October 19, 2014 — Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time 4 This Week in our Parish Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Today we join Catholics around the world in celebrating World Mission Sunday. Our second collection today will go to help support the efforts of Catholic missionaries around the globe. How appropriate that this week we are marking the 150th anniversary of the arrival of two German Catholic missionaries in Leavenworth and their establishment of the Carmelite Order in the New World. It was really not that long ago that Kansas was truly “mission territory.” It was to the Kansas frontier that Fathers Cyril Knoll and Xavier Huber came by stagecoach across Illinois and northern Missouri to avoid raging Civil War battles in the State of Missouri. These German missionaries were met by the French Jesuit missionary, Bishop John Baptist Miege, SJ, who gave the Carmelites the administration of St. Joseph Church. This foundation was to be Carmel’s first permanent parish in America. Ninety-four Carmelites from around the world-- Italy, Germany, Canada, Mexico, Peru and the United States will be arriving in Leavenworth this Wednesday to participate in our Carmel 150 Symposium, entitled “Carmel’s Journey to the Frontiers.” Carmelite students studying in the US from Vietnam, Indonesia, Mexico, Guatemala, Britain and Germany will be joining them here. The Symposium begins at 8:30 AM this Thursday, October 23, at the Leavenworth Landing Riverfront Park. A stone marker will be blessed and the Mayor of Leavenworth, Mark Presinger, will read an official proclamation. The marker includes an abbreviated quote from Fr. Cyril Knoll: “This shall be the birthplace and the cradle of our Order in America.” After the dedication ceremony, the visiting Carmelites will be following an authentic Wells Fargo stagecoach carrying our Carmelite Prior General, Fr. Fernando Millan, as well as visiting German Carmelites, Bro. Guenter Benker, and Fr. Tobias Kraus. Part parade and part procession, the Carmelites will proceed up Esplanade and eventually to Immaculate Conception Church, where they will be greeted by the successor of Bishop Miege, Archbishop Joseph Naumann, who will preside at the opening Mass. The Carmel 150 Symposium will include a historical reflection by myself on Thursday morning, entitled “Carmel’s Frontier Experience”, a lecture Thursday evening on St. Therese of Lisieux by Brother Joseph Schmidt, FSC, a panel discussion in Scipio on Friday morning with Frs. Fernando Millan and Joseph Chalmers, a concert by Chanticleer on Friday evening, and a concluding presentation on Saturday morning by Catholic journalist, John Allen, Jr. of the Boston Globe. We invite all of our parishioners to join us for our closing Mass at St. Joseph Church at 11:30 AM this Saturday. Don’t let this once in a lifetime celebration pass you by. Plan to come to some part of it! See you at the Symposium. God bless you always! Fr. David Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time World Mission Sunday A Special Second Collection this weekend for World Mission Sunday serves to remind us of our part in the worldwide mission of Jesus.
