Immaculate Conception Church
Douglassville, PA 19518
October 2014
Dear Parishioners:
In accord with an ancient tradition, The Catechism of the Catholic Church is built around
four pillars. They include the Creed (what we believe), the Sacraments (how we encounter
Christ), the Commandments (the moral dimension of our lives as followers of Jesus Christ) and
prayer (how we nurture our relationship with God). As our parish family of the Immaculate
Conception now begins a new pastoral year, so much of what we do as a community of faith is
centered on the four pillars of the Catechism. For example:
On September 26, 2014 our junior and senior high school Youth Groups had a great
beginning when almost 50 teenagers from our parish gathered together for a barbeque. The
evening also afforded them a wonderful opportunity to pray together and be strengthened in their
Catholic faith. Please pray for the teenagers and young adults of our parish that they may hear
and heed God’s call. God is calling each of them not only to holiness of life but also to a
particular vocation. What are you doing to help your children or grandchildren discover their
vocation? Are you an inspiration (a good role model) to the children in your family?
On Wednesday, October 15, 2014 Bishop Edward Cullen will visit our parish to
administer the Sacrament of Confirmation to 74 of our children in eighth grade. On that
occasion, Bishop Cullen will anoint them with Sacred Chrism and seal them with the gifts of the
Holy Spirit: Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Fortitude, Knowledge, Piety, and Fear of the
Lord. Pray for the children of our parish that they may always stand for and witness to the
gospel values of Jesus Christ.
The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults began on Monday evening, September 29,
2014 with 15 interested adults and will continue weekly throughout the year. This is the
Church’s perennial invitation to anyone who wants to increase their understanding of and/or
active participation in the Catholic Church. The RCIA offers a supportive means of responding
to the invitation of Jesus to “Come, follow me”. For additional information, please call myself
or Deacon Paul Hiryak at 610-582-2411.
Trusting that God will continue to bless you and your families and with the assurance of
my continued prayers and best wishes, I am
Sincerely yours,

include recitation of the Rosary and time to socialize
with other women of the parish getting to know each
other better. Please join us at any meeting held the
third Wednesday of each month September through
May (no meeting in December).
If you have any questions, or wish to join, please feel
free to contact Tracey at 484-645-3714. We look

SUNDAY SCHOOL
Our Sunday School program began in
September. The program is open to children
from preschool (ages 3 and up) to
Kindergarten. It is held during the 9 am Mass in the
social hall.
Each class begins with a prayer and a song. The song
involves movements, dancing and jumping getting
everyone involved. We break the children up into three
groups based on their age and/or school level. One
teacher is assigned to each group and one coordinator is
present the entire class. The teacher will explain the
lesson of the gospel through stories and games. Small
crafts may also be done. At the end of the class, we join
back together for a final prayer and a song or game.
During the year, we celebrate special holidays with
parties or a craft. We also celebrate Christmas and the
end of the year with a song or two sung by the children
at Mass.
Registration forms are available in the narthex, or you
may register when you drop your child off at Sunday
School.
We have a wonderful group of teachers for Sunday
School, but we always welcome new volunteers. You
can volunteer once a month, twice a month, once in a
while, or whenever your schedule permits. All teaching
material is provided. Feel free to call Linda at 610‐582‐

Youth Group News
ICC Youth Group is open to all teens in 7th
through 12th grade. Our junior high (7th &
8th graders) meet on the first Friday of each
month, and our high school group meets on
the second Friday of each month. Meetings
are held in the lower level of the Parish Office Building
(near the playground) from 7-9pm. Our meetings offer
teens a place where they feel welcomed and able to express
their faith while participating in fun activities, performing
community service, socializing, and playing games.
Check our bulletin board in the narthex of the church to
stay up to date on upcoming events and also to see pictures
of past events.
Over the summer a team of 9 high school students went on
a weeklong mission to the Father Beiting Appalachian
Mission Center in Louisa, KY. While there, they repaired
houses, visited homes, and refurbished transitional housing
for families facing financial hardship. The team attended
Eucharistic adoration and daily Mass.
They shared
reflections at the end of each workday. It was a rewarding
and spiritually fulfilling experience and most certainly an
education on the poverty in the Appalachia region. The
team enjoyed the company of Monsignor McCann who
shared some of the duties for a few of the days.
September was a very busy month for our Youth Group
starting September 6 with the picking of 3,700 pounds of
the potatoes in Kutztown for the Potato Project which
donates it’s entire harvest to local food banks. Nine of our
high school students attended a weekend spiritual retreat at
the Wayside Lodge in Daniel Boone Homestead on
September 12-14. On September 23, our youth group
served dinner to 130 people at the Community Table at the
Birdsboro Food Pantry. We thank everyone who provided
meals/drinks/desserts and/or served at the Community
Table. This is a large undertaking, which could not happen
without the prayers and support of many parishioners. We
wrapped up the month on September 26 with our Welcome
Back Picnic. 35 Junior and senior high students attended.
October/November Events:
Our first junior high meeting was held October 3 and the
high school meeting was on October 10. On Saturday
morning October 25, we will be packing over 1,300 food
totes for low-income senior at the Greater Berks Food Bank
followed by a few games at Laser Quest and some pizza.
The junior high will have our second meeting on November
7 with the senior high group meeting on November 14.
Saturday, November 22 we will be raking leaves for some
of the residents of Valley View Community in Birdsboro
who are unable to care for their properties.
If you are a teenager and have never attended one of our
meetings, we invite you to join us!
Immaculate Conception Academy
It’s back to school for Immaculate
Conception Academy!
Our children
returned to class in late August anxious to catch up
with friends and share stories of summer.
In September, we held two “Back to School
Nights” to give Kindergarten – 8th grade parents and
faculty the opportunity to meet and discuss the
upcoming year. Our Early Education parents also
had an important orientation night to get their little
ones ready to start school.
Student council elections were exciting this fall:
students campaigned with posters and speeches,
created a new voter registration process; voted
electronically on iPads; and a special Mass
concluded with student leader inductions.
Congratulations to those who were elected:

CCD School Year
Our CCD classes began with an opening Mass, and are
fully underway. We have close to 400 students in the
program guided by an excellent staff of volunteers.
These individuals not only bring the Good News to our
children in the classrooms; they bring Jesus to life for
the children in their actions and examples by
volunteering their time to teach, aiding in the
classrooms, and minding the doors and hallways.
We are blessed with a dedicated group of catechists
who are willing to volunteer their time teaching our
parish children. They share the joy of helping the
parents in the education of their children in the
Catholic faith.
We will also be taking two weekly Intentions for the
Sanctuary Lamp (Sunday through Saturday).
Our education team:
Due to the number of Intentions and the limited
number of days in a year, we ask that you limit your
Mass Intention requests to four per person per year
(two daily and two weekend).

a Mass or two for their living and deceased loved
ones, special occasions and anniversaries.

BAPTISM CLASSES
If you have a new baby, or are awaiting
the blessed event, it’s not too early to
prepare for your child’s baptism.
Information, including Godparent Certification,
must be on file in the Parish Office no later than
two weeks before the scheduled Baptism. Classes
are held in the lower level (rear entrance) of the
Church Office on the first Tuesday of each month at

Thanksgiving Eve
Ecumenical Service
Our parish family of the
Immaculate Conception will host the
community “Thanksgiving Eve Ecumenical
Service” on Wednesday evening,
November 26, 2014 at 7:00pm. Everyone is cordially invited to attend. The
prayer service will be followed by a
reception in the social hall featuring light
refreshments. Plan to attend and invite a
friend or neighbor.
Bereavement
Support Group
If you are grieving the loss of a
loved one, our parish Bereavement Support
Group meets on the third Monday of each
month.
There is a presentation about
different aspects of grieving and a time to
share with each other. Or maybe you need
someone to talk to NOW. Losing a loved
one, whether it happens suddenly, or over an
extended period of time due to an illness, is
a tremendous shock. It may be unlike
anything you have experienced before.
Family and friends are supportive but
sometimes talking to someone who is not
directly involved in our grieving is what is
needed. Whatever your need is, we will do
whatever we can to help you to deal with
this most difficult time. If you would like
more information please call either Pat at
610 775-1892 or Toni at 610 404-1389.

Fall/Winter 2014
In the Catholic Youth Organization, the athletic and
cultural programs give each participant an opportunity
to grow in character, ability and community while
honoring oneself, as well as one’s family, teammates,
officials and church. Each season our parish youth
participate in the many athletic and cultural programs
offered through the Immaculate Conception Catholic
Youth Organization (IC CYO). To sustain this focus,
the CYO endeavors to help young people be more
Christ-like in the way they live. Each participant,
parent, coach, official and volunteer need to work
together to bring the Catholic vision and values to life
in every aspect of the CYO programs.
The 2014 Immaculate Conception CYO Fall season is
well underway! Delivering another successful season
of fun and competition!
Girls Volleyball- (6th through 8th grade) The
Lady Knights have been practicing very hard, playing
in league games and “spiking” the competition! Under
the spirited Head Coach Pat Mangan, the volleyball
team is well positioned to duel out on the court and
give all they have to help lift their team to victory!
With the number of players that have filled the roster
coupled with the talent of Coach Mangan, they will
sure to deliver great competition and fun this season!
Good luck to the Lady Knights!
Cross Country- (K through 8th- Boys and Girls)It has been exciting to say the least! This is our second
year as a formal team with weekly practices and meets
scheduled in September and October. Under the
leadership of Coach Matt Deviney as well as several
committed parents, our team is challenged weekly!
The Harriers (over 30 runners!) have been putting a
lot of miles out on the Immaculate Conception trails
and other parish tracks as well as setting goals for
personal records! Looking forward to breaking those
records at the Berks County Championships this
October! Good Luck to the Harriers!
Winter Sports Registrations- In a few
weeks, our Basketball and Cheerleading teams will be
front and center. The sounds of basketball sneakers
squeaking and the cheers from the cheerleading
squads will occupy and soon fill our gym.
Preparations are underway in making this season the
best it can be with practices, games, tournaments
filling up our busy winter calendars! Register on-line
for basketball, cheerleading, or both by visiting
CYO’s website ( www.iccyo.com) Registration
sessions will also be scheduled to meet our CYO team
and to ask questions about the program. We look
forward to the upcoming season!
Volunteer your time- Open positions
Volunteering is a very rewarding experience. Please
consider joining in on many of the opportunities that
help push the IC CYO program to new and exciting
initiatives and successes. Also, if you interested in
leadership positions on our Board, we have positions
open on our IC CYO Board to seize the opportunity in
developing our program. Please contact our Board
President, Matt Deviney (610)-404-2245 with
questions and/or interests.
Competing while remaining Christ-like in all that
you say and do is our goal at the IC CYO. All of us
in the IC CYO program hope that you enjoy your
participation in our sports and cultural events and
that we all display and live our mission each day to
help make CYO be the best that it can be.
The members of the Immaculate Conception CYO
Board are grateful for your support and look
forward to having you involved in the Catholic
Youth Organization’s programs at Immaculate
Conception
Yours in Christ,

Advocate and Educate
You can spend time with the sick and elderly in
your family and community. Support relatives
and friends struggling to hold on to their dignity
in a nursing home situation. Visit them, talk and
laugh with them. Your loving presence is a
reflection of God’s love for them.
With the proper training, you can get involved in
prison ministry spreading the GOOD NEWS.
You could become an active participant in the
Legislative Advocacy Network of the Diocese to
have an impact on a range of issues affecting
human dignity. Learn about and teach others the
gifts persons with disabilities have to offer and
advocate for their rights and dignity. In your home, workplace, school, and family ‐
anywhere, and everywhere ‐ you can be a
witness to Life and the dignity of all human
persons! Do whatever you can ‐ and remember that the
one thing EVERYONE can do is pray! Pray in
private, at Mass, with your family, with other
peaceful witnesses at an abortion clinic, or at
the bedside of the sick and dying.
