December is one of my favorite months of the year because the nostalgia of my childhood seems to hover, reminding me of the vivid days when I awaited the arrival of Santa Claus. Call me immature, but I love the complete fantastic journey of the season, from stuffing the stockings with trinkets to writing Saint Nicholas’ note (along with leaving carrots and cookies). It becomes an exercise in the magic of creativity. I dislike the commercialism of Christmas and the excessiveness that comes with the season, but truth be told I am willing to overlook that for the love of the decorating, cooking, wrapping gifts, adorning the tree and spending time with my family. I even enjoy watching the campy videos of Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer and Charlie Brown's Christmas. Dec-04 - 2009 | 6 Comments | More -> October is appreciation of New York architecture past and present It seems that a particular type of architecture that one prefers is often linked to where they lived as a child. For much of my youth, I lived in a former sea captain's Federal style home set on a hill overlooking Port Jefferson Harbor. It was a little home and in need of some refurbishing, but filled with many proper details such as fireplaces in many of the rooms and the original paneled library. Prior to that home, for several years we lived in the tiny hamlet of Mt. Sinai, Long Island on a piece of property with three homes. Our home was originally the barn on the property that had been converted to a home by a Stony Brook professor and his wife. It was a unique space for my mother to create our nest, and with the open kitchen plan and exposed beams it had a relaxed, modern feeling similar to homes today. I have fond memories of living there and when I hear of people converting barns to homes, my interest is always piqued. Both of these childhood homes taught me a respect for... click photo to get to story FINANCIAL TIMES EDITORIALOCTOBER 2009 THE STATE OF THE MOUNT EDITH WHARTON'S ESTATE Oct-04 - 2009 | 4 Comments | More -> September is a look into how animals influence our interior design I have heard that genetic traits or personality types skip a generation in families, and I have found this to be very true in mine. I grew up with a mother who had a special understanding of animals. Don't get me wrong, I like animals too and how could I have avoided it when my mother would often pull off the highway to help a stray dog or cat, sometimes bring them home and nuture them back to health, and later secure them a safe home to live in. I must admit with a bit of guilt, that although I loved my horse and animals growing up, I was a tad more concerned about keeping a lint brush nearby to assure my clothing stay hair free-after all, I am a Virgo. However, this family trait of loving animals has stuck to me like glue and permeated itself into the genetic makeup of my lineage because now I live with two children who have the same passion for animals. My daughter has been obsessed with horses from a very small age, and even before she could say the word "horse" she would point... I hope this editorial will encourage you to become interested in a special genre of collectibles, while giving you some tools on how to best shop in the marketplace. I recommend starting at a local antique show such as the one shown below in East Hampton this past July. It was a quiet part of the day (I attended at the end of the day, just before closing) and I was able to stop by each vendor's tent, ask questions and inspect the goods. This is the best way to learn about a particular type of antique that you want to start collecting. I just returned from a trip to San Diego, California and the lasting impressions still linger of a city that has the luxury of living year round with that casual summer expression stamped in its makeup. California is a lovely state, with varied topography and climates, but the San Diego area is particularly beautiful because of its authentic casual vibe. Each little town along the Pacific Coast Highway leading north out of San Diego is more unique than the next. I am pleased to bring back some of the California cool to my summer entertaining in my home in Eastern Long Island. When I got married on the island of Martha’s Vineyard in 1992, like most brides I was focused on all the aesthetics leading up to my big day. We held our reception at a naturally beautiful, but austere space, the East Chop Beach Club, that overlooked Vineyard Sound. I had a great caterer on the island named Betsy Schiller, and she suggested using a collage of white milk... Shows If you’re antique hunting, buying well-designed furniture, looking for that special treasure, or shopping for a unique gift, you will find the best selection in an online store or at an antique show. In the summertime and early autumn, there are many antique shows going on all over the United States and Canada. It is great fun to spend a day or afternoon with friends browsing through the booths at an antique show. There is always something for everyone. To me, it does not matter how much money or resources goes into the design of a home, but if the little accoutrements that should pull it all together fall flat, the whole experience is lost. To take this idea a bit further, I really hope that these accessories have come to rest on our sofas, in our cabinets, on our walls, and on our tables, slowly over time rather than in one splash of a single shopping spree. Let me indulge in a little decorating philosophy for a moment, and state that our home is often our safe haven where we live the life of who we truly are, or better yet, who we aspire to be-the us on a sunny, spring day. Jun-01 - 2009 | 5 Comments | More -> May is digging in the dirt - gardening Yesterday I planted a small vegetable garden. As I sit with my coffee in the quiet of the early morning and look out the window at my work, I contemplate the experience. I must admit there is something very soothing about turning the soil over in your bare hands, letting the cool earth run through your fingers. I am usually not the gardener of the family, and although I enjoy picking and cooking the vegetables, until recently I have not had the urge to plant. There was a fleeting moment where my vanity threatened to spoil the mood, but I pushed the idea of dirt-stained nails away–nothing a good scrubbing cannot fix. The smell was clean and fresh. The whole morning was luxuriously calm, no rushing, driving or texting, just digging, planting, watering, patting in a repetitive manner-it became a wonderfully, melodic experience. The antique dealers plan for the shows months in advance and rent booths for displaying their offerings. They work very hard buying just the right things for the show always keeping in mind how much they can squeeze into their vans. It is a great event for them because of the anticipation of displaying and selling their treasures, and the excitement of the festival atmosphere every show provides. This has been interesting and challenging at times. Many of us have busy schedules, juggling varied facets of our lives simultaneously. Some of us simply cannot make the time to fine-tune our space, and some cannot figure out how to maximize the space we live in. We may lack the finances, or we may simply not feel secure about how to make it our own. They appreciate repeat customers and the benefits of customer loyalty. The best approach for getting a good price rather than making an offer is to ask the dealer, “What is your best price?” A dealer will invariably give you the lowest price he can accept. In my experience, you will get the most advantageous prices by buying first thing in the morning, by buying more than one object from a dealer, or by buying late in the afternoon. First thing in the morning is a good time, because the dealers usually purchase from each other before the show, making dealers keenly aware of dealer prices and anxious for their first sales. Buying a few things in one purchase is less work for everyone, which can bring the prices down. Late in the afternoon is advantageous to buy because dealers want return home with a lighter load, but of course the selection may be more limited. Buen Provecho, Lucia Matthews 2008 LEARNING FROM GRAMMA HOW TO MAKE UKRAINIAN DUMPLINGS (PIEROGI) FOR CHRISTMAS DINNER WHY I ENJOY MAKING MY GRAMMA'S PIEROGI RECIPE BY GABBY STEPHENSON I love to cook, and not just baking cookies, but putting together an entire meal. I know it is one way that I can help my family, besides I enjoy the whole creative process. Because I have a busy schedule as a freshman in high school, a performing dancer and a competitive horseback rider, I usually only cook on holidays, summers and weekends. When I was little I loved to help my mom bake, and it became our special time together to “create” in the kitchen. As I got older, I became fascinated with cooking shows and regularly watch Iron Chef and all my favorite chefs on television. I even collect television. I even collect cookbooks. Two summers ago, I decided to take some cooking classes and with two friends and our mothers we took a series of classes at a cooking school in East Hampton, Long Island called Loaves and Fishes. We learned how to make an entire Vietnamese dinner one night and homemade pasta dinner on another night. However, the most valuable recipe I have learned to date is how to make my Ukrainian grandmother’s family recipe of Pierogi (stuffed with potato and sauerkraut). After making the dumpling dough from scratch, we let it rise a bit, and roll it out on a floured board into thin sheets. We fill each dumpling (we usually make the filling the night before). We pinch the dumplings in a special way to give them an unusual shape. It is not a light meal, and is also time consuming so we usually only eat it once a year – Christmas dinner with a roast and vegetables. I am the only person in my family (beside my grandmother) that knows how to make the dough, and create these pretty little dumplings. I know it really makes my grandmother happy makes my grandmother happy that I have learned how to make this traditional Ukrainian dish because she knows that I can pass it onto my children and keep the tradition alive in our family.
