Almade Today the third Extraordinary Synod of Bishops ended in Rome. Over 200 bishops from around the world (with 14 appointed married couples as participant observers) discussed the topic of marriage and family life for the past two weeks. Their deliberations will form the basis of next year’s 14th General Synod of Bishops, on the same topic. I thought, in light of the discussions going on in Rome, that it would be helpful to review Catholic teaching on marriage and family life. Marriage is one of the vocations of the Christian. In past centuries “vocation” may have only referred to God’s call to the priesthood. But since the Second Vatican Council (1962-65) vocation applies to all the pathways to holiness: ordained ministry as a priest or deacon; membership in a religious community; the single life (either as a never-married or a widow); and the married life. In the Catholic Church marriage is a sacrament. It is one of the seven special signs of God’s presence in the world. In the sacrament of marriage one man and one woman come together, as adults, who love each other, and pledge to continue loving each other faithfully, exclusively, and fruitfully, until death, with the help of prayer and the church. Statistics show that over 95% of the general The Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time population marries, so marriage is a common way people experience God’s love. Unfortunately not all marriages are loving. Through circumstances and human sinfulness, many marriages end and break up, perhaps as many as 40-50%. Here we confront a widespread misunderstanding: Those Catholics who separate, or civilly divorce, are not excommunicated from the church. They remain Catholics in good standing, called like every member of the Church to love God and neighbor, follow the teachings of the church, and try to live holy and just lives. They may receive Holy Communion, as long as they are in a state of grace (which is true for every Catholic). The problem comes when a divorced person remarries. Here again, those Catholics who are divorced-and -civilly-remarried are not excommunicated. They remain members of the church, called to attend Mass on Sundays and live holy lives. However, because of their irregular situation, they are not able to receive Holy Communion at Mass. A few bishops in the Synod have called for a change in this pastoral practice. No decisions have been made by Pope Francis. For both divorced persons, and divorced-and-remarried persons, the church offers the annulment process. This is a judicial act which declares that what to our eyes seemed like a valid sacrament, really was not. I urge folks who are divorced, or divorcedand-remarried, to pursue an annulment. Talk to one of us priests, or call the Marriage Tribunal office (412-456-3033) and ask for a preliminary questionnaire. We priests are happy to work as an advocate with anyone in seeking an annulment. If money is an obstacle to pursuing an annulment, the parish can provide the funds. (The current diocesan fee is $600, which is less than 20% of the total administrative cost of an annulment.) Two other issues. One is with the word “marriage.” Over the past five years, more than half of the states in our country (including Pennsylvania) have moved to change the definition of marriage to include two men or two women. This is in conflict with the Catholic Church’s 2000 year tradition. One thought is that we Catholics should use the old-time word “matrimony” to mean the Sacrament of Marriage between one man and one woman, and leave the word “marriage” for the civil courts and their expanded definition. The other is that God loves everyone. I can’t say this loud enough or often enough. No matter what vocation you feel called by God to pursue, or whether your marital situation is regular or not, God loves you. And the church needs to treat everyone with the same love and compassion. Families come in all sizes and conditions, and every family is called to the best of its ability to imitate the love of God in their relationships. There is much more that can and should be said about marriage and family life. You can read in depth in paragraphs 1601-1666 and 23312400 in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, or chapters 16 and 30 in the U.S. Catholic Catechism for Adults. May we pray fervently and lovingly for all the married, single, divorced, and divorced-and-remarried people in our community.
