October 19, 2014—29th Sunday in Ordinary Time
PARISH
CALENDAR
The Lord be with you!
Dear people of Sacred Heart & St. Cecilia’s,
As people seeking to live lives as true Christian
Stewards, please join me each day in thanking God for
our gift of life and faith.
On this 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time we hear
JESUS reaching out to teach those who wish Him
harm—who wish to get rid of Him. Recall that early in
St. Mark’s Gospel [Mark 3:6], the Pharisees and
Herodians were planning to kill Jesus. In today’s
Gospel from St. Matthew, they appear together in an
effort to trap Him—the very one they are accountable to.
With hypocritical flattery they present JESUS
with a dilemma. “Is it lawful to pay the census tax to
Caesar or not?” [Matthew 22:17]. They are asking if
the law of GOD permitted that payment. The Roman
occupiers imposed this tax on the Jewish people.
Roman coinage must be used. At that time the coin
would have the image of the emperor, Tiberius Caesar
(AD14-37). The wording on the coin was “Tiberius
Caesar, august son of the divine Augustus, high priest.”
The coin itself, a bitter reminder of Rome’s rule, was
distasteful to most Jews.
The response of JESUS, “Then repay to Caesar
what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to
GOD” [Matthew 22:21], not only avoided the trap, but
also makes an important religious point. Repaying to
GOD must always be the first priority for every person,
a payment expressed through lived justice, by good
works. For St. Matthew’s readers through the centuries
JESUS is saying, as He said in the parable of the tenants
[last Sunday], that He wants followers “who will give
Him the produce [good works] at the proper
times” [Matthew 21:14].
As to the role of Caesar [civil authority],
JESUS’ words to Pilate are helpful: “You would have
no power over Me if it had not been given to you from
above” [John 19:11].
So there is a place for
government, but the ultimate source of any power or
authority is GOD.
So who are we accountable to? Where should
our first priority be? Who gives us our ability to exist—
to take our next breath?
GOD, help us we pray, not to have misplaced
priorities! Help us to always rejoice in the life YOU
give us everyday!
Fr. Peter Augustine, OSB

OCTOBER IS RESPECT LIFE MONTH
As we take part in the many Respect Life events
scheduled for this month, many of us are
planning ahead for the January March for Life.
Here is a link to the new and improved
website: http://marchforlife.org/ Note the new
hotel location for the March for Life conference
and the handy Trip Planner that is now part of
the website.
FREE Daily Mass Readings & Meditation
Can’t make it to daily Mass but want to be able to tap
into the daily readings of Mass? Or if you do go to daily
Mass, would you like to revisit those readings? How
about the bonus of having reflections on those readings
every day, for FREE?
Here’s how:
Go to www.wau.org (Word Among Us).
When it opens, click “Today’s Meditation” on the upper
left.
Now click the “View NAB Reading at USCCB.org.”
link under “Meditation.” A new window will open.
(You are now at the United States Conference of
Catholic Bishops Web site.)
Read that day’s Mass readings.
Close the USCCB window.
Now read the “Meditation,” a reflection on the day’s
readings.
When it only takes five to ten minutes, how can you not want
to take advantage of something simple yet meaningful that
will improve your quality of life daily?
