Port Washington Calendar October 2014 5 Potpourri Well, here we are embarking on the final quarter of 2014… went by in a hurry didn’t it? We had a number of ideas while thinking about this month’s column. So, if I bounce around a bit, please forgive me. This time of year our thoughts run from International considerations all the way down to incidental items that would make our collective lives a bit better. The international arena is frightening and we do not hear or see anyone with a clear vision on what to do next. Whether Hong Kong, the Middle East, Africa or our own border with Mexico, we seem stuck with a polarization of opinions. This is true at the highest levels of government all the way down (or up, depending on your view) to local conversations in the coffee shops. Our own government epitomizes this polarization and I’ll bet more than a few of us long for a few statesmen like Tip O’Neill or Ed Derwinski to show up and bring Congress, and us, together. For those who do not know these names, opening a History book might help, but that is another topic. From a less lofty perch there are a number of issues facing us right here on this magnificent peninsula. The two that are affecting everything in Port are Parking and Traffic. Here again, we seem to have polarization, or worse… simply a philosophy of benign neglect. Parking is more and more difficult and the fines get larger and larger… who says the politicos are without logic? Manorhaven Elementary School Celebrates 60 Years! Manorhaven Elementary School will be be celebrating their 60th Anniversary with a carnival on Sat. October 18 from 10 am - 2 pm at the school. We see two actions that might just help. First, can we have police direct traffic around the train station and at Main and Port Boulevard during the morning and afternoon hours? The crossing guards work hard to keep everyone safe but their authority is limited. Second, how about a little courtesy and civility? Let someone in from a side street, avoid ‘blocking the box’, and please, no more ‘flipping the bird’ at the crossing guards. Oh, and do not forget to vote November 4.
