reality
fair game that made a positive impact on our high school seniors
as they learned the importance of budgeting and the cost of being an adult.
As an added bonus, at the conclusion of the program Suncoast
Credit Union held a drawing and five students each won a Chick
Fil A gift card! Congratulations to the lucky seniors: Anthony
Outlaw, Meera Patel, Corey Hobson, Karla Quiros, and Alicen
Torres.
Gaither PTSA is very grateful to have a wonderful community partner like Suncoast Credit Union for sponsoring the Life Fast Forward Program. Thank you to Chris Townsend, Suncoast Credit Union Youth Outreach
Manager, and your team of Suncoast employees that worked this event for our students. And, last but not least,

Our goal is 100% membership – Students, Parents and Faculty!
Being a member of the PTSA allows you to gain a national voice in the future of our
children. The National PTA is a group of over 6 million parents and teachers joined
together forming a powerful advocacy group on behalf of the children across this nation. By joining the PTSA you are not obligating yourself to take an active role, but you
are helping to support PTSA's goals and objectives. Your membership dollars
and donations help fund the programs at Gaither.
Our PTSA sponsors many programs each year that benefit all students. Some of these are: Star Revue Talent Show, Cowboy
Express Academic Incentive Program, Senior Achievement Awards, Student & Faculty Dodgeball Tournament, Splash Bash
(an alcohol-free grad party at Adventure Island), and Senior Scholarships. ***Seniors must join PTSA by December 31st in
order to be eligible for PTA and/or PTSA scholarships.***
The cost for membership is $6 each for students, parents, grandparents, and teachers. Donations are also greatly appreciated.
Please note that $3.50 from every membership is sent to the State/National PTA, so only a portion of your dues supports our

Gaither’s all night, safe, alcohol-free, supervised graduation party held at Adventure Island. An average of 500 students attend every year.
Splash Bash Volunteer: Assist the committee by doing any or all of the following: sell tickets in May; ver ify per mission for ms;
gather and/or solicit prizes and food donations; chaperone the night of the event. Parents of students in all grades traditionally participate
because senior parents are very busy on graduation night.
Annual Student/Faculty Dodgeball Tournament: Assist with the planning and set up of this fun event held each spr ing that unites
students, parents and faculty.
Great American Teach In: An event held in the fall that gives par ents the r ewar ding oppor tunity to shar e their car eer s with the
students.
Locker and Parking Decal Sales: Assist by selling locker s and/or par king decals to students dur ing lunch hour s in August./
September. Also, assist with once a week sales of parking decals for the duration of the school year.
Copy Help: Assist staff and faculty by copying class wor k and other school documents one to thr ee hour s one day per week.
Senior Achievement Banquet: Assist with planning, decor ating and/or ser ving at this annual event to honor our outstanding
seniors. Over 500 people attend each year and parents of students in all grades are needed.
Reflections: Assist chair per son by encour aging par ticipation, pr epar ing entr ies for competition and honor ing par ticipants and
winners of this arts program sponsored by the National PTA.
Awards Committee: Assist chair per son in wr iting and submitting awar d applications for the annual PTA/PTSA awar ds pr ogr am.
Scholarship Committee: Assist with pr omoting the PTSA scholar ship pr ogr am and ser ving on the selection committee.
Partners in Education: Liaison with ar ea businesses to benefit Gaither High School students.
Spirit Nights Committee: Help or ganize and pr omote monthly “Spirit Nights” at area restaurants.
Dad’s Club: Let’s face it. Dad’s make a difference! Please consider being a part of this special group of volunteers.
General: Assist as needed; willing to be contacted on an “as needed” basis for any volunteer needs that arise.
