SPRING CAMP KANDU
2014
What a beautiful Saturday we had during our spring session of Camp Kandu! It was a weekend full of laughter, new friendships, and a whole lot of fun! Campers enjoyed arts and crafts,
learning new karate moves, and loved having time to canoe and explore Hammock Island! Parents had a chance to meet and spend time with other parents who have children with diabetes.
Parents attended seminars taught by Joe Solowiejczyk, RN, MSW, CDE; Della Matheson, RN
CDE and Autumn Douglas, RD, CDE. The subjects of these seminars included topics on family life, carbohydrate counting, new research outcomes, and adjusting insulin to carbohydrate
ratios.
One of our favorite things about camp is watching campers establish friendships and
watching those friendships grow throughout the years. We understand that living with diabetes
is not always a walk in park, and we recognize the importance of cultivating and creating lasting
friendships and a strong support group. It is always a joy to watch our Kandu kids connect with
children who are just like them and who share the same Kandu spirit!

20TH ANNUAL MISSISSIPPI’S
WALK FOR DIABETES: TEAM UP
TO TACKLE DIABETES
Lace up your tennis shoes and get ready to walk!
This year we are excited to celebrate our 20th annual
Mississippi’s Walk for Diabetes. Our themes is “Team
up and Tackle Diabetes”; join us by wearing your favorite team’s colors at the startling line! Start recruiting your team members today, set personal goals,
and collect donations now! There are many ways to
participate and there is something for everyone!
We are pleased to announce that the First Lady
of Mississippi , Deborah Bryant, will be serving as
this year’s honorary statewide walk chair. Larry Favreau CEO, EVP, Southern Farm Bureau Life Insurance Company will be serving as honorary chairman
for our Mississippi’s Walk for Diabetes Jackson.
Mississippi’s Walk for Diabetes funds our programs all year round. These seven walks have made
our educational program, Sweet Subject, possible!
In the past two years over 2,000 teachers and students have participated in this program!
We need team captains who will inspire and
bring enthusiasm to their team members as they
work together to raise money for the DFM! Walkers have an opportunity to participate as individuals. Walk participants can set a personal fundraising goal and can receive incentives as they raise
more and more money! Corporate sponsors are
needed to sponsor starting lines, finish lines, mile
makers, our t-shirt, and rest stops. Volunteers are
always welcomed and needed! If you are interested
in participating in this year’s walk, contact us at
601-957-7878, we look forward to having you!

EAGLE SCRAMBLE
The weather is warm and the sun is out! It’s time to hit the driving range to loosen
up your golf swing and join us for our upcoming golf tournaments. May 12th was a
beautiful day for a round of golf at Canebrake Country Club of Hattiesburg as golfers
competed in an effort to raise awareness and money for diabetes! Golfers competed in
a 4 man scramble, were entered to win fabulous door prizes, and competed for longest
drive and closest to the pin! The winners of this year’s Eagle Scramble were Chris Pierce,
Jason May, Raymond Keith, and Wade Rushing of Advantage Pharmacy! Following
just two strokes behind were the men from AT&T Crowell Armstrong, Brett Bukvich,
Randy Russell, and Ryan Bukvich. Southern Pine EPA followed closely in third place.
Special thanks to Canebrake Country Club and to Tom King, Southern District Transportation Commissioner, for helping make this year’s tournament such a success!
Commissioner Tom King & Hailey Grace Hollingsworth
Reserve your team today for our DFM Invitation at Annandale Country club on
September 8, 2014!
PORTION DISTORTION
Ever wonder if the drive through burger you’re eating has always been that size? Recent studies show that over the past 20
years American’s food proportions have increased, significantly! We could easily be adding 50 to 150 calories a meal if we aren’t
careful, which quickly adds up! Portion control is important for managing a healthy weight and preventing overeating, but it
is also important for those managing diabetes. Knowing correct portion sizes will help to keep carbohydrate to insulin ratios
accurate. There are simple tools available to help determine correct portion sizes. Here are a few helpful tips:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
A serving of lean beef or poultry should be equal in size to a deck of cards.
A serving of fish should be the size of a checkbook.
A white potato should be equivalent to the size of a computer mouse
A serving of Peanut butter should be the size of a golf ball
One serving of Pasta should equal the size an ice cream scoop
Salad dressing, equivalent to 1 shot
One pancake needs to be the size of a DVD
One serving of butter equal to one postage stamp

THE ULTIMATE
FASHION SHOW
On April 17, 20914, the DFM hosted the 11th annual Ultimate Fashion Show and Champagne Brunch! This
year we honored the First Lady of Mississippi, Deborah Bryant, for her outstanding service and commitment to our
state. Everyone had a wonderful time as our Kandu kids and volunteer models hit the runway wearing the season’s
latest trends! The Ultimate Fashion Show was chaired by Marcie Robertson along with Artistic Director Trish Windham. All proceeds from this event benefit Camp Kandu for kids, the DFM camp for children with diabetes and
their families. Camp Kandu provides hope, friendships and education to families of children who have diabetes.
Not only did we get a sneak peek at this season’s hottest trends, we also
had the excitement of giving away for the 27th year a Patty Peck Honda!
We appreciate her gracious donations for these many years! This year’s winner of the 2013 Honda Fit Sport was Wendy Steed of Madison. Thanks to
all who helped to make this event such a success.

SUMMER TIPS
We all know Mississippi summers are hot
and humid, and it’s important to be prepared!
Here are a few summer time tips to help manage
diabetes during the heat of the summer months.
Before you hit the beach, leave town for a
weekend getaway, or are just simply enjoying life
outside during the summer months, take these
tips into consideration:
• Stay Hydrated! Water is imperative for avoiding dehydration. Make sure you are drinking
a lot of water and that you always have access
to water, especially if you are spending extra
time in the sun or being physically active.
Dehydration can lead to a rise in blood
glucose levels and can be a result of poor
diabetes management. Drink water and limit
your intake of caffeine and sugary drinks!
• Keep your supplies cool! Heat, humidity, and
direct sunlight can affect the accuracy of your
blood glucose testing supplies (meter and
strips) as well as the potency of insulin. Make
sure to keep supplies at room temperature
and insulin in a cooler or refrigerator. You
don’t want to lose valuable medical supplies
due to carelessness!
• Pack plenty! Make sure when you’re packing
for an afternoon at the pool, a weekend getaway, or a weeklong vacation, you are packing extra testing supplies, snacks, and insulin.
You never know what you may run into,
and it’s always best to be overly prepared as
opposed to under prepared!
