Alexander Ong When NYAWC was first founded in 1982, a small group of volunteers secretly worked out of supporters’ offices and in their homes. Since hiring its first full-time staff in 1987, NYAWC has grown to a staff of more than 40. The New York Asian Women’s Center is unique among domestic violence programs, as it remains the only organization serving multiple Asian immigrant communities in New York City and is the only licensed Asian women’s shelter program in New York State.
