THE NEWSLETTER OF HOPE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH OCTOBER 2014 A Word from Pastor Jim Greetings in the Name of Christ! As I write this, I am very aware of the fact that I have only met a small handful of people at Hope United Methodist Church. But it is my hope that we will fast become good friends as I begin my tenure as your new pastor. Changes like these are often met with some fear and anxiety, but I want to reassure you that all will be well. In fact, the Lord has been reminding me of a verse over the last few months – even before I had any hint of a mid-year change of appointment. That verse was Jeremiah 29:11 which reads, “ ‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’ ” There are all kinds of messages in that for us as we move forward together. Consider first, that the name of our church is Hope! We know that the Lord has our best interests in His heart. Sometimes we run into speed bumps along the way; sometimes these trip us up or knock us down. It hurts. We may wonder what God is doing to us. We may lose heart for a moment, or even lose faith. But rest assured, God is at work! He has a plan for Hope UMC, just as He has a personal plan for each one of us. That plan is one that will not harm us, rather it is one that will prosper us. It is a plan that will give us hope and a future. The choice before us is whether we will follow and participate in the plan God has designed for us — as individuals and as the congregation of Hope UMC. Let us look ahead with joyous anticipation of the wonders that God has in store for us. Let us join together in prayer, and celebrate the love of Jesus Christ as we continue forward in our journey of faith together. I am eagerly looking forward to serving with you. I ask for your prayers and your patience as I transition in — you will certainly be in my prayers. In service to Christ, and with His love, Meet Pastor Jim! We will be holding a series of "c ot ta ge me et ings , " gi vin g everyone in the Hope family an opportunity to meet Pastor Jim in small group settings. Groups of no more than 12 people would be the ideal size for good interaction. Timing is flexible, but we would like to hold these meetings October 19th - November 16th. Are you willing to host a meeting? Have it at your home, or use a room at Hope for this event. If you are interested, please sign up on the sheet in the lobby, and we will schedule the gatherings. Wednesday, 22nd, 7pm – Akron Halloween Parade Wednesday, 29th, 6:30pm – Ephrata Jack Frost Parade From the website: When folks look around our churches these days, it’s pretty easy to see who’s missing: our young people. Raising up disciples of Jesus and strengthening our local churches is no easy task and the strategies for revival and renewal vary, but what’s undeniable is this: we’ve got to do a far better job making our congregations more attractive to (and relevant for) the Millennials and Generation X. Friday, 31st – Halloween (Trick-or-Treaters 6-8pm) [This] Planting Seeds for Ministry Growth event is designed for those churches which are somewhat missing the under-50 crowd, and almost entirely missing the under-35 crowd. The Holy Spirit was there, and still is, truly alive at Hope Church. As we have all pulled together to raise the funds needed for the roof and now with the transition of another Pastor, we have all rallied and worked together, as any family would do. Our church membership might be dwindling – but our Spirit is not. Many of us have been at Hope for many years and have seen many changes during the times. However, the love and caring for each other continues on. It was a touching morning as the choir was back, and then Kris Powers sang “He” for the Offering (a song that has touched my heart for many years). When I am at Hope, I am home. So many times I am touched by the generosity of Hope members...but why should that surprise me? We have always been a very generous congregation, sharing what we have with others and now sharing with each other to get the job done – no matter what that job may be. THANK YOU to each and every one of you for the support of all the roof “fun”draising during the past several months. As we continue to raise funds for the roof (we are not quite there yet), let’s also be mindful of the many possibilities available to us to reach out to others. I am excited to see what God has planned for Hope. We are all truly blessed to have each other. Many blessings to each of you, Peg Schannauer OUTREACH & COMMUNITY HELP Offering Envelopes – Donations to Missions go to international missions from October to December. Questions? Nowhere else can one find such beauty, peace and harmony. Sunsets, snowfalls, bird songs, and the smell of pine needles are enjoyable and restore our souls. And sunny days in October are wonderful times to be out to enjoy the many beauties of nature. No time of year is more bountiful with an abundance of seeds and berries that many kinds of wildlife eat throughout autumn and winter. No time is more bountiful with fruits and vegetables that we people consume. And no time is more attractive and inspiring with lingering flowers, cool, dry breezes, migrating birds, and brilliantly colored leaves we can enjoy. Follow us on facebook: Sensing the shorter periods of daylight and dropping average temperatures each succeeding day in fall, deciduous trees shut off water to their leaves, which allows them to die. As the leaves perish, their green chlorophyll fades and other colors that were in the leaves all summer are now visible, creating spectacular shows of warm colors. www.facebook.com/ hopeumcephrata This October, get out to experience more beauties of nature... they will be inspiring!
