New this year are focused practice and education sessions including: Emerging Technology, Research Oncology, Advanced Practice Oncology, Scope of Genomic Practice, Culture and Genetic Testing, Case Studies and Genetic Literacy. In addition there is a new opportunity to participate in the Interactive Posters. Attendees will contribute to strategic thinking by posting individual comments and answers to genomic-related questions and then watch as a poster develops throughout the Congress. A summary of the final poster content, comments, and ideas will be revealed and discussed during a plenary session on Sunday morning. The 2014 World Congress will help attendees to: 1. Present and discuss research, education and clinical topics that promote the knowledge and scientific foundation for nursing genetic/genomic practice and scholarship. 2. Highlight recent genetic scientific advances globally and the implications for nursing research and practice. 3. Provide a forum for nurses and other healthcare providers globally to interact, network, share experiences and discuss the state of the science related to nursing and genetics/genomics. 4. Identify genetic discoveries that influence the biology of health and disease. 5. Provide a forum for debate on the application and use of genomic technologies and information and the implications for health and wellbeing of communities, cultures and populations, from societal and ethical perspectives. Presentations will include: An update of the work ISONG has been doing with the ANA to update our scope and standards, the scope of genomics/genetics nursing in the context of the overall focus in the US on working at the top of our licensure, and Current healthcare reform and an international perspective detailing the current trends in the UK and Europe on the provision of genetic counseling services. At the conclusion of the presentations there will be an opportunity for questions and discussions. We want to encourage a lively discussion after the presentations. Please bring your questions! Abstract Sessions The 2014 Abstract Sessions reflect a focus on the titles as listed and offer current and late breaking information in Genetics/Genomics. There were over 70 abstracts submitted. Those that were accepted for podium presentations will be presented throughout the congress. Those that were accepted for poster presentation will be displayed and highlighted during the Poster Session and Reception on Saturday evening. Focused Session: Case Studies to Enhance Education This session is targeted to nurse educators and clinicians who provide health education to individual patients and populations. It provides the attendee real world examples of the use of case studies in education of nursing students across the educational spectrum. International faculty will present case studies they have used in nursing education with a focus on single gene disorders, cardiovascular health, neurologic health and pharmacogenomics across the curriculum. The attendee will gain knowledge about important components of case studies, ways to incorporate them into learning experiences, and strengths and weaknesses of their use. Focused Session: Research Oncology: The Science of Symptoms The Science of Symptoms is a two hour symposium presented by nurse researchers who are studying the association of genetic predictors and symptoms experienced by patients who are cancer survivors. Participants who attend this session will understand our current knowledge of the genomic risk factors of some of the more frequently occurring symptoms including pain, nausea, vomiting, depression, quality of life and cognitive function. In addition, we will discuss the science of symptoms research from a funding perspective. This symposium has been primarily designed for nurses who work with or study patients with cancer, but nurses from all areas will be fascinated to learn about potential genetic links to these symptoms that may occur in any patient population. Focused Session: Culture and Genetic Testing This session will provide a global perspective and discuss minority attitudes toward genetic testing. Focused Session: Advance Practice Oncology This session will be held during one of the concurrent sessions on Saturday afternoon and will focus on Advanced Practice Oncology. Focused Session: Emerging Technology This session will be held during one of the concurrent sessions on Saturday afternoon and will focus on Emerging Technology and Next Generation Sequencing will be highlighted. 4 2014 ISONG World Congress on Nursing and Genomics November 7-9, 2014 Scottsdale, Arizona USA ISONG Research Awards Continuing Education Credits Fostering scientific research in genetics is an important part of ISONG’s mission. In 2014, ISONG embarked on a Nursing Research Directed Donations Campaign. With the generous support from ISONG members who donated to support their fellow members, ISONG, as an organization, will be able to fund a grant for early career researchers in addition to the other grants available. The Research Grant applications are available to ISONG members. All grant submissions undergo rigorous peer review by a committee of Research Committee members. Each award is $2,500. Grant information and an application form can be found at http://www.isong.org/ISONG_research_grant_program.php. This learning activity will be developed in collaboration with the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing. The University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing, is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
