15th October, 2014
Dear Parents/Caregivers, Staff, Students and Friends of St Thomas’,
We, at St Thomas’ School embarked on our Visible Learning journey. Visible
Learning is a BCE supported initiative that explores how evidence can be used to
create innovation in the learning environment and know what actually works
best in schools to improve learning.
This first stage involves teaching and knowing the characteristics of a ‘good
learner’. Each Wednesday our whole school comes together for a Visible
Learning assembly when the characteristics of a good learner at St Thomas’ are
taught and presented. This is followed up in each of the classrooms by looking
for teachable moments which show one of the characteristics. Awards are also
presented during our Thursday school assembly reflective of characteristics
already launched. You may wish to use our ‘characters’ at home to further
support your child’s learning journey.
Bob Bounce Back
When we show the try again attitude; when we have another go; when we stick
with it, even when things get tough; when we make a mistake or don’t get what
we want but pick up and keep going.
Olive Organised
Being prepared; having all we need to begin a task; knowing where to go next
to complete a job; starting early and not leaving things until the last minute.
Gertie-Get-a-long
Being friendly and welcoming; working with others; not always being the boss;
playing by others rules; working as part of a team; sharing requirements;
listening to other points of view; being ready to admit that other ideas are as
valid as our own.
Together these characteristics, plus those to come, assist us to be ‘good
learners’ at St Thomas’.
Congratulations to four of our Prep students who have been shortlisted in the
2014 BCE Prize for Art - Lily Keogh, Billy Carter, Annabelle Yeates, Harrington
McGuire. The Awards presentation will take place this Friday at the Collectors’
Terrace at the Queensland Museum. The Art Show is on this weekend at the
Queensland Museum if you would like to view all shortlisted entries and prize
winners.

Term 1 commences
Tomorrow our Year 6/7 Leaders will be involved in a leadership reflection day. This is an opportune
moment for them to spend time looking back over their journey and yet looking ahead to new
beginnings. A life well lived is a life lived for others – our St Thomas’ leaders will no doubt reflect on the
sentiment in these words of Albert Einstein.
As a school we are already looking to 2015 with many things on the agenda. Our 2015 Prep Parent
Information Night will be held on Monday 27th October, the start of a new journey for these young
children and their families. We are also involved with staff and class planning for 2015.
Please contact the office immediately (if you have not already done so)if your child/ren will not be
returning to St Thomas’ in 2015 as we need to finalise classes and fill any vacancies from our waiting
list. Thank you.
If, for educational purposes, you have a class placement request for your child for 2015, please
contact the office in writing or by email [email protected] by Friday, 31st October, 2014.
Such requests are to be addressed to the Principal. Please do not make any requests through the class
teacher.
Staffing and class structures are not finalised until next month, so for this reason please do not request
teachers by name or request specific classes for other than educational purposes.
Only requests based on sound educational reasons will be considered. A letter outlining the class
placement process forms part of this newsletter.
Professional development continues for staff with teachers involved in Read to Learn; Developing our
Education Brief; Curriculum Support Teacher Network Day; All staff participating in a day next Monday
by Brendan Spillane – Critical Conversations, high performing teams and crucial conversations; Budget
2015 workshop for myself and Robyn Weston, our Finance Secretary; Workplace Health and Safety
Officer day and my attendance at the Australian Primary Principals Conference in Sydney next week.
This term always sees us looking back and yet projecting forward in all areas of school life, the area of
Professional Development included.
God’s blessings.

R.E. NEWS
October is World Mission Month and our focus is to support the crucial work of the Jamaican Catholic
Church. Our school and the other Catholic schools in the Brisbane Archdiocese will play an integral role
in helping people turn away from violence and crime to seek a new future through the power of
education and the spirit of Jesus Christ. Sadly Jamaica is a nation deeply troubled and many
communities across Jamaica live in constant fear. Archbishop Coleridge and our own Pam Betts endorse
our Catholic schools actively supporting the work of Catholic Mission. With your support we, the St
Thomas’ school community, can help the youth of Jamaica grow up to be fully alive and achieve their
dreams of a positive and hope filled future. The Helping Hands Group, under the guidance of our Year
Five teachers, Ms Dilley and Miss Langmaid, will lead the fundraising campaign around the theme of
‘Soctober: Sock it to poverty’. Lock in the date: Wednesday, 22nd October for a fun happening at St
Thomas’.
I have experienced the generosity of the St Thomas’ community and I know Catholic Mission greatly
appreciate all that you do and give.

2015 Committee Nominations
Before school started this term, I held my final meeting with the 2014 committee. We have had a
fantastic year working together, and can honestly say that our meetings have been a pleasure. While we
have ideas and plans which extend into 2015 and beyond, a number of us will be unable to continue on
the committee next year. If you are interested in becoming more involved in the P&F, please feel free to
contact me or any of the other committee members to better understand what a position on the 2015
committee would involve.

This year, we found that none of the positions was particularly onerous, as we all had specific
responsibilities, but were able to work together. If you and a friend would like to work together on a
particular role, that is also a possibility. Last year, for example, we had 2 nominations for the position of
Communications Co-ordinator, so we elected both of them, and divided the role. Almost anything is
possible!
Annual General Meeting
The P&F AGM is only a month away- Monday, November 10th. We have a General Meeting at 7pm, and
the AGM will be held immediately afterwards, at approximately 8pm. At the general meeting we will be
discussing our financial commitments for 2015. This year’s Committee has also come up with further
improvements for next year, which will be outlined. The AGM will have annual reports from the Principal,
President, Tuckshop Convenor and Treasurer. The new committee will be elected, and we will celebrate
with few drinks afterwards. Keep it free! Siobhan Carroll, P&F President [email protected]
