November 9, 2014—The Dedication of the Lateran Basilica
PARISH
CALENDAR
The Lord be with you!
Dear people of Sacred Heart & St. Cecilia’s,
This Sunday we do not celebrate the usual 31st
Sunday in Ordinary time, but rather—THE
DEDICATION OF THE LATERAN BASILICA IN
ROME. Why do we celebrate the dedication of a
particular church building, especially one so far away?
You may recall that JESUS clearly established
His church upon His apostles. He said to Simon Peter,
“you are ‘Rock,’ and on this rock I will build My church
and the gates of hell will not prevail against it. I will
entrust to you the keys of the kingdom of
heaven,” [Matthew 16:18-19]. St. Peter was the first
leader/bishop of the church in Rome. It wasn’t until the
Edict of Constantine in AD 312, which made Christ’s
church legal in society, that it was able to have public
places in which to celebrate the Holy Mass. On
November 9, 324, St. Peter’s successor, Pope Sylvester I,
dedicated the Lateran Basilica as the cathedral church of
Rome.
It is honored as the mother church of
Christendom. Today the Catholic world celebrates the
1,690th anniversary of its dedication.
So today we celebrate not just the dedication of a
particular building—The Lateran Basilica in Rome—
BUT we celebrate what it signifies. It is the seat [the
place of the chair/cathedra] of St. Peter, the very one
upon whom Christ founded His church.
At the time of JESUS the Temple of Jerusalem
was held sacred by the Jewish people because the
presence of God was revealed there and their sins were
forgiven. It was also the only place to offer sacrifices.
In today’s Gospel, JESUS is aware that this very
Temple has been turned into a market place. With a
truly prophetic action JESUS cleanses the Temple, by
driving out those engaged in commercial activities. “On
that day there shall no longer be any merchant in the
house of the Lord of hosts” [Zechariah 14:21]. Also in
today’s Gospel, JESUS presents a most important
teaching. While there will always be places of worship,
HE will become the true center of all Christian worship.
JESUS is truly the Son of God who remains with His
followers in the real presence of the Holy Eucharist.
Almighty God, inspire us to look back at what
Christ JESUS did to establish His kingdom of
salvation—to notice how we are living the faith He gave
us—and to make the changes that will lead us toward
Christ’s Heavenly Promise.
Fr. Peter Augustine, OSB

Here’s how:
Go to www.wau.org (Word Among Us).
When it opens, click “Today’s Meditation” on the upper
left.
Now click the “View NAB Reading at USCCB.org.” link
