Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery Trust
became a charitable trust on 5th May 2011
and is managed by an independent board of
trustees. The Trust receives funding from
Carlisle City Council plus grants for many of
its activities from the Arts Council England
(ACE) and Cumbria County Council.
4 October – 11 January
With toys and games including Risk, GI
Joe and classic British toy soldiers, as well
as photographs and archive documents,
War Games represents differing sides
of conflicts from around the world. This
thought-provoking exhibition reveals the
sometimes surprising links between play
and wider attitudes towards warfare, and
delves into the secret history of toys as
tools of propaganda and espionage.
The exhibition is highly interactive,
encouraging children to dress up, play
at espionage and engage in many other
activities that encourage learning, while
photography, film and games all contribute
to a diverse and stimulating experience.
The display encourages visitors to question
their own views and contribute to a
debate on playing at war.

Richard Slee: Work and Play
14 June – 14 September
Richard Slee (born Carlisle, 1946) has
built a reputation as one of Britain’s most
important contemporary ceramic artists.
His work challenges conventional notions
of ceramic art and demonstrates the fluid
boundaries of 21st century ceramic practice.
A rt G a l l e ry E x h ibiti o n s
This exhibition covers Slee’s most radical
work to date produced over the last 10
years. ‘Work and Play’ is grouped into two
themes: ‘Work’ which contains the tools
and signs of both business and industry;
and ‘Play’ which focuses on the equipment
and symbols of sport and leisure. In the
exhibition Slee evokes a fantasy of the
traditional day: eight hours work, eight
hours play.
This collection sees Slee exploring new
materials, processes and subject matter.
Inspired by a love for the ‘great indoors’
and a preoccupation with making, DIY and
popular culture Slee chose to reimagine
the world of commonplace tools, sports
equipment and domestic objects.
Slee’s work is celebrated as art and craft as
he remains committed to craft processes
and the domestic environment. Slee’s
one-off pieces demonstrate his peerless
ability to create impeccable super shiny
ceramics. His pieces flawlessly integrate
sourced materials and readymades from
DIY stores, toyshops and sports shops.
Some pieces contain no ceramics at all.
The results can be unexpected, humorous,
ridiculous, emphatic, melancholic or
entertaining. You decide.

The show includes a speciallycommissioned work produced as part of a
creative response competition for Outside
In artists and is supported by online
learning resources. A limited edition, fine
press Artist’s Book ‘Means of Production
Richard Slee’ accompanies the exhibition.

Stunning in Silver
4 October 2014 – 11 January 2015
This display focuses on one of the most
romantic and extravagant wedding
dresses in the Tullie House collections.

made the dress to the bride’s own design.
The bride chose an exquisite fabric for
her dress made from silver thread. As
an alternative to the traditional white
wedding dress it is simply stunning.

This touring exhibition combines the
natural world with the evolution of period
dress from medieval times to the present
day. Each costume represents an individual
species and a specific era of fashion. As
part of the process, Kate researched
animal habitats, behaviour and physical
characteristics. This helped determine
which period style would best suit each
species, as well as providing locations and
concepts for the stunning photographs
that accompany the exhibition. Also on
display are Kate’s design and construction
portfolios, tactile fabric samples and
costumes to try on for both children
and adults.

Medieval Pottery Making
with Graham Taylor
Saturday 13 & Sunday 14 September,
10am – 4pm, Community Room
Saturday 11 October
10am – 4pm, Community Room
Participants will be provided with a glass
fronted box as a starting point to develop
a 3-D collage based on personal stories,
and use the Tullie collections to create a
magic object for inclusion in the finished
artwork. The piece can be as simple or
as complex as you wish to make it but
will result in a bespoke and unique object
that is specifically autobiographical. No
previous experience is required as Julian
will guide and support you through the
two day course.
Participants will have the opportunity to
create their own mediaeval inlaid encaustic
tile panel. Encaustic tiles are beautiful
examples of medieval craftsmanship,
and are decorated with patterns made
from different colours of clay rather than
glaze. Graham will also have a handling
collection of replica mediaeval pots and
will demonstrate throwing on a mediaeval
potter’s wheel - participants who don’t
mind getting clay coated can have a go
on the wheel themselves! Old clothing is
advised.

world class collections.
Thirlie Grundy joins us
once more for a fascinating
talk about research she
has conducted around the
building of Early Medieval
Carlisle.
This will be an ‘interactive’

not only hear about these
ambitious plans but you will

Pottering amongst the
seeds and cuttings at the
back of his ramshackle
greenhouse in the garden
of a Gloucestershire manor
house is Herbert Pinnegar.
In-between potting up and
potting on, he recounts his
journey from orphan boy
to legendary head gardener
‘Old Herbaceous’. Sown
with seeds of gardening
wisdom, this charming one
man show has attracted
rave reviews and is at heart
a love story – a humorous
portrayal of a singleminded yet gentle man
with a passion for plants.
We’ll be serving a delicious
selection of tapas from
5.30pm, at a special rate of
3 options for £10. The bar
opens from 5.30pm.
To tie in with our War
Games exhibition, this
illustrated talk from Dr Sean
Carter (Senior Lecturer
in Political Geography at
the University of Exeter)
will discuss some of the
histories of war play,
particularly in relation to
the Cold War. The talk will
also consider the extent to
which we can understand
contemporary geopolitical
events through the study of
toys. This part of the talk
will focus on the history
of ‘Action Man’ and on
the ‘Her Majesty’s Armed
Forces’ toy range, which
makes explicit references to
British military involvement
in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Bar opens 6.45pm.

Award-winning adventurer John Pilkington
spent five months in 2013 exploring the
Balkan mountains. “I’d visited Yugoslavia
briefly in the 1970s,” he says. “Since
then they’ve abandoned communism,
suffered brutal conflicts and taken small
steps towards coming together with the
rest of Europe. In Bosnia and Kosovo I
found people still traumatised, but many
were working hard to create a peaceful
future.” Starting in Trieste, John also met
people in the remotest villages of Albania,
Macedonia and Bulgaria, before carrying
on to Turkey and finally the Bosporus.
His stunning photos and entertaining and
informative commentary make this a talk
not to be missed.

At the start of the twentieth century
Britain was unique among the great
European powers in possessing a
professional rather than a conscript army.
When the First World War broke out
in 1914, volunteers - some two and half
million of them - continued to fill the ranks
of the army before conscription was finally
deemed necessary in 1916. In exploring
some reasons for this phenomenon
Professor Ken Brown from Queen’s
University Belfast draws attention to
the contribution of the toy soldier craze
sweeping Britain in the two decades prior
to 1914. This talk ties in with our fantastic
War Games exhibition from the Victoria
and Albert Museum of Childhood.

The History Wardrobe
presents Women

Thursday 4 December, 8pm,

T h u r s day Talks
Back by popular demand following the
fantastic ‘50 years of Fashion’ in January,
the History Wardrobe team present a
new show for 2014 to mark the centenary
of the Great War. World War One had
a catastrophic impact on the lives of
millions, both on the battlefield and on
the Home Front too. It was also a time
of tremendous social upheaval, bringing
new opportunities and freedoms to many
women, all of which had a dramatic impact
on fashions. We bear witness to the lives
of women during the war by showcasing
their stories... and their clothes. Moving
and amusing, with many anecdotes and a
unique display of costumes and uniforms,
Women and the Great War is a must for
fashion history fans.
