EXPLORING WORLD WAR II BATTLEFIELDS

Author Don Lasseter is known for his many true crime books, but
also has been an active explorer of WWII history. In this interest, he
has traveled all over Europe and the South Pacific to locate sites of
famous battles. This includes visits to Normandy, Battle of the
Bulge, Berlin, Sicily, Anzio, and the South Pacific. In his talk,
“Exploring WWII Battlefields,” he will share the details of these wide
ranging quests. In addition, he will bring some artifacts he has
collected along the way. Reservations are required!

AARP TAX-AIDE VOLUNTEERS
AARP Tax-Aide volunteers provide free tax
preparation assistance every year at many
locations, including the Cypress Senior Center.
Tax-Aide volunteers work with taxpayers directly,
filling out tax returns and helping them seek a
refund. If you are interested in being a Tax-Aide
volunteer you should be familiar with the workings
of a laptop computer, have internet experience
and be available during daytime hours from
January through April. Volunteers must be able to
pass tax certification testing. Experience in tax
preparation (personal or professional) is
desirable, but not required. If you would like to
apply to be a Tax-Aide volunteer, go to the

SCAN will provide a Stroke Screening. According to
the National Stroke Association, stroke is the third
leading cause of death in Americans and the leading
cause of adult disability. A stroke occurs when an
artery or vessel is blocked which stops blood supply to
an area of the brain. The test to check your carotid
arteries involves the use of an ultrasound in order to
assess blood flow through the vessels. It is a quick,
painless, and non-invasive test. Free. First-come;
first-served for screening with limited availability.
Numbers will be given out starting at 8:45 am. On
board the SCAN Van you can play Wii bowling, utilize
the health knowledge resource library, and access 20
different computer based brain games!

Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not
produce or properly use insulin. Insulin is a
hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches,
and other food into energy. The glucose test is used
to evaluate blood sugar levels, which can indicate
your diabetes risk. Fasting (water only) provides a
more accurate reading. Supplies provided by
Walgreens in Cypress. Walk-in; first-come/firstserved. Limited availability.

attend this group to have an opportunity to safely
share your grief experiences.

includes discussion on the grief process, life after

TAXI VOUCHER PROGRAM
The Taxi Voucher Program is a curb-to-curb taxi
service provided by the City of Cypress for
qualifying Cypress seniors for medical and
medically- related appointments, grocery
shopping, banking, visiting the Cypress Senior
Center, visiting a relative in a hospital, etc. Each
qualified participant may receive up to six
vouchers per month.
Individuals must meet the following criteria:

tAge 60 or older
tIncome maximum per month of $2,712 for an
individual
To qualify, you must first register in person at the
Cypress Senior Center. You will need to bring
proof of Cypress residency, government issued
photo identification that shows your birth date,

ALZHEIMER’S CAREGIVER SUPPORT
Third Wednesday of Every Month
October 15th
1:30 - 3:00 pm and 7:00 - 8:30 pm
These support groups are free and open to
caregivers of individuals with Alzheimers and
related memory disorders. The groups provide a
safe environment where confidentiality of shared
information is respected. They offer support in
understanding, coping with, and managing
Alzheimer’s disease, as well as assistance in
locating and utilizing community resources.

Are you looking for a support group to help you
through a difficult time or issue? This group
provides individuals the opportunity to join together
with others to discuss and listen to various life
issues. Led by: R. Bush.
NUTRITION TRANSPORTATION
If you are 60 years or older, a Cypress resident,
and participate in the “Let’s Do Lunch” nutrition
program, there is transportation available to and
from the Cypress Senior Center. There is no
charge for the transportation, but you must
participate in the lunch program. Transportation
is by taxi and at fixed times for both pick-up and
return rides.

SPOTLIGHT ON INSTRUCTORS
Welcome to Brent Brayshaw, the
new instructor for Physical
Fitness on Monday mornings.
His class is offered through
North Orange County
Community College District’s
Older Adults Program
(NOCCCD-OAP).
Brent currently resides in Chino Hills, his home
town. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in
Kinesiology from California State University,
Fullerton. Kinesiology is the scientific study of
exercise and movement. He is enrolled in a
graduate program in Kinesiology at CSUF, and
plans to earn his PhD in that field, with the goal of
teaching at the college level.
Previously, Brent was the Assistant Activity
Director at Cambridge Court Assisted Living,
where he did everything from conducting classes
such as trivia, and exercise, planned socials and
outings, along with coordinating volunteers. He
also worked at the Outdoor Science School in
Forest Falls in the San Bernardino Mountains
Besides instructing for the school district, Brent
works as a physical therapy aide with Citrus Valley
Health Partners, and also teachers tai chi in Brea.
In his free time, Brent enjoys mountain climbing,
hiking, kung fu, and tai chi. Join him for Physical
Fitness on Mondays from 10:00 am - 12:00 pm. In
the class he incorporates resistance training, tai
chi, balance and mobility, plus stress
management. Register with the instructor your
first day of class.

LET’S DO LUNCH
Lunch at the Senior Center can be the highlight of
your day. Enjoy live music, play games with others
or watch movies after your meal. A delicious lunch
is served at 12:00 noon, Monday through Friday.
Adults 60 years and older are requested to make a
suggested donation of $3.00 for lunch. If you are
under 60 years of age, there is a charge of $5.00 per
meal. Check-in table opens at 10:15 am; lunch is
available on a first-come, first-served basis. Menu
is subject to change.
One billiard table is located in the Exercise Room
and is open for play Monday through Friday on the

EXERCISE EQUIPMENT
Exercise equipment is available for use at no
charge in the Exercise Equipment Room.
Available equipment includes: Treadmills, bikes,
and weight set. If you would like to use a treadmill,
please stop at the Reception Desk to complete the
required forms, and receive training on the
machine. Sign in and out at the Reception Desk
each time you use a treadmill. The time limit on a
treadmill is 30 minutes if there is someone waiting.

Knowledge of how to play is required. This free
group is on-going and meets on Tuesdays and

heavy ball? Play tennis without chasing the ball?
Experience the Wii interactive gaming system.
Open play for Wii games is every Friday from 1:00
