Mississippi College, transitioning to Division II and the GSC, does not qualify for conference rankings this season. That being said, the Choctaws average 149.7 yards a game rushing, while putting up just 43.2 yards per game passing. The MC defense has allowed an average of 259.7 yards a game to opposing rushing attacks, as well as 232.5 yards per contest through the air. Mississippi College comes in averaging just 15.7 points per game, while allowing an average of 41.3 points per game. COACH ENGLEHART’S THOUGHTS “Mississippi College has been Division III and now they’re coming back. Obviously the Gulf South Conference is very happy to have them back but they’re just getting used to getting back to Division II… it’s a matter of just getting used to the speed again. Defensively, it’s something we’ve seen before, it’s very similar to what West Georgia did last year. We’re going to have to be patient and drive the football. Offensively, they have a lot of formations, much like West Alabama. Our defense is going to have to be assignment sound and not give up the big plays.” 2014 SCHEDULE Date Sept. 6 Sept. 13 Sept. 20 Sept. 27 Oct. 2 Oct. 11 Oct. 18 Oct. 25 Nov. 1 ATHLETIC COMMUNICATIONS Nov. 8 Mitch Praxl* Assistant Athletic Communications Director Nov. 15 Ryan Jones FloridaTechSports.com (All times ET.) The Panthers garner the Gulf South Conference’s leading rusher in Trevor Sand, who has tallied 716 yards on the ground this season. Sand is also the only GSC player to average more than 100 yards a game rushing, coming in at 102.3. The Seminole, Florida native is tied for first in the conference in rushing scores with seven. Xavier Milton ranks second the GSC in receiving yards with 695, while Aaron George claims the second spot with seven touchdown catches. Quarterback Mark Cato’s 1,796 passing yards rank second in the GSC. The redshirt freshman leads the Gulf South in passing touchdowns with 18. Despite missing the Panthers’ first two games, linebacker J.J. Sanders is the GSC leader in tackles for loss with 12.0 and is also claims the conference lead with three forced fumbles. The Columbus, Ohio native also tops the GSC in tackles per game with 8.8 and is second in sacks per contest with .90. Cornerback Manny Abad has the most passes defensed of any GSC defender with nine. BYNUM NAMED FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK For the sixth time this season, a Panther has been named the Gulf South Conference Freshman of the Week. Redshirt freshman receiver Terrance Bynum earned the conference laurel following his Week Seven performance, adding to quarterback Mark Cato’s five freshman of the week awards. The Mount Dora, Florida native caught a career-best four passes, totaling 32 yards. Bynum also caught a 12-yard touchdown pass from Cato that tied the game at 24 apiece. Dropped Out: None Additionally, the freshman wide out caught a crucial fourth down pass Others Receiving Votes: West Georgia, 66; California (Pa.), 27; Indianapolis, 14; Central Missouri, 13; Humboldt St., on the final drive that gave the Panthers a first down. The Choctaws are not eligible for the GSC Title until their reclassifying period ends prior to the 2016-17 season. Mississippi College was a GSC member from 1972-96 before moving to DIII in 1997. In their first stint in the conference, the Choctaws claimed the GSC title three times, topping the conference in 1979, 1988 and 1990. SAND MAKING PRESENCE FELT One could easily argue that redshirt sophomore Trevor Sand has been the most impressive tailback in the GSC this season. The Seminole, Florida native leads the conference in both total yards and yards per game, recording marks of 716 and 102.3, respectively. Sand is also tied with North Alabama’s Lamnte Thompson for the conference lead with seven rushing touchdowns. Sand’s best performance may have come last week against UNA. The fullback went over and around the Lions, totaling 24 carries for 191 yards and a touchdown. SANDERS COMES UP BIG Florida Tech linebacker J.J. Sanders might just be the most disruptive force in the Gulf South Conference. The Columbus, Ohio native once again showed the type of impact he can have on a game last week against North Alabama. Not only did Sanders tie for the game-high in tackles with 12, nine of which were solo, but the former Kent State Golden Flash made a third of those stops behind the line of scrimmage. In fact, Sanders doubled his season total in sacks, bringing down quarterback Luke Wingo three times and forcing a fumble. That’s pretty much all in a days work for Sanders, who leads the GSC in tackles for loss, forced fumbles and tackles per game. /FloridaTechFootball @FLTechFootball @FloridaTechFootball PAGE 3 FLORIDA TECH FOOTBALL 2014 UNFORGETTABLE MEMORY Freshman kicker Josh Davidson became the first freshman from the 2014 recruiting class to play this season. A product of Jacksonville, Davidson made his debut at Bethune-Cookman. He kicked off six times for an average of 58.8 yards. The freshman followed up that performance with four kickoffs totaling 238 yards versus Delta State. Davidson’s average of 59.5 on kickoffs against DSU is the highest mark by a Panther this season. In total, the walk-on has recorded 16 kickoffs with an average distance of 50.5 yards. In July, he was listed as a nominee for the 2014 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®, viewed as one of the most coveted and prestigious off-the-field honors in college football. Abad, a redshirt sophomore defensive back, was the only nominee from a Gulf South Conference school. He is among 92 nominees in the award’s combined divisions category, which includes student-athletes from the Football Championship Subdivision, NCAA Division II, Division III and the NAIA. He is also one of five nominees from a Florida school. The other nominees from the Sunshine State include UCF’s Joey Grant, Florida’s Mark Herndon, Miami’s Dallas Crawford and USF’s Thor Jozwiak. An all-GSC second-team selection last season, Abad has volunteered over 56 hours in the community in two years. Most of his time has been spent as a mentor at nearby University Park Elementary School, helping children with homework, reading and talking to them about the importance of education. Along with his teammates, he has also put on camps for children at The Scott Center for Autism Treatment. Abad was one of 20 Panthers named to the GSC Commissioner’s Honor Roll in February. At the time, he held the second-highest grade point average on the team. He enters his junior year academically this fall with a 3.79 GPA as an accounting major. STEVE ENGLEHART SHOW DEBUTS The Steve Englehart Show, hosted by FLORIDA TODAY Sports Editor Mike Parsons and Sports Columnist John Torres, debuted on Tuesday, Sept. 2 at FloridaToday.com. This week’s edition, featuring offensive coordinator Jayson “Hulk Smash” Martin, provided a recap of the Panthers’ Week Seven loss to North Alabama and a preview of Saturday’s Homecoming Game with the Choctaws of Mississippi College. /FloridaTechFootball @FLTechFootball @FloridaTechFootball PAGE 5 FLORIDA TECH FOOTBALL 2014 WATCH THE PANTHERS LIVE FLORIDA TECH’S RECORD WHEN... FIT’s first appearance on ESPN3 and the WatchESPN app this season will be at home this Thursday, Oct. 2 as Delta State will travel to Palm Bay High School for the first time with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m. The Panthers’ game on Saturday, Nov. 8 at 2 p.m. at West Georgia will also be broadcasted. The Panthers appeared on TV twice in their inaugural season last fall. They hosted West Alabama in their first-ever Gulf South Conference game on CBS Sports Network and then played West Georgia on Halloween as part of the GSC-TV package. GSC SOLIDIFIES ESPN DEAL The Gulf South Conference’s television package has a new home for 2014 after the league officially announced an exclusive agreement with ESPN to broadcast its GSC-TV content. The agreement marks the fourth consecutive year that the GSC and ESPN have collaborated to bring GSC-TV to fans around the globe, but this year the parties signed their first-ever exclusive agreement. ESPN3 and live access on WatchESPN will host every contest with no blackout restrictions. STARTS AT THE TOP Florida Tech President and Chief Executive Officer Anthony J. Catanese has successfully started football at two NCAA schools, Division I Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton and FIT. Catanese, now in his 12th year in Melbourne, has more than doubled the athletics landscape to 22 varsity sports since he arrived in 2002. He has added men’s and women’s golf, women’s soccer, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s swimming, men’s and women’s track & field, football, and women’s lacrosse will officially begin play in spring 2015. TO BE THE BEST, YOU HAVE TO PLAY THE BEST The Gulf South Conference has produced 11 national championships in football. Three of those titles have come in the last 10 years, including the 2012 NCAA Division II National Champion Valdosta State. The Blazers have won three national championships since 2004 and were the runners-up in 2002. North Alabama won the title three straight years from 1993-95 after finishing second in 1985. Delta State hoisted the trophy in 2000 and finished second in 2010. HOME SWEET HOME For the second year, FIT will play its home games at Palm Bay High School’s Pirate Stadium in Melbourne. The 4,980-seat facility is comprised of synthetic turf. It features two press boxes, one on the home side, or east stands, and a new box on the west side.
