Page 3 Twenty– ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 19, 2014 Pastor’ Desk Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,, Although our parish spearheaded major fundraising for the victims of Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) in the Philippines last year, as you can well imagine, there is still much repair and recovery ongoing. To that end, our Filipino Apostolate has scheduled an afternoon charity benefit concert in our church on Sunday, November 16th by the well-respected Accordion Pops Orchestra. This is the largest professional accordion orchestra of its kind on the East Coast. It consists entirely of accordions plus percussion instruments. Its conductor, Al Terzo, has performed at the Garden State Arts Center and Newark’s Symphony Hall. Having heard some of their recordings, I can assure you that this will be a treat for those who love music, from classics to contemporary, big band to Broadway, jazz to religious. More information will follow shortly. For now, please reserve the date! Msgr. Richard Arnhols, Pastor Reflection on Today’s Readings The story of Jesus and the Roman coin is sometimes used to argue that Christians should not worry about how their religious duties and their political duties might conflict; one can repay to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s without any worry that this might take away from the things that we ought to give to God. But matters are not really that simple because the division between the secular and the sacred is often a blurry one. The coin that was given to Jesus would likely have had an inscription on it—divi filius—that ascribed divinity to Caesar himself. This is why Jesus did not have one on his person: to carry such a coin would have been to be complicit in idolatry; it would have implied that he accepted not just Caesar’s political authority but also his claim to be a divine being. In other words, as part and parcel of his political authority, Caesar claimed a status and an allegiance from his subjects that rightly belonged to God alone. So while Jesus commands us to give to political rulers what is their due, the whole context of the story implies that political leaders might expect more from us than they rightfully should, demanding an absolute loyalty that rightly belongs only to God. The first reading shows us that God can use political rulers, even an unbeliever like the Persian king Cyrus, to fulfill the divine will in the world. But we ought not to presume that such rulers always fulfill God’s will, or that the loyalty that they ask of us is something that we automatically give. We are to be discerning about the possible conflicts between our political loyalties and our ultimate loyalty, which is to God. “God of the nations, give us a due respect for earthly rulers, but an even greater respect for the law you have planted in our hearts and revealed most fully in your Son, Jesus. Amen.” Stewardship: Sharing our Time, Talent, and Treasure! “Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s and to God the things that are God’s.” - Matthew 22: 21 Everything we are and everything we have belongs to God. We aren’t “owners” of anything, we are merely “stewards” of the gifts God has given each of us. All God is asking is that we give back a portion of what He gave us. This is the essence of Stewardship. God should be our first priority in everything. All else comes second. Our Sunday Offering: Sunday, Sept. 21, 2014—$17,450.78 Sept. 22, 2013—$16,201.05 Thank you!
