In each Eucharist we once again reenter into the one sacrifice of Christ for us on the Cross and thus celebrate it as the wedding feast of the Lord in which heaven and earth, humanity and divinity are united in the person of Jesus and then received by his followers. And this wedding feast liturgy is but a foretaste of the eternal liturgy of heaven. It is an awesome privilege to be invited to such a great occasion but also a great responsibility. As we see in this week’s parable, there are two grave dangers when considering this invitation. The first grave danger is to reject the invitation. The people in today’s parable were all doing good things: there is nothing wrong with tending a farm or building a business. The problem comes when we refuse to see the good things in our lives not as ends in themselves but as gifts of God that are meant to bring us closer to God. When that happens, we become like the people in the parable who attack the messengers sent by the king. We also will attack the prophets in our midst, or attack our own consciences, when we attempt to live our lives outside of God’s great purposes for us. The second grave danger we face is symbolized at the end of the parable when the king notices someone who, though he has said yes to the invitation to the banquet, is inappropriately attired since he does not have on his wedding garment. Just as being properly attired at a solemn event shows our respect and acceptance, so in this parable the wedding garment symbolizes that we not only have accepted God’s reign in our lives with our lips but also by sincere repentance leading to conversion in life. In the Baptismal liturgy of the Church the priest or deacon points to the white garment and admonishes the newly baptized “you have become a new creation, and have clothed yourself in Christ. See in this white garment the outward sign of your Christian dignity…bring that dignity unstained into the everlasting life of heaven.” So this would be a good time for us all to reflect on our own baptismal life in Christ: how is our ‘wedding garment’ holding up? TWENTY-EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME PRAYING THE ROSARY One traditional and beautiful form of Catholic prayer is the Rosary, during which we reflect on the central mysteries of our faith while entrusting our petitions to God through the intercession of Mary. At Immaculate Conception, there are three opportunities each week to pray the Rosary with others: Fridays after Noon Mass and Stations; Sundays at 9:00 a.m.; and, Sundays at 7:00 p.m. as part of evening Adoration and Benediction, prior to the 7:30 p.m. Mass. The garage is open to parishioners on Sunday mornings beginning around 7 o’clock, and then again beginning around 6 p.m. To get the reduced rate, you must use a magnetic voucher card available for purchase in the parish office, Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. To take advantage of the reduced rate, enter the garage from O’Keefe, and take a ticket from the auto attendant.
