Korea yesterday suffered a
shock defeat to China in the
17th Asian Men’s Under-20
Volleyball Championship in Bahrain.
In the much-awaiting third day clash,
the Chinese and their head coach Genyin Yu produced one of the biggest
upsets in the competition by scoring an
easy 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-16) win to
extend their lead in Group ‘C’ with two
wins in as many matches.
South Korea, who won their maiden
match against Zealand in straight sets,
were handed their first defeat in the
tournament, but are still with a chance
of punching the second ticket from this
four-team group.
Five more matches took place yesterday, as Ratmt Wadidie inspired Qatar to
defeat Yazgeldi Hojayev-coached Turkmenistan, led by Didar Nuryyev, 3-0
(25-12, 31-29, 25-10) for their first win
in two matches.
The Qataris thus revived their chances
in the competition. Turkmenistan are out
of contention, having suffered their third
loss in a row.
India’s skyscraper combination registered their second successive win in the
Group ‘D’, defeating Hong Kong 3-0
(25-13, 25-13, 25-22) at Isa Sports City
hall in Riffa.
The Indians, who kicked-started their

Bahrain will also be praying
for Kuwait to lose to Saudi
Arabia. But if Saudi Arabia
wins, Bahrain and Qatar will
play a final match tomorrow.
However, if Bahrain beat Qatar, and Kuwait beat Saudi Arabia, then all three teams will be
on nine points each.
In that scenario, the points
difference will prove decisive.
The winners and runners-up
will automatically qualify for
the Asian Cup to be held in China next year.
Bahrain will lose the chance
to finish runners-up and to
qualify to the Asian Cup if they
lose to Qatar and Kuwait manages to beat Saudi.
Then Qatar will claim the title and Kuwait will be the runners-up.
Bahrain can also claim the title without depending on other
results if they beat Qatar by a
margin of 18 points.
