GROWING THROUGH GRACE; LEARNING THROUGH LOVE
From the Headmaster
Another bumper week at All Saints
got off to a superb start with our
annual fashion show ‘Threads’ which
attracted a capacity crowd in the
HPE centre on Monday night. It was a
fabulous affair with models from Year
9 through to Year 12 parading their
creations with extraordinary grace, poise
and insouciance to an appreciative
audience. The music was delightful and
the atmosphere exuberant. It was lovely
to see young women of all shapes and
sizes and from all over the world proudly
and confidently putting their creativity
on display and our grateful thanks go to
Mrs Jill Shehab and Mrs Skye Daniels
for their unstinting support and advice
offered cheerfully and willingly and
often long after the final school bell had
sounded. They would hold me to account
if I did not also mention their team of
helpers, both leading up to the show and
on the night, who are such an important
part of the evening’s success.
On Tuesday evening we opened our
monthly Parents and Friends meeting
to interested guests and were frankly
delighted with the turn out. Those
visiting were able to see how the
meeting was run, hear some of the
reports and discussions, witness
the sense of fun and solidarity that
characterises such meetings and,
perhaps most importantly, see how
quickly we manage to get through the
agenda. We are always on the lookout
for parents who might be interested
in joining this august group, so if that
parent is you, make sure you get your
nomination in before our AGM on
Monday 10 November. Mrs Di Case will
be able to help if you need a nomination
form.
On Wednesday we held an assembly
for Middle and Senior schools out at
the wetlands to announce the Pegasus
winners and the School Captains for
2015. Congratulations to all who took
part in our annual creative writing
competition and particular thanks to Mrs
Julie Deane who once again undertook
the gargantuan task of reading every
entry and somehow coming up with
the winners in each category. It is a
labour of love to be sure, but a labour
nonetheless. With Year 6 away on camp
this week we will be announcing the
winners in next week’s Saints Alive.
Meanwhile I am delighted to report that
our School Vice Captains for 2015 will
be Joseph Allocca and Phoebe Nind,
and our School Captains will be Tim
Delahunty and Isabella Mortimore.
They will do a superb job. We had a
particularly strong field this year and
whilst I know those who missed out
will be disappointed, I am grateful that
their leadership skills will be a constant
presence in the School next year and will
help us to have a year to remember.
The talented Mr Thewlis gave a beautiful
address at the Year 11 Eucharist which
was yet another splendid occasion
rounded off in style with a closing
address from Mr Wright. Then on
Thursday night the Hospitality staff and
students once again did us proud by
serving a superb three course dinner for
the Connections Club. Heavens Above
has a well-deserved reputation as, to
quote a fellow diner ‘the best restaurant
on the Gold Coast’ and the work that Mr
Greg Fraser and Ms Deb Prentice inspire
their students to create is the stuff of
legend.
So a busy and entirely delightful week
played against a background of beautiful
sunshine. Who could ask for more?

Panel Day
Next Monday 20 October is Secondary
Panel Day in the Senior School. This is the
day when Secondary staff from around
Queensland meet with colleagues in the
region to moderate student assessment.
The All Saints Senior School classes will not
operate on this day. Similarly, State primary
schools will also be closed on Monday as
staff undertake professional development
activities. All Saints Junior and Middle
Schools will operate as normal on Monday.
Please note however, that all school bus
services may not operate on this day. If your
child travels to School via bus we suggest
that you check with your bus company
provider.
A B Paterson Public Speaking
Competition
Four of our Year 5 students, Imogen
Gustafson, Sahara McCarthy, Sasha
Zarew and Ryley McEnlly, competed in the
A B Paterson Public Speaking Competition
this week. Our students presented excellent
speeches with Imogen, Sahara and
Sasha moving to the next round. Rather
controversially, while the adjudicator
admitted that Sahara presented the
best speech in her heat, she didn’t put
her through on a technicality! Sahara,
however, shouldn’t be too upset as she
is experiencing significant success in
other areas having recently completed a
photo shoot as the Junior Australian and
International face of Speedo.
Parent Survey
The results of the School Parent survey
that all of our parents received last term
have been a major topic of discussion at
our recent School Executive meetings.
The feedback from this survey was
overwhelmingly positive with a respondent
rate of around 42% (most surveys receive
around a 20% response rate). There were,
however, a number of suggestions that
were made by parents about how each of
the sub-schools could improve. We do take
parent feedback very seriously and the
Junior School staff will be looking at these
suggestions carefully to see where we can
make changes that will improve outcomes
for your children.
Saints Alive
Parent Tip Sheet
This week’s parent tip sheet is a double
sided one. On one side of the sheet Attention
Seeking is discussed and on the other side
children’s Bedtime Habits. Attention seeking
is the most common type of misbehaviour in
children and it takes many forms including
eating problems, clowning around, constant
question asking and persistent interruptions,
showing off and whining. Attention seeking
children want to keep their parents busy or
at least keep their parents in their service!
Bedtime can be a battle in many families too
as some children will resist all attempts to
end their day and allow their weary parents
to have some time to themselves. If you
think that you could benefit from some tips
on either of these two topics, please feel
free to collect the tip sheet from the display
rack in the Junior School Office.

PARENT INFORMATION MORNING
YEAR 7 2015
All Year 6 Parents should have received
an email invitation to the Parent
Information Morning to be held next
Wednesday 22 October from 9.0011.00am. The morning will involve a ‘Q
& A’ session followed by morning tea,
and will be a wonderful opportunity for
you to find out as much as you’d like
about what to expect from our Middle
School and meet a number of fellow
parents – current and new.
We certainly realise that, for many
working parents, this time/date is
simply not feasible; however, given
that we are, for the first time, running
a concurrent session for the parents
of all 75 new students, we thought it
worthwhile to at least try to open up
the session to include the parents of
returning students. The intention is
to provide an additional forum that
will answer any burning questions
that parents may have in anticipation
of the transition to a new year level
(and school). Many current All Saints
families, especially those with older
children, already have an intimate
understanding of how our Middle
School might differ from the Junior
School; regardless, we will still be
hosting a Parent Information Evening
at the start of next year for all Year 7
parents, so if you are unable to attend
next Wednesday’s session, all is not
lost.

Round 3 Thursday 23 October
All Saints v Somerset
• Boys games are at Somerset
• Girls games are at All Saints
• AFL is at Carrara.
Team photos will be taken at after School
training on Tuesday 28 October from 3:00–
4:00pm. Students will need to wear the All
Saints Sport Uniform on that afternoon.
Achievements in sport
• Josh Grange competed in Part 2 of the
Under 12 Queensland State Surfing
Titles on the Sunshine Coast and won his
section. He is the Under 12 Queensland
Champion for the 2nd year in a row!
• Flynn Sweeney competed in the
Queensland State titles for BMX at
Sleeman Sports complex in Brisbane. He
completed 4 motos (heats), achieving
2nd in all of them and 2nd in the semifinal. In the final he powered home to
a 5th placing. We are very proud of our
focussed and determined BMX racer.
• Broc Feeney competed in the Queensland
Titles for Go Karts and took out the
Number 1 Plate. Qualifying 8th, he
managed to overtake all competitors
in front of him and finished 4 seconds
in front of 2nd place. He has also been
invited to race in Italy for the International
Rok Cup held at Lake Giardia to start his
international debut in Go Karts. Fingers
crossed, as there are 105 to qualify with
only 44 to make the grid. Best wishes
Broc.
• Taylor Timpani competed at the PBC
Spring Carnival last term and won the
100m Freestyle in record time. She also
came 1st in the 200m, 400m and 800m
Open Freestyle events. Congratulations,
Taylor.
• Sakura Sugiyama finished 6th in
Queensland at the Queensland

FROM THE HEAD OF MIDDLE SCHOOL
CELEBRATION EVENINGS
(Continued)
Last week’s Saints Alive provided a
breakdown of the process by which
Academic Prizes will be determined for
upcoming Celebration Evenings. This week
I’d like to explain the criteria for some of
the other prizes to be awarded on those
evenings.
The important thing to note from the outset
is that while the School obviously wishes to
celebrate academic excellence with all the
pomp and ceremony it can muster, there are
other attributes a student might have that
are of equal importance to the All Saint’s
community. Thus, alongside Academic
Awards, each year level’s Celebration
Evening will celebrate the following:
Endeavour Awards: “to exemplary students
who have consistently demonstrated
diligence of the highest order across all
aspects of their curricular and co-curricular
programme at the School.”
Citizenship Award: “to exemplary students
who have consistently demonstrated
genuine respect for the rights of others,
made valued contributions to their class
group, and established positive relationships
with students and staff. Class Leaders
(Years 7 and 8) and Middle School Leaders
are typically ineligible for this award.”
Finally, the School very much encourages
students to give back to the community in
terms of volunteer work. Throughout the
year, students are able to attain Saints
Outreach Service certificates based on the
number of hours they commit – Bronze
(10 hours), Silver (20 hours), Gold (30
hours), Service Badge (60 hours). Those
students who receive a Service Badge then
become eligible to be considered for The
Case Cup, awarded to “the student who has
demonstrated outstanding commitment to a
range of community service initiatives”.
CLASS ALLOCATIONS: 2015
Many thanks to all those parents who
submitted class allocation requests for 2015
by the deadline (Monday 13 October). Our
staff will now begin the exhaustive process
of collating all the necessary information
from across the community to best place
each and every child in their Core class for
2015. A reminder that this placement will
be made available to families in the week
preceding the commencement of the new
school year.
TEACHER ALLOCATIONS: 2015
We are currently finalising a number of staff
appointments for next year and, once this
process has been completed, we will be able
to publicise the final staffing placements
for 2015. Some parents have expressed
their disappointment that this information
wasn’t made available before the closing
date for class allocation requests, but
please remember that parental requests for
specific student-teacher or student-student
combinations will only be considered once
all the other factors outlined previously
have been accommodated. We very much
appreciate the trust parents place in our
judgment and assure you that we will do our
best to find the best ‘fit’ for your child.
THREADS 2014
On Monday 13 October the School’s Home
Economics Department staged their
annual student fashion show, Threads.
Congratulations to Anna Rhee and
Daisy Fielding for winning the ‘Spotlight
Encouragement Award’, but kudos to every
Year 9 student involved for doing such a
brilliant job of firstly, designing and creating
their beautiful summer dresses, and
secondly, gracing the stage with such poise
and confidence.
Here is some feedback about the night:
“Everyone looked so gorgeous on stage.
It took courage to get up but it was
an experience that I will never forget.”
(Sommer Redding)
“It was like entering a world of glamorous
fashion. I enjoyed parading down the
catwalk, watching and supporting everyone.
Being a model is of course every girl’s
dream!” (Han Cao)
Saints Alive
Middle School
“Threads was an amazing experience that I
will cherish forever as I was able to see other
designers and be able to experience it with
great friends.” (Maddi Hall)
Many thanks to Mrs Skye Daniel, Mrs Jill
Shehab, Mrs Melinda Pascoe, Mrs Jane
Campbell and Mrs Marianne Fox for putting
together such a wonderfully entertaining and
rewarding spectacle.
DATE CLAIMER: MUSICAL SHOWCASE
On the evening of next Wednesday 22
October, the School stages one of the ‘Blue
Riband’ events in its calendar – the annual
Music Showcase. I’ve no doubt the caliber
of musicianship and entertainment on
display will once again be awe inspiring and I
heartily encourage every family to get in and
organise tickets! (For details see Mr Mason’s
section later in this publication).
MIDDLE SCHOOL CELEBRATION
EVENINGS: TERM 4
In the Middle School, each year level gets to
celebrate their very own Celebration Evening
whereby we recognise outstanding student
contributions in the areas of Academic
performance, Community Service and
Citizenship. Please mark the following date
claimers in your diaries:
• Year 7 Celebration Evening & Art Show:
Thursday 30 October (Week 4)
• Year 8 Celebration Evening & Art Show:
Wednesday 5 November (Week 5)
• Year 9 Graduation & Art Show:
Friday 7 November (Week 5).
It is an expectation that every Middle
School student attends their relevant
celebration evening and all parents and
siblings are warmly invited to attend also.
Tickets are free but need to be booked at
www.trybooking.com/FXWN. Please note:
there is no need to book a seat for your
Middle Schooler if it is their respective
Celebration Evening (we have already
allocated seating for the cohort being
featured). Also, in order to guarantee every
family a place, we ask you to try to keep
to your ‘four seat quota’. If you definitely
need more than four seats, please contact
Mrs Trainor in the Middle School Office.

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS
If ever you needed proof of the rich diversity
of talent across the All Saints community,
during the September holidays, Jessica
Lawand (Year 8) travelled to Melbourne to
compete in the National Youth Wrestling
Championships in the Girls 12-13 year age
group.
In the finals, she pinned a much heavier
component towards the end of the first
of two rounds and was awarded the gold
medal! What a wonderful achievement!
A reminder that if there are any notable
extra-curricular achievements you’d like
acknowledged, please contact the Middle
School Office [email protected] and
pass on the details.

Problematic Internet Use
“There is nothing easy about being a parent
... It is a journey like no other and sometimes
we all need help to navigate the highway
of parenthood. Enter the internet and a
million other devices, and suddenly there’s
a whole new world to navigate – complete
with delights, challenges and obstacles.
Collectively, we don’t have generations’
worth of knowledge about how to keep our
children safe online, but together, today,
we can make sure their online experiences
are safe ones. As parents, you need to
understand your child’s digital world,
because their tech skills, together with your
maturity, life experiences and knowledge,
are going to make this parenting journey into
cyberspace as successful and stress – free
as possible. After all, technology itself is not
the issue; it is the user of the technology
who creates the risks and dangers.”
Susan McLean, Sexts, Texts & Selfies
“The internet appears to be capable
of altering the mood, motivation,
concentration, and producing a dissociating
and disinhibiting experience for users;
for some individuals, patterns of use can
transform to abuse, taking on a compulsive
quality. Studies suggest that the internet
may have psychological properties that are
capable of altering mood and behaviour,
often with little or no awareness. Many of
the daily spheres of behaviour, including
work, appear to be effected by this powerful
technology.”
Dr David Greenfield, Centre for
Internet Behaviour USA
“Problematic internet use:
• Is more common in adolescent males
than females
• Is often connected to online gaming sites
• Takes over their life of the young person
to the exclusion of all else; school, family,
eating and sleeping
• Leads to many other mental and physical
health issues
• Needs to be addressed as a serious
mental health issue and suitable
treatment obtained from either your GP or
through and adolescent psychologist.”

Library Renovation Update
On Thursday of next week, we begin our
move to The Zone in the Senior School.
This should take two days and, during this
time, the Library will be closed between
8:30am and 3:15pm. We will, however, be
open for students before and after School
as usual. Normal operations should begin
from Monday 27 October. As mentioned
last week, Middle School Library classes
will continue and the recreational reading
and research resources needed by students
and staff will be available despite being in a
smaller location. Our opening hours will also
remain the same throughout this period.
It is proposed that the newly renovated
Senior/Middle Library will be ready for the
beginning of Term 3 2015.

AB Paterson Public Speaking
The following students participated in the AB
Paterson Public Speaking Competition which
began this week:
• Year 7: Cate Cameron, Jack Carroll,
Harrison Katsanevas, Henry Collins,
Noah Tindiglia, Connor McLaren-Kennedy
and Emma Maddock. Congratulations to
Cate, Jack, Harrison, Henry and Noah on
their selection for the Finals rounds which
will be held next Wednesday 22 October
beginning at 4:30pm (the same night as
Musical Showcase).
• Year 8: Olivia Broadley, Fenlan Miller,
Adam Smith and Lakshmi Sithirasenan.
Congratulations to Fen, Adam and
Lakshmi on their selection in the Finals
rounds next Thursday 23 October
beginning at 4.30pm
• Year 9: William Choy, Finn Arrowsmith,
Savannah Tindiglia, Natesh Sivakumaran.
Congratulations to William, Finn and
Natesh on their selection for the Finals
rounds which will be held next Thursday
23 October beginning at 4.30pm.
The Grand Finals will be held on the same
nights after the Finals rounds.
Billy Cart Derby
Friday 31 October will see the Billy Cart
Derby in full swing and parents and friends
need to be aware of the special parking
arrangements on the day. It is requested
that both the Administration Car Park
(above Year 7) and parking under the Early
Childhood Centre be clear of all vehicles
by 9:15am on the morning of the race as
both areas are used for the race. The Senior
School Car Park offers alternative parking
on the day. This weekend is the second
last weekend of opportunity for students to
create their billy carts and we are hoping for
as many entries as possible. The carts must
have three or more wheels, a brake (which
can be as simple as a lever of wood which
applies friction to the road surface when
pulled backwards), steering (yes rope is the
choice of champions here!) and no sharp
projections. The billy carts can be dropped
off at School this weekend, and after School
next week – our drop off area is behind the
Year 7 class rooms and this can be accessed
via the concrete ramp outside the Uniform
Shop.

‘GIVEATHONG’ – FRIDAY 31 OCTOBER
A reminder to keep filling those Giveathon
boxes – just two weeks to go!
Not only do we improve the lives of many
people across the world, but as we give it
changes us. Perhaps the most amazing
miracle is when we discover that the real joy
in life doesn’t come from getting but rather
from giving; an opportunity to change many
lives!
THREADS 2014
Congratulations to all involved in the Fashion
Parade spectacular that took place on
Monday evening. The success of Threads,
‘Boardwalk Empire’ was enjoyed by a
capacity audience who witnessed a feast
of fashion from Years 9-12 hosted by Year
12 students Amber Lo and Phoebe Hanau.
Highlights of the night included the Academy
of Design’s Boardwalk Empire designs,
outfits from the ‘Girls Just Want to Have Fun’
classes, the Australian Wool Awards finalists
medallion presentation, ‘Nature in Flight’
tops, ‘Cultures’, ‘My Best GAP Year’, the
stunning ‘Year 12 Collection’ and music by
Jace Fleming, Lilly Papas, Molly Smith and
David Rogger-Amies. The top two awards
on the night, Designer of the Year and Best

2015 STUDENT LEADERS
The School Leaders for 2015 were
announced at the special Pegasus Awards
assembly on Wednesday. The School
Captains for 2015 are Isabella Mortimore
and Timothy Delahunty, and the ViceCaptains are Phoebe Nind and Joseph
Allocca.
On Friday, students voted for next year’s
House Leaders. These are important
decisions, and the voting by the student
body plays a vital role in determining the
leadership positions for the Class of 2015.
I was very pleased to see the number of
students who stepped forward as candidates

WISE WORDS
This week marks the third anniversary of the
death of Apple founder, Steve Jobbs. “For
the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror
every morning and asked myself: ‘If today
were the last day of my life, would I want
to do what I am about to do today?’ And
whenever the answer has been ‘No’ for too
many days in a row, I know I need to change
something.” Steve Jobs (1955-2011)
I’m sure Steve Jobs’ mantra can be applied
to the way we live our lives in general and is
certainly a timely reminder how we can use
the remainder of 2014 to improve our habits
to better prepare us for 2015.

CHAPLAINCY MATTERS
Term 4 is undoubtedly the busiest term
of the year in terms of School events and
functions. It is also the most emotional and
rewarding term in that it is the time when
the School showcases the achievements
of both students and the staff who have
coaxed, encouraged, taught, challenged and
sometimes ‘kicked butt’ (metaphorically
of course) in order to draw the best out of
each individual. It is also a time for parents
to gather alongside the rest of the School
community to celebrate the year’s work
– and marvel at the emerging giftedness
evidenced in their children.
On Monday we celebrated the production of
Threads which was a wonderful tribute to the
dedicated work and creativity of our Home
Economics students and staff. It takes much
courage to not only design and produce
a garment of clothing, but to personally
strut it out before a very large audience of
parents, staff, peers and visitors. And yet
our beautiful girls did so with aplomb and
as much confidence as they could possibly
muster providing an exhilarating and awefilled evening of real accomplishment.
One of the greatest triumphs of the evening,
in my view, is that each student was able to
give her own expression to her creation –
which is a hallmark of the ethos of All Saints.
Ralph Waldo Emmerson is quoted as saying:
To be yourself in a world that is constantly
trying to make you something else is the
greatest accomplishment.
This week has also heralded the
announcement of our new School Captains.
Election requires a decision based on the
experience and encounters that voters
have had with nominees. I believe that
it is in these moments of decision that
choice is based on the perceived integrity
of character displayed by each nominee.
False personas are usually recognised, and
rightly dismissed. The fact that there was
an abundant pool of worthy recipients for
School Captain leadership bears testament
to the abiding sense of the uniqueness of
every person.
Saints Alive
We at All Saints rejoice and celebrate the
exceptionality of each individual. More
than that, we hope that each person
will recognise and celebrate their own
unique being, and that no one can ever
be completely replaced. Every one of us is
distinct and one-of-a-kind. For those who
are Christians, we may well cry out with the
Psalmist:

Psalm 139: 14-16
The Pegasus assembly on Wednesday also
celebrated the individuality of our students
in their creative writing endeavours. And it
struck me once again that if we allow God
to author our lives, then our lives become
God’s story, and we are both blessed by, and
become a blessing to others.
May you take time to celebrate the
uniqueness of your being today, and rejoice
in it!

FROM THE SICK BAY
Spring has sprung and along with it flowers, pollens, bees,
smoke from burn-offs and a multitude of other allergens.
The Asthma Foundation site has fabulous information
regarding asthma, asthma emergencies, how to recognise
asthma symptoms and, most importantly, how to use your
puffer properly so the device delivers the appropriate dose the
first time.
www.asthmaaustralia.org.au
www.asthmaaustralia.org.au/Puffing_Properly
At All Saints we encourage students who have asthma to carry
their puffers in their bag, preferably with their own spacer,
especially when heading offsite for sports or excursions. The
Asthma Foundation recommends that a spacer is used even
with the administration of a preventer.
Of course, if students require ventolin at School and have
forgotten their own supply, we are able to provide both
ventolin and spacer.
For those students who may be allergic or anaphylactic to
bees or any other stinger, please ensure that their EPIPEN
is in their possession especially when heading outside the
School grounds on excursions or sport.
Any concerns or to update any medical information relevant
to your child/children at School, please don’t hesistate to
contact me.
