National Poetry Day

several events to celebrate National Poetry

Kenneth Steven will be reading from “Coracle”
his new book of poems. Kenneth has written
more than ten books of poetry, children’s
picture books, novels and short stories. His
work has been read on Radio 4. He lives in
Aberfeldy and writes in a tiny shed in the
garden, drawing inspiration from the natural
world and the peace around him.
A local poetry group will be sharing their
favourite poems. Come along and bring your
own favourite.

Book Week
Scotland 2014
24 – 30 November
The third annual celebration of books and
reading will go ahead this year from Monday
24 November all over Scotland. There will
be a range of events happening in libraries
across East Dunbartonshire including author
visits, children’s events and book giveaways.
This year’s specially commissioned booklet
‘Scotland’s Stories of Home’ will feature
stories and poems written by ordinary Scottish
folk, inspired by theme What does ‘home’
mean to you?

winning natural history photographer and film
maker.

including seven Emmys, so this presentation
will be spectacular.

Calling all ‘Shark in the Park’ and Jacqueline
Wilson fans! To celebrate Book Week
Scotland, Nick Sharratt will be coming to
East Dunbartonshire Libraries.
Nick Sharratt is the illustrator of over
250 children’s books, including the awardwinning picture books You Choose, Pants,
Eat Your Peas and Shark in the Park. In this
session he’ll be sharing some of his personal
favourites and reading some brand new
stories too. There’ll be plenty of drawing,
story-telling and all-round silliness!

library staff can offer assistance.

Artists – Annual Exhibition

This hugely popular annual exhibition includes
exciting new work by the long established,
multi-talented Glasgow Society of Women
Artists. From traditional to dynamic abstract
works in a wide range of mediums.

Barbara has been a regular visitor to the Isle
of Iona for thirty-five years. In the spring of
2011 she began a project of photographing
the island’s landscape every month for 12
consecutive months. It was just the beginning
and she has returned many times since to
continue making images.
Figures and Faces

This exhibition looks at the many styles of
portraits and figures in the Lillie’s permanent
collection. A portrait can be an artist’s
representation rather than a photographic
image; it can be the whole figure or just the
face. It can capture the sitter’s personality or
their mood. A portrait can also illustrate more
than one person.
This collection reflects her perspective of Iona
and the developing relationship with the island
that she has made through her photography.
It includes intimate landscape imagery of
patterns in the sand, fleeting moments of light
on wave and the sculptural form and colour of
Iona’s ancient rocks as well as the bigger view
of an island in its differing moods from dawn
to dusk.

Barbour as our guest artist. Marie teaches at
Kirkintilloch High School as well as working
at her own studio in Glasgow. Here at the Auld
Kirk Museum you will have the opportunity to
purchase some of her beautiful oil paintings.
The museum will also be hosting a feast of
wonderful craft work from local and national
craft makers. To start it all off Santa himself
will be giving out prizes to competition
winners at the opening on Saturday
