1. Celebrating the Life of George Fry
The family of George Fry invite his friends to a celebration in his honour. At his request, it is to be a joyous occasion to be held at the Black
Box Theatre, St. Thomas University, on Saturday, October 25 from 6-10pm. Formalities (and the term is used loosely) at 7pm.
"Let there be lots of music, flowers, food and wine. And no eulogies. And everyone must dance. Lots of Latin American music, sambas,
rhumbas and congas, if anyone can remember how to do them. Celebrate my life; don't mourn my death. I think I did the most I could

2. Calithumpians present Fall Haunted Hikes 2014
Haunted Hikes are back from the dead for fall! Our signature, lantern-lit tours of Fredericton's scary, eerie areas are back for a limited
time. Guaranteed to please all of Freddy Beach’s after dark fun seekers! Fall Haunted Hikes run Fridays and Saturdays until October 24 and
25, with special hikes on Oct 29 and 30, starting at 7pm.
Patrons will meet many ghosts and ghouls from Fredericton's past on this dramatic tour featuring spine-tingling frights and funny, bonetickling gags. Our dynamic street theatre is fun for the whole family as you encounter phantom thespians along the trail.
Come to the Coach House at 796a Queen Street, at the corner of Church and Queen, beside Gallery 78. Admission is $14 per head for
adults, and $9 for children under 12. Group and family rates are available. Tickets are available at the door. The box office opens at

4. How Was This Monster Created? A Chat with Playwright Walter Learning and Director Caleb Marshall Oct 16
In 1974, Theatre New Brunswick made theatre history with the world premiere of Frankenstein, The Man Who became God. Before the
final draft was complete, TNB had already received a dozen inquiries from other theatre companies curious to learn when they could
produce what was already being referred to as a modern classic. Written by Alden Nowlan and Walter Learning, the play broke all
previous box office records at The Playhouse, received 15 standing ovations over 17 performances and was attended by an estimated 20%
of the city’s population.
This event will take place on Thursday, October 16 at 7pm at The Fredericton Public Library. TNB and the Fredericton Public Library invite
you to join us for a conversation with playwright Walter Learning and director Caleb Marshall as they discuss the history of this classic

6. Canadian Author Beth Powning Comes Home Oct 17
After twenty-five years on a New Brunswick farm, award-winning Canadian author, Beth Powning, came to understand the land she calls

experience the spirit of home in nature in this new edition of her seminal book.

7. Gaskell's Ghosts: Colloquium at the Department of English UNB Oct 17
The first talk in the Department of English 2014-15 Colloquium series will be given by Dr Vicky Simpson, and will be entitled Gaskell's
thGhosts: The Phantasmagoric Narration of The Old Nurse’s Story. The 19 century phantasmagoria, or magic lantern show, serves Dr
Simpson as a model for understanding Elizabeth Gaskell’s investigation of the supernatural in The Old Nurse’s Story. Through the medium
of the magic lantern fictional ghosts are rendered "real" to the audience; Gaskell’s tale shows that a narrative can do the same.
The Old Nurse’s Story is framed as a tale in which ghosts—demanded by an audience eager for entertainment—are filtered through the
acute senses of the narrator Hester. Focusing on the dynamics of narration highlights Hester’s role as entertainer. She translates the multisensory experience of the phantasmagoria using tricks of perception to foster a split consciousness in her listeners. Gaskell’s narrator
shows that the experience of a haunting can be real, even if the stimulus itself—a ghost or a story—is not.

Met Music Director James Levine conducts a spirited new production of Mozart’s masterpiece, directed by Richard Eyre, who sets the
action of this classic domestic comedy in a 19th-century manor house in Seville, but during the gilded age of the late 1920s. Dashing bassbaritone Ildar Abdrazakov leads the cast in the title role of the clever servant, opposite Marlis Petersen as his bride, Susanna, Peter Mattei
as the philandering Count they work for, Marina Poplavskaya as the long-suffering Countess, and Isabel Leonard as the libidinous pageboy
Cherubino.
The live performance (Italian with English subtitles) is presented on Saturday, October 18 at 1:55pm. There will be an encore presentation
on Saturday, December 6 at 12pm.

10. odd sundays at molly’s returns Oct 19
Announcing the beginning of the 2014-2015 season of odd sundays at molly’s, Fredericton’s longest-running, semi-monthly, poetry-andmore, reading-series. We begin next Sunday, October 19 with song, embodied by singer-songwriters from Ottawa, Casey Calvern Comeau,
and Richard Jeffrey.
This week’s event takes place on Sunday, October 19 at 2pm at 554 Queen Street (Molly’s Coffee House). Featuring: Singer-Songwriters
Casey Comeau and Richard Jeffrey. Plus an open set (3 minutes each) and a book draw.
Join us for our first event of the fall with music, as well as our open set, and book draw. All this for the price of admission: buying a drink
and/or lunch from Molly and Daryl; and paying attention to our featured guests, and to those in our open set.
Casey Comeau and Richard Jeffrey have been making appearances since 2000, including at Ottawa’s Bluesfest. Having played in bands
whose genres range from cabaret to experimental to garage rock, they have shared the stage with Stacey Earle, Mark Stuart, Elliott Brood,
the Kruger Brothers, Rae Spoon, Meredith Luce and many more. Emphasizing provocative song writing and using both traditional and
modern sounds, Comeau and Jeffrey produce a graceful blend of country, Acadian folk, rock, and pop. Influences include: Leonard Cohen;
Gillian Welch; baby raccoons; Dead Moon; Johnny Cash; harsh Canadian winters; and an awareness of how short our lives can be.

In James Gray's The Immigrant, Ewa Cybulski (Marion Cotillard) and her sister sail to New York from their native Poland in search of a new
start and the American dream. When they reach Ellis Island, doctors discover that Magda (Angela Sarafyan) is ill, and the two women are

Following the triumphs of the Academy Award–winning Midnight in Paris and Blue Jasmine, Woody Allen returns to the Continent with
Magic in the Moonlight. Set on the banks of the French Riviera amidst the high society of the Roaring Twenties, this sparkling, lighthearted charmer is part May-December romance and part comedy of manners.
Wealthy, middle-aged Englishman Stanley (Academy Award winner Colin Firth, The King’s Speech, The Railway Man) is asked to visit the
household of a rich socialite in the south of France in order to debunk a supposed “spiritual medium” who has the family under her spell.
However, Stanley soon has his ironclad skepticism put to the test when he meets the mystic in the flesh. Sophie (Emma Stone, The Help,
Gangster Squad) is a beautiful young woman who has the ability to look into a person’s eyes and tell them things about their life that no
one else could possibly know. Is it all a con—or could she actually be the real thing? As séances are succeeded by picturesque drives in the
country and strolls along the shoreline of this holiday paradise, Stanley’s po-faced pragmatism begins to give way to the mysteries of
magic—and the thrill of romance.
Firth and Stone are perfectly matched as the stoic Stanley and the effervescent Sophie, and Allen’s masterfully light touch recalls all the
pleasures of his previous classics. With its irrepressible charm and stunningly beautiful setting, Magic in the Moonlight may just have you

14. Fibre Artist Hilary Rice Presentation and Trunk Show Oct 21
Both a talented fibre artist and professional teacher, Hilary Rice will deliver an inspiring visual presentation and take us along her creative
journey at 7pm on Tuesday, October 21 at the Hugh John Flemming Forestry Complex. The cost is $5 at the door.
Along the Silk Road it is said that all things are connected. Each of us moves through our lives, one thing leading to another, the way the
silk journey of long ago was a continuous journey. In her inspirational talk, textile and mixed media artist Hilary Rice will share her story. It
is a journey that acts as a conduit for thoughts and ideas; a journey that winds through a progression of art quilts and into a new world of
creativity.

15. Symphony NB Concert: Celebrating the Passion Oct 21
Symphony New Brunswick opens its 2014-15 season with a concert at Wilmot United Church, on Tuesday October 21 at 7:30pm. The first
program of the season, Celebrating the Passion, reveals the depth and quality of performance in Symphony New Brunswick that has been
developing since Michael Newnham took to the podium.

One of New Brunswick's favourite new Canadians, Ms. Ludmila Knezkova-Hussey will play Tchaikovsky's First Piano Concerto backed by a
55 piece orchestra. This Piano Concerto is one of the best known in Tchaikovsky's repertoire and possibly his most passionate piece.
Keeping the program within the Northern Hemisphere, The Orchestra will also be playing Jean Sibelius' Symphony No. 2. This piece, like
Sibelius' Finlandia, played in the opening concert last season, is passionately patriotic, distinctive and uplifting. Maestro Newnham’s
choice of the Little Suite by Witold Lutosławski for the opening of the season was inspired by his personal passion for Poland and the
influences that its music had on his life and musical development.

16. Atlantic Canada Studies Seminar Series Oct 22
The University of New Brunswick’s Faculty of Arts presents A.J.B. Johnston’s From History to Fiction: The Thomas Pichon Project at 3pm on
October 22, 2014 in Tilley Hall, room 123. A.J.B. Johnston will be talking about the background to his Thomas Pichon project and reading
from his latest novel, The Maze (CBU Press). The project is a quartet of fiction about ambition, longing, and betrayal. The four books follow
th
a central character and an intriguing supporting cast on their adventures in 18 -century France, England, and Atlantic Canada.
Johnston will give an illustrated presentation on his transition from historian to novelist and on some of the sources he uses. A historian at
the Fortress of Louisbourg for 23 years, Johnston’s work focuses on French Colonial history in Atlantic Canada. His book Endgame 1758,

Lennie Gallant is touring in celebration of the release of his new album entitled Live Acoustic at The Carleton. Just announced as a
nominee for the 2014 Canadian Folk Music Awards for both English Songwriter of the Year and Solo Artist of the Year on the strength of
his new recording, Lennie is also celebrating the launch of a new book entitled Peter’s Dream, which is a collaboration with visual artist
and sibling, Karen Gallant. All of this comes hot on the heels of his summer-long run at Charlottetown’s Mack Theatre with his show
Searching For Abegweit: The Island Songs and Stories of Lennie Gallant, a runaway hit that was extended to an incredible 57 sold out
shows.
Lennie Gallant’s new album contains 16 live tracks. It is a combination of brand new songs and fresh takes on familiar favourites from his
impressive back catalogue. New songs include Has Anybody Seen My Skates, God’s Reply, Amelia (inspired by Amelia Earhart, and cowritten with Liam Titcomb), and Abegweit, which was written for his hit show, in which he starred as part of this year’s Charlottetown
Summer Festival. The album also includes fan favourites such as Peter’s Dream, Mademoiselle, Laisse aller, and rockin’ versions of 47
Angels on Her Front Lawn, Tales of The Phantom Ship, and Tell Me A Ghost Story. Live Acoustic at The Carleton is Lennie’s tenth full length
recording and was captured over two nights in the intimate atmosphere of the award-winning songwriter music club, The Carleton, in
Halifax.
A recipient of the Order of Canada for his contributions to Canadian music culture, Lennie Gallant’s previously released body of work
includes nine albums, and has won him a host of awards and nominations from the Junos, ECMAs, and the Prix Eloizes. An international
touring artist who has represented Canada on song writing events in Nashville, London, and Texas; and who has entertained our troops in
Kandahar, performed at Canada Day events in Washington and London, and on the world stage at the XXI Winter Olympics, Lennie Gallant

20. New Exhibition My Favourite Things Begins at Gallery 78 Oct 24
My Favourite Things features five realist women artists. All five artists live or have roots in Atlantic Canada. Jessie Babin draws exquisitely
in graphite, charcoal and coloured pencil; Ann Balch’s paintings of faces in watercolour and oil are moving and introspective at the same
time; Joanne Hunt’s floral and still life compositions exemplify this artist’s eye for detail; Susan Paterson’s paintings in oil are classical
masterpieces; and Cathy Ross’s watercolour paintings uplift and engage the viewer.

ArtsLink NB is delighted to offer its members a series of workshops to provide them with the skills and resources they need to succeed.
Professional development is necessary for our artists and cultural workers to have long, creatively satisfying, and financially sustainable
careers in this province.
Writing for a Grant: John Murchie
November 19, 10am-4pm, at Connexion ARC, in Fredericton
Along with an overview of the typical components of grant applications, this workshop will focus on developing a project concept and
writing about it clearly and concisely. The session will focus on Canada Council for the Arts and artsnb. Learn how to write about yourself
and your art practice in a way that supports your proposal and discover what jurors look for when reviewing submissions. Participants are
asked to bring their partially-completed grant applications for feedback.
John Murchie is a visual artist and curator living and working in Sackville, NB. The former coordinator of Struts Gallery & Faucet Media
Arts Centre, he has served on numerous provincial and national juries.
All workshops are free to ArtsLink NB members, who are welcome to participate in as many of the workshops as they would like.
Non-member fees are $25 for half day sessions, and $50 for full day workshops.
Space is limited and registration is required. A $20 deposit is taken at registration to secure your spot, and will be reimbursed at the
workshop. Registration includes refreshments for half day sessions and lunch for full day sessions. Participants are responsible for their

Kimberly Arsenault, an accredited music therapist, will be running a series of 6 music therapy sessions for young children between the

1. Seeing Charlotte: A Short Film Contest looking for Story Lines about the History of the CSAC
The Charlotte Street Arts Centre, located at 732 Charlotte Street, is an historic Fredericton landmark. Built in 1884, the centre’s first
incarnation was as the Charlotte Street School, which boasts the title of being the oldest public school in Fredericton. In 2005, after a
number of years of abandonment, this historic gem was given a second life as an art centre.
Memories, history, architecture and art all connect in the storied past of this old building, and this rich past, present and future will be
celebrated during the Charlotte Street Arts Centre’s 10 Year Anniversary Celebration in 2015. As part of this celebration, the Charlotte
Street Arts Centre, in partnership with the NB Film Co-op, is hosting a contest looking for short film ideas about 732 Charlotte Street.
How would you make the Charlotte Street Arts Centre come to life on the big screen? What kind of craziness went on in this building
during its time as a school? How did its transformation from school to arts centre come to be? What lies ahead for Charlotte Street?
