GROWING THROUGH GRACE; LEARNING THROUGH LOVE
From the Headmaster
On Tuesday morning at precisely 11:00am
on the eleventh day of the eleventh month,
the School experienced something that
is very rare indeed – a moment’s silence
across all three campuses. It was radically
unfamiliar. The habitual sounds of teachers
expounding, children playing and basketballs
bouncing were broken by a subtle call to
stillness and quiet. A lone bugler played The
Last Post, inviting us towards a brief period
of solemnity and reflection. The elegiac
notes somehow disturb the psyche. Those
of us who are familiar with their rising and
falling cadence know they speak of grief. Yet
even those hearing them for the first time
seemed strangely subdued by their haunting
resonance. It was a moment, however brief,
for each of us to think about our loved ones,
those upon whom we rely for our wellbeing;
and a time moreover for us to try to imagine
what it must have been like for those who
have been left childless and alone as a
result of war.
The First World War was called ‘the war to
end all wars’, a prophecy which spoke of the
horror of what had passed, but which seems
with hindsight rather naïve. The war on
those seeking to establish an Islamic State
is but the latest in a litany of conflict that
has ravaged our world ever since, only this
time the enemy is ‘everywhere and unseen’.
This latest war has the potential to divide
our world in hitherto unimaginable ways,
and we must resist this division with courage
and determination. We must challenge

and resist the dominant racial and cultural
stereotypes which are presented to us by
the purveyors of fear; we must hold on to the
reality that the terrorists are few in number
whilst peacemakers abound; and we must
continue to celebrate the racial and cultural
diversity which characterises both the Gold
Coast and our School.
I am not alone in feeling an immense sense
of pride in the cultural diversity that exists
at All Saints. Apart from the diversity that
permeates our domestic student roll, we
are blessed indeed to have our rich and
vibrant international programmes which
bring so many courageous and delightful
students to us from across the seas.
Mr Bartlett, our Director of International
Programmes, Mr Moore and Mr Cherry, our
Head and Assistant Head of Boarding, and
their various teams work extremely hard to
make sure our international students feel
at home here, as only then will they be able
to thrive. Thrive they certainly do – running
assemblies, performing in our co-curricular
and sporting programmes with enthusiasm
and subtly instilling in all of our hearts a
sense of our connection to a wider and
endlessly fascinating world. Our international
students bring different perspectives which
offer the potential for greater understanding.
Like all of us in this place, they have their
own stories to tell, which are invariably
enlightening. They encourage us, through
their example, to look to the wider world for
exciting opportunities to learn and grow.

Economics Breakfast
They are one of the reasons why so many
of our Australian students embrace the
opportunity of overseas exchanges. Yet they
also remind us, when we get to know them,
that these different stories and perspectives
cover more profound connections and
similarities. They are people first and
Chinese or Brazilian or Taiwanese or
German second. It is pleasing to watch
from a distance how the awkwardness
and suspicion that difference brings can
quickly melt into friendship and constructive
relationship when the time is taken to get to
know each other.
It is remarkable that this same impulse
towards relationship occurred, albeit in
fleeting moments, between the soldiers
fighting each other in the First World War.
Stories abound describing soccer matches
that took place on the crippling mud
of no-man’s land when hostilities were
temporarily ceased for Christmas Day. For
one day, these young men were able to
abandon their uniforms and the baggage
that went with them in favour of their
common humanity, which was always there
but somehow suffocated by the dictates of
others who were often far removed from
the action. It is this same impulse towards
understanding forged through our common
humanity that should inspire each one of us
to ‘love our neighbours as ourselves’ and
thus become instruments for peace and
harmony in a war-torn, fragmented world.

FROM THE HEAD OF JUNIOR SCHOOL
Years 3-6 Sport Training
The final sports training session for Years
3-6 students was held this week. Next
Tuesday is the Years 3-6 End of Year
Presentation and students may need to get
home early to prepare for this very important
event, hence no training. Next Thursday 20
November is the last round of APS Sport for
the year.
Staffing Changes
There are two staffing changes in the Junior
School for 2015. Year 3 teacher, Mrs Tracey
French, will leave the School at the end of
this year to join her husband who works in
Bangkok. Tracey has taught at All Saints
for a number of years over several different
blocks of time, having accompanied her
husband with his overseas employment to
various destinations. Tracey has been an
excellent member of the Junior School team,
we will miss her and she leaves the School
with our grateful thanks and with our best
wishes.
Junior School Music teacher, Miss Debra
Hyland, has decided that she will pursue
challenges elsewhere in 2015 and will
complete her work at All Saints at the end of
the year. Debra has been with us for the last
two and half years and she has had some
wonderful successes at the School, including
the outstanding production of Aladdin earlier
this year. Debra has brought a high level
of musicality to our students and had been
a valuable member of the Performing Arts
Department. She also leaves the School with
our thanks and best wishes for the future.
Whilst we have already filled the class
teaching role for next year, we have
advertised online through Seek and on our
School website for a new Music Specialist
this week.
Candy Canes and Other Lollies
At about this time of year we usually
have children thinking about distributing
Christmas cards and candy canes to friends
and classmates. Whilst I appreciate the
Christmas cheer behind this gesture, the last
thing that young children need is a sugar fix
at School. If you have some burning desire
that means your children must give lollies
(not sure why you would have this burning
desire, but if you do) please understand
that these lollies are not to be consumed
at School and children found doing this
will have their ‘stash’ confiscated (bah,
humbug!).

ICAS Medals and More
Congratulations to Madeline Allars in Year
6 and Daniel McLaren-Kennedy in Year 4
who are receiving an ICAS Writing Medal
at a ceremony in Brisbane on Monday 1
December. These medals are awarded to
the top student in the state in their year level
for the University of New South Wales Writing
Competition.
Tom Hauck also was successful in winning
the Australian Mathematics Competition
prize for the fourth year in a row! This prize
is awarded to the top 0.03% of students who
sit this competition in Australia. These are
truly outstanding achievements!

FROM THE HEAD OF MIDDLE SCHOOL
IT AIN’T OVER ‘TIL IT’S OVER
Whilst it is most worthwhile stopping to once
again reflect on three wonderful Middle
School Celebration Evenings over the past
fortnight … well done to one and all … it
is also worth remembering that we are
still going full steam ahead right up until
the end of the school year on Thursday
27 November. There are still outstanding
summative assessment items in all subjects
in all year levels, and these all-important
tasks have a significant bearing on your
child’s end-of-year report. A reminder that, in
the case of the four Core subjects (English,
History, Mathematics and Science), we
are reporting to the Standard Elaborations
as laid out by the Queensland Curriculum
and Assessment Authority (QCAA). What
does that all mean, I hear you ask? It
means the Core teachers are being asked
to assign each student with a standard of
achievement that reflects an individual’s
skills and understanding at the end of
the year. Rather than results being strictly
cumulative, teachers will be determining an
‘on balance’ judgment that gives students
a chance to be appropriately acknowledged
for any progress they might make over a
sequence of assessment tasks throughout
the year. Clear as mud? Ask your child’s Core
teacher for more details.
STAFF MOVEMENTS
Over the past month, we have been busily
sorting out staffing for 2015 and this
week hope to finalise the last of the new
appointments. I will thus be able to inform
you of all the Core teaching allocations for
the New Year in next week’s edition of Saints
Alive.

ALLOCATIONS 2015
A reminder that, as per previous
communications, both the Junior and
Middle Schools will be releasing the Core
Teacher allocations for next year in the week
preceding the commencement of classes
in 2015; that is, the week commencing
Monday 19 January. Parents will be able to
access this information via your child’s page
on the Parent Portal.

This initiative allows students the time to
savour 2014 and minimise any anxieties
they might have regarding a new year level
and teacher. Please understand that if we
make any exception in this regard, it would
severely undermine the decision we have
made to hold off the release date, and we
would no doubt be inundated with inquiries

Last Friday 7 November, the Year 9
community gathered to celebrate the
inaugural Year 9 Graduation Ceremony.
The Year 9 Co-ordinator, Mrs Marnie
Wainwright, and her team did an exemplary
job of celebrating three years of adolescent
milestones for the Class of 2017 – and the
Year 9 students and parents responded
superbly. All in all it was a ‘bitter-sweet’
evening whereby families understandably
began looking forward to the next three
years in the Senior School, but there was
also an authentic sense of nostalgia out
there as we paused to reflect on the cohort’s
Middle Schooling experiences.

After once again acknowledging the Middle School’s Foundation Day Award winners,
Amber Liebenow and Nicholaus Harding, the equally-prestigious Archbishop Aspinall
Awards were presented to Georgie Barnao and Liam Harris. Finally, the Case Cup for
exemplary commitment to Community Service across the year was awarded to Erin
Liebenow.
Congratulations to all of these exceptional young people from the entire community.

Lord,
We say a prayer right here right now for a year of great renown,
These 9s are beaut, we’ve often said, they’ve rarely let us down.
They studied here, they partied there, they’ve led our School with pride,
Let’s hope they scrub up half as good when they’ve reached the other side …
Of Senior School: the next big step, but let’s not get distracted.
Lord, here’s a précis of this year, I’ve kept it quite contracted.
Right off they bussed away to camp: up north to Alex Heads
The sand was hot, the air was hot, we had barbeques for beds.
But from that camp, we voted, picked, hoped the cream had risen …
Then packed back up, bussed back down south, and trudged back here to ‘prison’.
And when the mums saw how they’d changed, they whispered, “Here’s a lark!
They’ll have to lug their bags for miles to where I’ve had to park!”
We chose our leaders, gave out badges, named folk to lead the team,
So-began a year of “ownership”, of daring to “have a dream”.
They’ve led cross country, aths and quiz, they’ve led us in the pool,
They’ve lip synced dressed as Dora’s ‘Boots’, and fed House Spirit fuel,
And when Mrs Wainwright took the reins as Mr G had to depart,
You kept on keeping on, stood tall, on that I must remark.
It’s work, work, work, when you join Year 9, the tasks soon mount like … mountains,
Some handle stress, just fob it off, while some cry tears in fountains.
But Raves in Caves and Battling Bands and Eucharists provoking,
Kept those smiles: pride of place, you never gave up joking.
But when the girls in THREADS catwalked in prints that were quite stark …
Their fathers’ eyes, they prowled the room, like hungry tiger sharks.
But thankfully, you’ve had great staff to guide you on your way,
O’Connor, Jenkins, Lynch, McKlaren, Wickman, Walker, hey?
Then add in Porker, Callaghan and Boswell don’t forget
Then you’ve a champion team whose like I’ve never seen … not yet.
They’ve cared and mentored, challenged you to ignite the vital spark
Of inspiration, in your head, not just focus on the marks.
So the year has flown and you’re ready to fly, to the Senior School, so go!
But don’t forget us in the Middle, we’re a launchpad, don’t you know?
God bless Mrs Wainwright for a year of loving care,
God bless the class 2-0-1-7, let them safely dare …
To dream and search for new horizons, as they set to disembark,

Asian Banquet
Year 9 Cultural Studies students, under
the direction of Mrs Skye Daniel and with
the assistance of Mrs Fox, prepared a
sumptuous Asian Banquet as part of their
investigation into Australia’s Engagement
with Asia through their elective course
Cultural Studies. Working in groups of
three and choosing an authentic Asian
recipe from a variety of countries including
Japan, China, Thailand, Vietnam, India and
Malaysia, the Year 9 students prepared and
cooked a delicious range of Asian cuisine
which they than shared with their peers and
staff. This served as a wonderful culminating
activity for the class.
Asia Wise Competition
Congratulations to Toby Krabbenbos (9L)
who recently participated in the Asia Wise
Competition in his elective subject Year 9
Cultural Studies. Toby was the top student
for the week ending Friday 7 November
in the Quick Quizzes section in the online
competition. As a reward for this success,
Asia Wise is offering Toby the opportunity
to write a set of 10 questions on a topic
of his choice that will be uploaded to the
website for students from all over Australia
and New Zealand to complete. Asia Wise
will acknowledge the questions with Toby’s
name and also with the School name. Well
done, Toby.

QCS TEST RESULTS
For the first time, students’ Queensland Core
Skills (QCS) Test results will be released prior
to senior certification in December. This year,
students can access their individual result,
graded A–E, from 9:00am on Tuesday 18
November via their learning account on the
Student Connect website.
Parents and students are reminded that a
student’s individual QCS Test result does
not determine their OP. Instead, subject
and school group results from the QCS
Test are used as part of statistical scaling
processes undertaken to calculate students’
OPs. Using group data enables the QCAA
to make a fair and equitable comparison
of the achievements of students in
different schools studying different subject
combinations.
2015 YEAR 12 LEADERSHIP CAMP
Just a reminder that the Year 12 Leaders
for 2015 are to attend a special Leadership
Camp, January 21-23 at Tyalgum (Tweed
Valley). As usual, it will be conducted with
close staff supervision and under the
guidance of certified Outdoor Education
instructors. Students received detailed
information at their badging ceremony
regarding this important preparation for their
responsibilities next year.

The final stage of auditions will occur over
the next week. The cast, orchestra and
crew have now been published and, after
dramatic and further musical auditions,
we will be in a position to announce the
lead roles during the last week of term. We
apologise that this may feel like a drawn-out
process, however, all of this has to occur
on top of the already busy exam, marking,
reporting and End-of-Year Speech Nights
and Celebrations that are a routine part of
the calendar.

Giveathon Concert
The performances by the Senior Strings,
Kombumerri Chorale, Birrung Voices and
various soloists last Thursday evening
at Robina Anglican Church was simply
breathtaking. I had the privilege of sitting in
the audience for the entire concert and it
was hard to believe they were performances
by students. Congratulations to all students
but, in particular, our Year 12 students
for whom this was their final performance
on such a professional sounding concert.
Mr Bardsley, Mrs Mason, Mrs Wilson, Ms
Morgan and Mrs O’Keefe, the Music staff
who rehearsed, conducted and extended
the students, should feel extremely proud of
their achievements! Thanks to the Reverend
Stewart Perry and the parishioners of
Robina Anglican Church for allowing us to
use their beautiful venue and for supporting
the concert, and also to the parents who
came to support their children and Givea-thong. You raised $455.75 towards the
appeal.

Private Music and Drama &
Communication Lessons
Students currently enrolled in private Music
and Drama & Communication lessons (in
2014) will automatically be rolled over into
lessons for 2015. There is no need to reenrol in lessons.
If you wish to cancel Music and/or Drama
& Communication lessons for your son
or daughter for 2015, notification of
cancellation must be received no later than
Thursday 27 November 2014, ie before the
end of this semester.
The correct procedure for cancelling lessons
is to complete a ‘Cancellation/Change of
Enrolment’ form which is available online
on the parent’s portal under Performing
Arts or from the Performing Arts Office in
the Holloway Music Centre. This form is to
be returned to Mrs Hopper, Performing Arts
Administrator. No other form of notification
can be accepted. (Failure to submit this
form before the end of the semester could
result in you being charged for the following
semester’s lessons).
Music Honours ProgramME
Following a very successful first year,
the Music Honours Programme will
continue in 2015 for outstanding
musicians in the Middle or Senior
Schools who are intending to pursue
tertiary studies in Music following their
time at school.
The programme runs on a Friday
afternoon (during regular Sport time)
from 12:30–3:30pm and includes time
for individual practice, master classes
(where students perform to each other
and receive feedback), workshops on
performing, aural and musicianship
development and chamber music.
Students will also perform publicly
in a number of concerts and in the
community.
Students who wish to be considered
for this programme for 2015 should
discuss their interest with their
instrumental/voice teacher as
acceptance is by invitation only
(following a recommendation from the
Music teacher). Current Music Honours
students will need to re-apply for 2015
(again through their Music teacher).
Mr Nigel Bardsley (Head of Strings)
will again co-ordinate the programme
and there will be involvement from a
number of other Music staff during
the year. There is no cost involved to
students.

APS Summer Sport
The results for Round 7 are shown below. This week, the 2014 Summer Sport Finals are played where every team has a game to play to finalise their
position on the competition ladder. The top two teams in each ladder play off for the Premiership, 3rd plays 4th and so on. It is a very exciting day for
all involved and I wish all our teams good luck in finishing the season off strongly. For the statisticians amongst you, we have 23 buses, taking just
under 700 students to 18 different venues for this week’s finals (the other 400 students will be playing at All Saints). All Saints feature in 52% of
Premiership games (1 v 2) and in 84% of games involving the top four schools on the ladders. These results speak for themselves and come from the
many hours of practice that the students have put in with their indefatigable coaching staff this season – thank you to you all. Games to be played at
All Saints are Open Boys Touch, Open Boys and Girls Water Polo, Open Girls Basketball, Open Girls Softball and Boys and Girls Cricket. The students in
these games will benefit by playing on the best kept school grounds in Queensland – thank you to Mr Steve Jones and his amazing ground staff who
do a brilliant job in making our playing fields look pristine every week. A reminder to all students that there is no sport training next week. Next Friday,
the Middle School will participate in their Inter-House skipping challenge, Year 10 will go off-site on a beach walk and swim excursion and Year 11 will
be on shutdown.

CHAPLAINCY MATTERS
“You would not be seeking me”, says God in
St Augustine’s writings, “If I had not already
found you.”
My weekly sojourn with the Pre Prep class is
a highlight of my week. We have introduced
a programme known as ‘Godly-play’ which
works on the premise that God is already
at work in our little people, and aims to
encourage further wondering about God. It
seeks not to impose a particular image of
God on the children, but rather to allow an
image individual to each child to emerge,
and play with the child. The sacred stories
are told very simply and with focussed
reverence so that the child can fill in the
gaps in a way pertinent to each one.
After each story the questions are asked:
“What was the best part of this story?”
and “What is the most important part of
this story?” Concluding questions include
“Where are you in this story?” or “What part
of this story is about you?”
These are typically Anglican questions in
a theology which encourages questioning,
and allows for substantial diversity of
belief within a framework which embraces
scripture, tradition, reason and experience.
It is no surprise therefore that the youngest
people in our School draw pictures of God
as water, the smoke on the mountain, or a
girl God in pink, or my special friend, aside
from the stereotypical old male God with
impressive beard.
Surprisingly, increasingly, conversations
with some Senior School students reveal a
very similar sense of wondering – perhaps
a more curious enquiry. Contrary to what
I was led to believe by people outside of
this School setting who assured me that
chaplaincy in Australia is a really tough
gig because of the predominantly secular
nature of the country, I have found a
largely respectful and surprisingly reverent
response. My own wondering suggests that
perhaps we are encountering this respectful
curiosity due to the absence or rejection
of Christianity prevalent in many of the
Generation X parents to whom our students
belong. Of course it is true that many of our
students regard Christianity with a certain
degree of disdain, which, in the nature of
All Saints, is also completely respected.

Perhaps much of this has to do with a jaded,
disappointing, unconvincing and often
misguided understanding of Christianity
and

Nevertheless, it was an exhilarating
experience to spend a lunch break with

In a booklet entitled The Invitation – a Call to
Life by Gemma Simmonds, she writes:
The Bible is a book of hide and seek, where
God seeks us and we run away, and we so
often seek God in what is less than God.
This reflects the dynamic of our relationship
with a God whom we constantly seek to cut
down to our own size, and who is always
surprising us with ways that are not ours.

My prayer this week, as we send our Year
12 students out into the adult world, is that
they may be open to the surprising and
often unexpected presence of God in their
lives. I pray that this will be invigorating and
filled with the adventures that only God can
devise in order that they may live lives of
deep significance and, in so doing, change
the world for the better.

To ensure timely distribution of bus passes in the New Year,

EXISTING BUS PASS HOLDERS
At the end of each school year, please ensure the current
pass is retained to be used in the new school year until the
new pass is issued. Students with an existing bus pass need
only re-apply for a 2015 bus pass if your child is moving from
Primary to Secondary School, repeating a grade, or changing
their home address or school.
