Peace, Love & Chapelwood
Dear Parents,
Peace, Love and Chapelwood is what is represented on our children’s chapel shirts this
year. We are off to a great start here at Chapelwood. All the children look so cute in their chapel
shirts each Wednesday. Thank you for remembering to send them to school dressed for chapel.
We are all looking forward to the many events our PTO helps us coordinate for the children. All of the committees have been working hard over the summer to begin their planning. This
year the events are going to be awesome. I encourage each of you to get involved; you will enjoy
getting to know some of the nicest people!
Thank you again for sending your precious children to us. We take this responsibility
very seriously and will continue to enrich your children’s lives with educational experiences that
they will always remember.

Parents,
The school year is off to another strong start and most everyone is settling into the routine of school. Often times that is a big step for our little friends, so thank you for working through the adjustment of starting school. Please keep in mind a few things when
dropping off and picking up. Cell phones should not be used in the parking lots or on the
streets around Chapelwood. Additionally, please refrain from talking on your cell phone
on campus. While this is not a “rule”, it is more a request of courtesy to others around
you.
PTO Meeting 9:00am in
Thank you to all the “new” parents that participated in our Volunteer Training classes. We had a record number of parents, grandparents, caregivers, and even an aunt
that were trained to help volunteer at school. If you have previously taken the training,
please stop by the office and complete an update for the new school year.
Refreshments to follow
Finally, please make plans to attend our upcoming Open House that will take place on
Tuesday, September 30th. The teachers will be in the classrooms starting at 6pm. Come
with your family for an informal evening at school. You can also visit the Book Fair that
evening as well.

Columbus Day
I am so excited to see all the HAPPY FACES now. As predicted, it took just about
four weeks for our little ones to adjust to coming to school and gain a sense of security with their new teachers. It is always an exciting time for me as well as the
teachers to watch them develop bonds and enjoy the new experiences that school
offers them each day.
Looking ahead, Lifetouch photography will be here to take individual pictures
the week of October 7th. Please look at the schedule in this newsletter for the day
your child’s class is scheduled to go.
Also, as the weather starts to change, it is a good idea to send a light jacket or
sweater in your child’s bag each day. You never know when they might need it.

Nurses Notes with Abi Von Feldt RN
I am so excited about starting my first school year here at Chapelwood. My goal is to keep your
children safe, healthy and HAPPY!
Here are just a few fun facts about Nurse Abi Von Feldt. I went to Texas A&M University for my undergraduate then I went to The University of Texas Health Science Center for my Bachelors in Nursing.
I used to work at The Womans Hospital of Texas as a Labor and Delivery Nurse. I am married and
we have a nine month old who gets to come to Chapelwood. I am looking forward to the new school year as
your school nurse!
A few reminders… Anytime your child has any type of medication, ointment, or cream that needs to be
given during the school day, please come by my office first to sign a consent form.
Feel free to stop by the clinic if you have any questions or concerns or call me at (713)354-4469.

Raising Responsible Children in
An Era of Indulgence and Entitlement
The modern day child is under a great deal more stress and pressure than their
parents faced. The modern day parent also is faced with a greater set of challenges than
were faced by their parents. With time at a minimum and expectation at a maximum,
parents need to understand not only what to do, but why those strategies work to be
proactive in addressing their child’s developing set of needs.
Brian T. Goonan, Ph.D. has been working with children and families for over 20
years and has monitored the changing demands on and challenges to the family. This
presentation outlines the critical points in a plan to reach today’s child and forms the basis for the four week course that teaches parents how to get the most out of the precious
moments with their children.
There is no cost to attend this class.
Please register by emailing
Amy Hinnant at [email protected].
Childcare is provided for the class. Email [email protected] to reserve a spot.

Gardening News with Mrs. Seele
The 3 1/2’s, Pre-K, & Bridge are all actively involved
in our garden. We started the year harvesting sweet
potatoes. Several of the classes cooked and tasted
them.
Our next project is to start a worm bin. After a few
months, we hope to have worm castings to fertilize
our plants. We will be feeding the worms and
observing them in their habitat.
We will be planting lettuce and other herbs in our
garden.
We welcome visitors to our garden anytime, just remember to look and not pick.

Music Notes with Mrs. Grigsby
Music speaks to us. It evokes memories and feelings. It can help us learn, and it can
comfort us. These things are just as true for children as they are for adults. Children are
drawn to music naturally, especially to familiar sounds and tunes. In music class, we sing,
dance and play instruments, not only to learn about music, but also to allow children to speak.
Even those without words can express themselves through music. Some take to it right
away. Others are slower to join in. Either way, watching your children enjoy music is a
beautiful thing!
Spanish with Senora Menn
We are off to a great start in Spanish class. We have been reviewing and learning our colors, shapes, and
songs. Soon we will begin focusing on “family” words.
The bridge students begun learning basic phrases of conversation to be able to communicate in Spanish.
It is exciting to see them try to communicate with their friends using a second language.

Science and Health News
Nutrition is a complex and evolving science, and research
reveals new information all the time. Why, then, should we try
to teach such complicated information to young children? We
should do it because children learn best when they are part of
the process! Good nutrition is essential for proper growth and
development, and the basics of eating for health don’t
change. Children are surprisingly interested in learning about
food, and they can learn to make wise choices. Throughout
the year, we will be learning about all of the food groups and
why each is important. We will learn about the “extra group”
and how to include treats in a healthy way.
We will play, read, build, spin, stretch, look, touch and taste.
We will try new foods and hopefully find new favorites. We will even create a rainbow! As a Registered Dietitian, I believe that the earlier children learn to eat healthy and stay active, the healthier they will be all
their lives. I’m glad to be a part of this journey with your children!
Kathryn Grigsby, MS, RD, LD
Sensory Motor Class Goals
Our motor program will provide an environment full of possibilities and basic principles of
physical development. The activities will build a foundation for gross motor and fine motor
development. Proficient skills are not the goal of the program.
The major goals are:
1. Increased body awareness (how the body moves and identification of body parts.)
2. Increased awareness of self in relation to space, objects and others.
3. Increased balance (stationary and mobile) and flexibility.
4. Awareness of cooperative behavior and controlled patterned movement (rhythms).
5. Increased control of small objects through manipulation.
Our activities are active learning processes that help develop self-confidence and a positive self-image. Sensory motor experiences like touching, talking, crawling, running, jumping, and playing wire the brain for learning and growth. These activities will have a lifelong impact on a child’s development and cognitive success.
We do have FUN! Drop by the “Motor Room” sometime and see how we learn!
