January 18, 2015—Second Sunday in Ordinary Time
PARISH
CALENDAR
The Lord be with you!
Dear people of Sacred Heart & St. Cecilia’s,
The lessons of the Sacred Scripture for the 2nd
Sunday in Ordinary Time [today], present a
POWERFUL message from GOD as to what our faith
should be about and whom we should believe in. The
gift of faith from GOD isn’t just what people “make-up
-as-they-go,” through life. The fact is that GOD “calls”
people to faith, we don’t just stumble upon Him.
In today’s Gospel [John 1:35-42], John the
Baptist identifies JESUS as “GOD’s Lamb.” This is the
same JESUS whom we recently learned through the
Christmas Gospels, is indeed GOD’s own Son, who
was born of the Virgin Mary. The “Lamb of GOD” is a
prominent part of the celebration of the Holy Mass.
The Jewish tradition and the Book of Revelation 17:14
mention the triumphant Lamb who will destroy evil at
the end of time. This image of the sacrificial lamb is
carried from the Old Testament where GOD said to His
people, “But the blood from your family lamb will
mark the houses where you are. Seeing the blood, I
will pass over you,” Exodus 12:13. With Jesus,
“GOD’s own Lamb” GOD marks those who are His
people and saves them from destruction.
The disciples are being “called to faith” as they
are confronted by JESUS as He instructs them in
today’s Gospel, to “Come, and you will see.” JESUS
is “marking” them as His people.
In the first reading [1 Samuel 3:3b-10-19],
GOD is calling young Samuel to faith and Samuel
answers, “Speak, for Your servant is listening.”
GOD speaks through St. Paul [1Corinthians
6:13c-15a, 17-20], clarifying that it is through JESUS
that we [our bodies] when joined to JESUS, may
experience a like resurrection with JESUS.
GOD has approached all of us with the gift of
faith. Our response is to “listen” like young Samuel,
and to “come” to Christ JESUS. This is how we say
YES to GOD’s invitation to be one of His people. This
affirmation of faith [to choose GOD above everything
else] is a decision we make each and everyday of our
lives.
Let us pray for one another and support each
other’s efforts to renew our commitments to follow
Christ more closely in this New Year, and throughout
our lives.
Fr. Peter Augustine, OSB
