One of Broadway’s most memorable characters, Charity is the eponymous heroine of this 1966, Tony-Award winning musical which features songs like Rhythm of Life, If My Friends Could See Now and the classic, Big Spender, sung by the dance hall hostesses and popularised by Shirley Bassey, who famously sang it to Prince Philip at his 80th birthday party. With a script by Neil (The Odd Couple, Barefoot In The Park) and music from Cy Coleman and Dorothy Fields, Bob Fosse crafted a musical from a movie by Italian director Federico Fellini. When it opened in London in October 1967, the Daily Sketch said “Everybody, but everybody had a whale of a time… a sweet, sexy fairy tale – nice and dirty, witty and pretty, with enough energy to pop the corks of every bottle of non-fizz in the West End - and funny, very funny, too”.
