This signifies another major step in a candidate’s journey of preparation to be ordained as a permanent deacon. God willing, Pat will be ordained on June 6, 2015. The acolyte is instituted for service at the altar and to assist the Priest and Deacon. It is his place principally to prepare the altar and the sacred vessels and, if necessary, to distribute the Eucharist to the faithful as an extraordinary minister. Please support Patrick with your prayers and encouragement as he continues his studies and training. PETER THE APOSTLE CHURCH October 19, 2014 Respect for Life “Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s and to God the things that are God’s.” Matthew 22:21 Everything we are and everything we have belongs to God. We aren’t “owners” of anything, we are merely “stewards” of the gifts God has given each of us. All God is asking is that we give back a portion of what He gave us. This is the essence of Stewardship. God should be our first priority in everything. All else comes second. 2014 BISHOP’S ANNUAL APPEAL “Lay people are not merely the clergy’s collaborators, but rather share in the responsibility of the Church’s ministry,” said Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI. Through the building of awareness and collaborative relationships, the Office of Parish Leadership Formation exists to recognize, support and resource the gifts of committed lay persons as well as to educate, form and empower them to respond to various needs in the contemporary Church. Your gift to the Bishop’s Annual Appeal helps build strong parishes by supporting this vital ministry. BISHOP’S ANNUAL APPEAL & PARISH CAPITAL CAMPAIGN Soon you will be hearing messages and receiving information about the Bishop’s Annual Appeal AND our own parish capital campaign called Step Forward with Christ. Since the timing of both overlap I wanted to prepare you. 1. The Bishop’s Appeal: Yearly I encourage every family to support the Bishop’s Annual Appeal. The parish will continue to support it this year since we are part of the Diocese of Metuchen, which provides many ministries and services that benefit our own community. 2. Our parish capital campaign, called Step Forward With Christ: Soon I will be asking every parishioner to consider support of the parish in a unique way. We received approval from the Bishop to conduct this campaign for renovations but it is also diocesan policy that parishes must guarantee their Bishop’s Appeal goal during the first year of their capital campaign. Whether or not you give to the Bishop’s Appeal, our parish is responsible for a contribution of $41,500 to the efforts of the Diocese. This year any shortfall in donations to the Bishop’s Appeal will have to be made up from the proceeds of the capital campaign, thereby reducing the amount we would have available for our capital projects. As you receive information about these efforts, I ask you to read the materials carefully and prayerfully consider a sacrificial contribution. No matter what, your generosity will be a help to both our parish and to our Diocese. Yearlong Preparation For WORLD MEETING OF FAMILIES Philadelphia, September 22-27, 2015 October — Because the Lord is the God of our ancestors, we want to strengthen the relationships between our family’s generations. For the Christian community the family is far more than a “theme”: it is life, it is the daily fabric of life, it is the journey of generations who pass on the faith together with love and with the basic moral values. It is concrete solidarity, effort, patience, and also a project, hope, a future. All this which the Christian community lives out in the light of faith, hope and charity, should never be kept to oneself but must become, every day, the leaven in the dough of the whole of society for its greater common good. Hope and a future presuppose memory. The memory of our elderly people sustains us as we journey on. The future of society … is rooted in the elderly and in the young: the latter, because they have the strength and are of the age to carry history ahead; the former, because they are a living memory. A people that does not take care of its elderly, its children and its youth has no future, because it abuses both memory and promise. Pope Francis Message to Participants in the 47th Social Week of Italian Catholics A Family Prayer Heavenly Father, thank you for the gift of our family. Enlighten our hearts and minds that we may live more fully this vocation of love. In our daily life and work, may we reflect the self-giving love which you, O Father, eternally show with your Son and the Holy Spirit. Let your love be evident in the peace that reigns in our home and in the faith we profess and live. May our family always be a place of generosity, understanding, forgiveness and joy. Kindly give us the wisdom and courage to be witnesses to your eternal design for the family; and grant that the Holy Family of Nazareth may always guide our path to holiness as a family. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever. Amen. Page 5 Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time St. Peter’s is alive with opportunities to continue the process of learning and being renewed in your faith, deepening your relationship with the Lord and your parish community, and discovering the joy of discipleship. October 19, 2014 Fruits of the Holy Spirit The Fruits of the Holy Spirit are perfections that the Holy Spirit forms in us as the first fruits of eternal glory. The tradition of the Church lists twelve of them: "charity, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, generosity, gentleness, faithfulness, modesty, self-control and chastity. (CCC 1832) During the next year, our Whole Community Catechesis, Youth Group, Children's RCIA, Parish Pastoral Council, Finance Council and Parish Commissions will explore these fruits at their sessions and pray that each of us use them in our day to day encounters with all those we meet. We invite all members of our parish to pray with us each month. During the month of October, we will pray for goodness and generosity. We also remember that God is never outdone in His goodness and generosity to us. What we give to the Lord is always given back to us in more ways than we can count or imagine. I"ndeed, goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life; I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever."Psalm 23:6 Goodness is holiness put into practice and results from knowing God. All goodness comes directly from God. Generosity is the ability to give of ourselves to all of our brothers and sisters, but especially those who are in need. When we extend ourselves to the needs of others, we are imitating the goodness and generosity of Jesus. We cannot only be good and generous to our friends or those who like us. We must extend ourselves also to our enemies. This is how Jesus explained it to us: “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your heavenly Father, for he makes his sun rise on the bad and the good, and causes rain to fall on the just and the unjust. For if you love those who love you, what recompense will you have? Do not the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet your brothers only, what is unusual about that? Do not the pagans do the same? So be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect.” Matthew 5: 43-48 St. Peter the Apostle Parish Catholic Cemetery Since 1862 NEW QUEEN OF A POSTLES MAUSOLEUM In-Ground Burial Plots; Mausoleum Crypts And Niches Located at 500 Somerset Street, New Brunswick NJ 732-249-0894 Page 6 ST. The proceeds of our new annual parish fundraiser (Tricky Tray and Raffle) serve as a supplement to our regular ordinary income and helps to fill any gaps in our parish budget. It is for ordinary expenses associated with parish life, ministries and operaons. This annual fundraiser began two years ago for several reasons. Previously some of the parish ministries were opera ng with out-of-pocket funds from individual parishioners involved in the ministry. Those ministry groups were also trying to conduct their own fundraisers. At the same me, the ministry was not included in the parish budget; there was no record of what that ministry required for operaon. Parish ministries ought to be supported by the whole parish, not just be dependent upon the charity of individual ministry volunteers. Parish ministries ought to be reflected in the parish budget and their opera on be in be er conformity with standard accoun ng prac ces. Knowing that the parish some mes struggles to match ordinary income with ordinary expense, and now having all ministries reflected in the budget plan, one single large parish fundraiser is conducted to help us balance the parish budget, thereby elimina ng frequent and small fundraisers. This approach also improves stewardship by requiring those responsible in leadership of parish life, ministries and opera on to think, plan and budget with accountability. Thank you to all who regularly and generously support St. Peter’s parish! Our annual parish fundraiser this coming year is on Sunday, November 9th at 1:00 pm. Help spread the word and invite rela ves and friends to a fun and exci ng a ernoon. If you need more informa on, contact Anne-Marie Calderone at 732-545-6820 ext. 15 or [email protected] What is Stewardship? Stewardship is a way of life, honoring God in everything we do with all His giŌs. Living life God-centered rather than self-centered, thinking of Him first before our own wants.
