The Star A Catholic School committed to the Lasallian Vision of Education Celebrating 60 Years TERM 4 WEEK 1 – 17 OCTOBER 2014 – 1954 – 2014 ISSUE 32 / 14 Dear St Michael’s Community YEAR 12 In welcoming everyone back to school for Term 4, we particularly keep the Year 12 students in our thoughts and prayers. While it is an exciting time as they draw near the end of their schooling years, it is also a period when they need the support of us all. The next few weeks leading into exams and final assessments are particularly demanding and require a commitment from students, staff and parents. There are a number of opportunities to stop and reflect however, including this week’s Leadership and Awards Assembly and next Thursday’s Graduation Mass. These are key points in time in acknowledging the Class of 2014 and celebrating St Michael’s College as a Catholic school in the Lasallian tradition. DE LA SALLE DAY As you are aware, St Michael’s College celebrated De La Salle Day on the last Friday of Term 3. Throughout the year this is one of the few opportunities we have to bring staff and students from both campuses together, and as such it is a unique community experience. The format of the day falls very much in line with our Lasallian heritage, in that it follows the spirit of Faith, Service and Community. Staff and students from each campus met in the Founders Hall for a celebratory Liturgy, which was followed by a 60 th Year celebration video, a presentation from our Australian Refugee Association Ambassadors and performances from a range of students. The ‘Festival of Youth’ took place after recess and included a variety of food stalls, staff and student games, music performances and a chance for primary and secondary students to mix together. All monies raised go to our Mission Action Day funds. A highlight for me was seeing the Reception students sitting with the Year 12s at the Liturgy in a wonderful display of Lasallian “big brother/sister and little brother”. Our special guests for the day were former Principal Br John Pill and founding Brother Peter Gilfedder. Amen SYNOD ON THE FAMILIES We are Church one family in God Synod on the Families is scheduled to take place from 5-19 October at which Bishops and married couples will explore the hopes and needs of the family in the contest of complex world. “The life of a family is filled with beautiful moments: rest, meals together, walks in the park or countryside, visits to grandparents or to a sick person … but if LOVE is missing, JOY is missing, nothing is fun. Jesus always gives us that Love. He is its endless source.”- Pope Francis, to pilgrim families in Saint Peter’s Square on 26 October 2013. Love begins from our family, when our families pray together, they will stay together. Only when we learn to love one another from our family, we will be able to share this love for our neighbours in our society. The family is the first and most natural environment within which love can be given and received. We gain in the family the security and mutual respect within us and with the people around us. This circle can give us the confidence and trust in God, how much we are unconditionally accepted, treasured and loved. It is also very important to look beyond our own boundaries to feel that we are Church, one Family in God. When we love we begin to grow more like Jesus and we help others to grow along with us in the family, school and in the society. PRAYER TO THE HOLY FAMILY FOR THE SYNOD Jesus, Mary and Joseph, in you we contemplate the splendor of true love, to you we turn with trust. Holy Family of Nazareth, grant that our families too may be places of communion and prayer, authentic schools of the Gospel and small domestic Churches. Holy Family of Nazareth, may families never again experience violence, rejection and division: may all who have been hurt or scandalized find ready comfort and healing. Holy Family of Nazareth, may the Synod of Bishops make us, once more, mindful of the sacredness and inviolability of the family, and its beauty in God’s plan. S T M IC H A E L’ S C O L LE G E D IA M O ND JU B ILE E 1954 – 2014 WE REMEMBER … The Secondary Campus, in February of 1997, resembled a war zone rather than one in which learning took place. Trenches and bore holes pock-marked the normally ordered and manicured environment while bustling activity involving building crews, engineers and an array of construction personnel went about their daily work with intensity. Functionally, the College was 10 classrooms short, with subjects being conducted wherever there was space. Fortunately, the dislocation for staff and students was only short term. Two weeks after the beginning of the term, one wing of the new classroom block became useable, which relieved the crush on space and despite the heat, allowed for the more orthodox conduct of classes in rooms. It was testimony to the professionalism of staff and the co-operation from students that the dislocations were accepted and that teaching and learning continued unabated. On Monday, June 22, 1997, a dream of the College was realised. The Year 8 cohort in its entirety joined the Secondary Campus, fulfilling a vision that has been part of successive Principals for over three decades. Of course, this move had an impact on the Primary Campus, but by all reports, this impact was positive. The Primary Campus began its focus on the education of boys at a primary level, ensuring the curriculum for primary students was relevant and meaningful. Under the direction of the Primary Assistant, Miss Barbara Durkin, the National Statements and Profiles were implemented and Studie s of Society & Environment was introduced. In March of this busy year, the College also undertook a new and challenging venture called “AIM 97” – Art in the Information Millennium Exhibition. Carolyn Murakami, Art Teacher, was the instigator of this event which saw professional artists throughout Australia display a variety of diverse and quality works. The Glenelg Town Hall was the venue for this event and the SHIOUT Youth Theatre Company presented its production of ‘Thief’ which delivered a potent statement about the hopes and desires of youth. AIM 97 created a strong community spirit within the College, with staff, parents, friends and students contributing and it showed the wider community that the College was a school that is looking beyond the years. By year’s end, St Michael’s College was a College confident in its direction, a confidence that was founded by the increasing number of families who sought to enrol their children at the College; the transition of Year 8 cohort to the Henley Campus; the esta blishment of new structures at Henley to carry student development and pastoral care to new heights; the continuing development of Information Technology facilities; the growth in school-to-work programmes and connections with TAFE; procedures to monitor student academic progress; the investment of greater time in student leadership development; the close attention to staff induction and professional development; the introduction of a committee system to improve the efficiency of the College Board’s operation; the beginnings of a new organisation to replace the Parents & Friends Association; and initial moves to establish an Old Scholars Association. A busy year! CAMP GALLIPOLI ~ ATTENTION YEAR 5, YEAR 8, YEAR 9 AND YEAR 10 STUDENTS Current Year 5 and Year 8 - 10 students have been invited to be a part of a fantastic experience titled 'Camp Gallipoli'. Please refer to the following website for further details: www.campgallipoli.com.au Camp Gallipoli is an overnight school camp that will be educational, informative and respectfully entertaining. It will consist of documentaries, live concerts, a special ceremony involving the Waler Horse Society and the Anzac Flame, and the following morning the RSL will be holding a Dawn Service. All of these aspects will be exposing students to a unique commemoration that has not been experienced in Australia before. Positions are limited for this amazing experience so interested Year 5 and Year 8 - 10 students are encouraged to return the relevant forms as soon as possible. Forms are available from either Campus Administration Office. The camp will take place on Friday 24 April 2015 at the Morphettville Racecourse as students sleep rough in remembrance of those “FIRST ANZACS” and conclude on 25 April 2015. The cost for this amazing experience is only $99.00. PRIMARY CAMP US PLAYGROUND Students who wish to access the playground equipment after school must be supervised by parents. Students who do not have a supervising parent present will be asked to move off the playground. Teachers are on duty at the exit points of the school and are therefore not in a position to supervise children on the playground. To prevent unnecessary injuries we ask all students and p arents to please adhere to this safety directive. UNIFORMS Parents please note Term 4 sees the transition to the summer uniform which includes the College hat. Students R – 7 are able to wear their SMC PE Uniform to school on designated PE days this term. Ms Louise Kometer, Director - Teaching and Learning SCHOOL FETE ~ LE JUNK (RECYCLED SCULPTURE) EXHIBITION The photo collage contains a selection of images from the Le Junk (recycled sculpture) Exhibition and Lino prints from Year 6 Semester 1. Along the ceilings were Year 3 digital drawings of the rhinoceros fund raiser "Wild Rhino". $54 was raised for the Wild Rhino conservation program at Taronga zoo with the plush toy raffle and interactive "paint a rhino" activity (also see in the collage). A number of the boys sold their artworks with the proceeds earned by the students and the fete. The youngest art collector was Bennett Townsend from RBA who purchased the R2D2 sculpture by Oscar Mitchell 6EL. A private art collector purchased a number of artworks including Sam Kelly's "Ramcycle". Congratulations to the boys for exhibiting their artworks for the community to appreciate. Many thanks as well to the students and staff that helped me to set up and pack up the Pop Up Art Gallery space. Vicki Hynes COLLEGE SPORT AND EXTRA CURRICULAR PHOTOGRAPHS College sport and co-curricular photographs are now available for viewing and purchasing in two ways: 1. At the Secondary Campus, the Sports Photos are displayed on the Sports Notice Board, the Music Photos in the Music Suite and other photos on the window of Mr Hoffman’s office at the end of the staff room. Students can collect order forms from the Administration Office. These should be completed and returned to the Office where they will be forwarded to Academy Photographic, for the completion of order. Photos will be posted home via the address on the order envelope. 2. Photos can also be viewed and purchased ‘online’. This can be done by going to the site, www.academyphoto.com.au click on the Online Order tab which will request the shoot key, which is FRCUFH3B then select and order your photographs by following the instructions. Mr Wayne Hoffman, Director of Administrative Systems DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY Last term we were approached by Anthony Louzikiotis (Class of 2010), who is in his fourth year of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Adelaide, to produce a prototype of the wind turbine blades his team had designed. Anthony had recently heard we had invested in a 3D Printer and made contact with the Design & Technology faculty through Mr Foley. He was able to email us a digital file of their turbine design which was then transferred to the Makerbot 3D Printer. A prototype was produced, from which the university students made design changes and then a final version was printed at maximum resolution. The print quality was excellent and Anthony was extremely pleased with the end result. To have students who are doing a Mechanical Engineering Degree use our Design & Technology facilities to complete a major fourth year project, is evidence that investing in new technologies is beneficial for both current and past students. Mr Mark Stephens, Design & Technology Teacher NAPLAN RESULTS 2014 Recently we received this year’s NAPLAN results for our Year 3, 5 7 and 9 students. Our analysis of the outcome confirms the sound teaching practice that is being delivered across the board at St Michael’s. It is pleasing to note the continuing improvement of the students over the years, culminating in outstanding results at Year 9, with St Michael’s College students outperforming South Australia and Australia across all components in literacy and numeracy. I would like to remind parents that the NAPLAN results are just one of several diagnostic methods we utilise when considering the learning program for your sons and daughters. Those students who have been identified as underperforming in any of the tests will be followed up by the Learning Support Coordinators. All NAPLAN reports have been forwarded home and if you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the Coordinators at the relevant campus. This is a competition organised annually by the Sports Association for Adelaide Schools (SAAS) organisation. Our squad comprised a number of elite athletes, including William McCann (11GA) who recently finished 16th in the 12km City 2 Bay event with an outstanding time of 39.52. Sprinters Jack Loades (12DE) and Jack Panuccio (9SE) captained the team and demonstrated fantastic leadership both on the day and the weeks leading up to the event. St Michael’s were once again in the B grade this year and therefore competing against Concordia College, Prince Alfred College, Sacred Heart College, St Ignatius College, St Paul’s College and Westminster College. We finished in 4th place closely behind Prince Alfred, Westminster and Sacred Heart. This is an improvement from last year in which the College finished 5th. A handful of year 7’s were involved in the day to fill some u/13 events. It is exciting to see the talent and enthusiasm that will be at the Senior Campus in 2015! Whilst the deadline for applications is 30 November we encourage students to apply early. If courses become competitive in the application process, preference is given, in the first instance, to students who applied before it was deemed competitive. Whilst you can add delete and change preference order through to January if you have met the first date of 30 November, there is an advantage at TAFE to have your preferences relatively accurate and complete at all times. The course would have a focus on working in a Real Estate Office, but in reality would develop a range of skills from Help Desk Support, PC Technical Support and basic digital literacy to improve employability in any field. There needs to be a minimum of 6 students to run the course here at St Michaels. The cost to families would be approximately $800.
