October starts with the excitement of the Maui County Fair - The Cotton Candy, Chicken Hekka and my favorite scary ride - The Zipper. When I was a kid we had a ride called the Bullet that was like a round washtub on a thirty foot high stick. It felt and sounded like it was about to fly into a million pieces, and it smelled like lots of kids had been sick in it. What fun! My first job was at our county fair. I was 12 years old and my father, who ran a food booth for the Lutheran Brotherhood at the fair, had arranged a job for me. I didn’t know what the details were, just to meet one of his buddies at the fairgrounds at 6AM. I woke up before dawn, put on my best white Sunday school shirt, black dress pants, and clipon tie. I started the two mile bike ride on my shiny red Schwinn bike in the dark. I rode about half way there when an early rising bird took a poop….and it landed on the arm of my clean white shirt. I knew my mother would be ashamed if I went to work that way so I rushed home, changed shirts, and rode like the devil to get to the fairgrounds by 6AM ….where I was taken to the cow barn and given a pitch fork to clean up from behind the prize cows…….my white shirt didn’t stay white for long! I still like to visit the animal barn at the county fair; I just avoid the back side of the cows. In Hawaii it is also the time for the whales to arrive. I heard on the radio that they already spotted the first one off Lahaina! Editor: Diane Alba-Means Marketing Director October 13th is what we used to call Christopher Columbus Day, but now it is called Discoverer's day. I propose we stop celebrating who discovered “us” and celebrate what we have discovered. Why isn’t there a Neil Armstrong Day? After all, he was an American and he was the first person on the Moon! Armstrong's famous words "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." This Halloween I’m dressing up as an Astronaut, instead of my usual Cowboy costume.
