THE GAME
Following a thrilling 33-32 victory over West Alabama, Florida Tech returns to Melbourne for a Gulf South Conference matchup with the No. 4 Lions of North Alabama
Saturday night at Pirate Stadium.
FIT boasts some impressive ranks among GSC teams this season. The Panthers
garner the second spot in the conference in total offense with 467.8 yards per game.
FIT’s passing attack also ranks second in the conference with an average of 291.0 yards.
The Panthers’ average of 36.5 points per contest is the third most among GSC members. Finally, the FIT defense ranks second in the conference in opponent fourth down
conversion percentage, holding opposing teams to 33.3 percent.
North Alabama comes into the game coming off a 27-6 win over UNC-Pembroke.
The Lions rank first in the GSC in scoring defense at 10.4 points per game, while garnering second in scoring offense with an average of 40.4 points a game. The UNA defense
is the GSC leader in rushing, passing and total defense on the season.
In last season’s game, the Lions defeated the upstart Panthers by a score of 55-28
at Pirate Stadium in Melbourne. FIT tallied more yards through the air and a greater
total offensive output in the game but the Lions were able to run roughshod over the
Panthers, racking up 298 rushing yards and seven touchdowns on the ground. UNA
also controlled the turnover battle, picking off Panther quarterbacks five times.
COACH ENGLEHART’S THOUGHTS
“North Alabama is a really great football team and they have been for a really long
time. Coach (Bobby) Wallace has come back for his second stint at North Alabama and
done a great job… They have great talent across the board and a defense that is probably as physical as we’re going to see all year… It’s going to be a great test but I think
our guys are going to be ready.”

THE CAPTAINS
Florida Tech will be represented this season by two returning captains
in Collin O’Neal and Ramsey Sellers. Chris Stapleton was selected a new captain by his teammates. The fourth captain will be announced Friday night.
PANTHERS BY THE NUMBERS
FIT has a number of players putting up big numbers this season. The
Panthers garner the Gulf South Conference’s leading rusher in Trevor Sand,
who has tallied 525 yards on the ground this season. The Seminole, Florida
native is also first in the conference in rushing scores with six. Xavier Milton
tops the GSC in receiving yards with 596, while Aaron George is currently
tied for the conference lead with seven touchdown catches. Quarterback
Mark Cato’s 1,552 passing yards rank second in the GSC. The redshirt freshman leads the Gulf South in passing touchdowns with 16.
On defense, linebacker Chris Stapleton tops the conference in tackles with 44. Despite missing the Panthers’ first two games, linebacker J.J.
Sanders is the GSC leader in tackles for loss with 8.5 and is also tied for the
conference lead with two forced fumbles. Cornerback Manny Abad has the
most pass breakups of any GSC defender with nine, while his mark of two
interceptions is tied for second in the conference.
CATO’S MANTLE GETTING CROWDED
For the fifth time this season, redshirt freshman quarterback Mark Cato
has been named the Gulf South Conference Freshman of the Week.
The Alachua, Florida native has received the award in all but one week
this season as Shorter’s Aaron Bryant was the recipient of the award a week
ago. In total, Cato has garnered six GSC weekly awards after being named
the Week One offensive player of the week.
The Panther signal caller registered 239 yards and two touchdowns on
20 of 43 passing in FIT’s 33-32 victory over West Alabama Saturday night,
while also tallying 11 rushes for 59 yards.
Dropped Out: Slippery Rock (19), West Georgia (21), Humboldt St. (24), Midwestern St. (25)
Where Cato really left his mark on the game, though, was on the
Panthers’ final drive. The former Gainesville High School star led FIT on a

Manny Abad has made a habit of leading Florida Tech’s football team
in community service hours in his first two years as a Panther. In July, he was
listed as a nominee for the 2014 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®, viewed
as one of the most coveted and prestigious off-the-field honors in college
football.
Abad, a redshirt sophomore defensive back, was the only nominee from
a Gulf South Conference school. He is among 92 nominees in the award’s
combined divisions category, which includes student-athletes from the Football Championship Subdivision, NCAA Division II, Division III and the NAIA.
He is also one of five nominees from a Florida school. The other
nominees from the Sunshine State include UCF’s Joey Grant, Florida’s Mark
Herndon, Miami’s Dallas Crawford and USF’s Thor Jozwiak.
An all-GSC second-team selection last season, Abad has volunteered
over 56 hours in the community in two years. Most of his time has been spent
as a mentor at nearby University Park Elementary School, helping children
with homework, reading and talking to them about the importance of education. Along with his teammates, he has also put on camps for children at The
Scott Center for Autism Treatment.
Abad was one of 20 Panthers named to the GSC Commissioner’s Honor
Roll in February. At the time, he held the second-highest grade point average
on the team. He enters his junior year academically this fall with a 3.79 GPA as
an accounting major.

WATCH THE PANTHERS LIVE
FLORIDA TECH’S RECORD WHEN...
FIT’s first appearance on ESPN3 and the WatchESPN app this season will be at home this Thursday, Oct. 2 as Delta State will travel to Palm Bay High School for the first time with kickoff scheduled
for 7 p.m. The Panthers’ game on Saturday, Nov. 8 at 2 p.m. at West Georgia will also be broadcasted.
The Panthers appeared on TV twice in their inaugural season last fall. They hosted West Alabama
in their first-ever Gulf South Conference game on CBS Sports Network and then played West Georgia
on Halloween as part of the GSC-TV package.
GSC SOLIDIFIES ESPN DEAL
The Gulf South Conference’s television package has a new home for 2014 after the league
officially announced an exclusive agreement with ESPN to broadcast its GSC-TV content.
The agreement marks the fourth consecutive year that the GSC and ESPN have collaborated to bring GSC-TV to fans around the globe, but this year the parties signed their first-ever
exclusive agreement. ESPN3 and live access on WatchESPN will host every contest with no
blackout restrictions.
STARTS AT THE TOP
Florida Tech President and Chief Executive Officer Anthony J. Catanese has successfully
started football at two NCAA schools, Division I Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton and FIT.
Catanese, now in his 12th year in Melbourne, has more than doubled the athletics landscape to 22 varsity sports since he arrived in 2002. He has added men’s and women’s golf, women’s soccer, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s swimming, men’s and
women’s track & field, football, and women’s lacrosse will officially begin play in spring 2015.
TO BE THE BEST, YOU HAVE TO PLAY THE BEST
The Gulf South Conference has produced 11 national championships in football. Three of
those titles have come in the last 10 years, including the 2012 NCAA Division II National Champion Valdosta State. The Blazers have won three national championships since 2004 and were
the runners-up in 2002.
North Alabama won the title three straight years from 1993-95 after finishing second in
1985. Delta State hoisted the trophy in 2000 and finished second in 2010.
HOME SWEET HOME
For the second year, FIT will play its home games at Palm Bay High School’s Pirate Stadium
in Melbourne. The 4,980-seat facility is comprised of synthetic turf. It features two press boxes,
one on the home side, or east stands, and a new box on the west side.
FOOTBALL FOUNDERS
