In the majority of circumstances a filmmaker tells you a
story, every so often a filmmaker allows you to tell the story to yourself. In the case of ‘Murder in Junin’ the strength
of the film lies not just in the perfect pacing and structure,
but also in the imagination of the audience which creates
a cooperative and involving viewing experience.

HÄNEN TILANNE
WHEN ONE STOPS
Director: Jenni Rahkonen
Finland 2012 // Animation // 7 min
A virtual celebration of the short-film form, this animated
gem made maximum use of minimalist techniques. It
makes a transcendent statement about humanity, loss
and the coping mechanisms of mourning. A bittersweet
portrait of grief was consistently surprising about where
it was going and how it was getting there. This spare,
sensitive fantasy was the best example we found of a film
that synthesized all its elements – music, animation and a
refined sense of symbolism – and created a whole that was
greater than its parts. A simple but profound statement
about the inevitability of death, and continuousness life.

LAULU KOTI-IKÄVÄSTÄ
FINNISH BLOOD SWEDISH HEART
Director: Mika Ronkainen Finland, France, Germany, Sweden 2012 // Documentary // 94 min
Giving eloquent and sensitive voice to a particularly
Finnish immigrant story, this unorthodox road movie
not only tells us something we haven’t heard before but
also boasts captivating central characters. The film uses
music in a clever, engaging manner that always manages
to propel the narrative and wears its heart on its sleeve.
While there’s never a doubt that this is an intimate,
personal history, the filmmaking is exemplary. At the very
least, it will inspire audiences to take a road trip with their
father, or mother. For us this film builds a new kind of a
bridge between Finland and Sweden.
UNDER 30 MINUTES: SPECIAL PRIZE

HILJAISEN TALVEN LAPSI
THE CHILD OF SILENT WINTER
Director: Iiris Härmä
Finland 2012 // Documentary // 22 min
With a sympathetic protagonist, and a solid sense of both
storytelling and social responsibility, this documentary
put a very human face on a nagging problem within
Finnish society. At the same time it is also an affectionate,
touching portrait of a young woman whom society has
labeled as unproductive and unworthy, but within whom
we as viewers can see fire. Through economical, savvy
choices, the filmmaker also shows talent and how it can
be used to make substantial statements about society, and
individuals as well. The film is rhythmically and visually
sound, always engaging, and frequently poetic.
OVER 30 MINUTES:

DANCE OF OUTLAWS
Director: Mohamed El Aboudi
Finland, Norway 2012 // Documentary // 85 min
Focusing on a story of struggle and a charismatic character,
the director has created a film of global significance. It
sheds light on the worldwide issue of displaced, nationless peoples and the generation-to-generation cycle
created when individuals are left out of their society. The
director of this film is to be commended not just for his
filmmaking, but for the courage that was required to make
this story.

THOUGHTS ABOUT DYING
Director: Jani Ilomäki
Finland 2013 // Fiction // 7 min
We have had amazing five days watching the movies in
Tampere Film Festival. They have been most enjoyable,
touching and appealing, and the decision was by no means
easy. In the end, only one can win. This movie appealed
to us with its subject matter that we could relate to, and
its impressive visual aspects. The skilful use of classical
characters, and strongly visual storytelling with a good
rhythm kept the audience in its grip.

6954 KILOMETRIÄ KOTIIN
6954 KILOMETRES HOME
Director: Juan Reina
Finland
2012 // Documentary // 56 min
The annual mission of the Risto Jarva jury is to award the
film that is the most innovative, original and has the most
individual expression
This time, the jury decided unanimously to award two
films. Both of them are documentaries that deal with
otherness and are also in dialogue with each other. They
double expose issues of emigration and immigration,
roots and the things we call our home and homeland.
Both of the films address the viewers strongly through
emotions. They succeed in touching us without being
sentimental. Humor, even absurd humor, brings lightness
to the films.
The films awarded today depict journeys across borders,
from one country to another. One of the awarded films
was screened in the National Competition, the other
outside the competitions.
Laulu koti-ikävästä takes us on a journey full of surprises
through Sweden and the decades. The collective
experience of the Finnish Swedes is opened up to
the various generations of viewers through the film’s
compelling characters and music. The film reforms music
documentary narration. In the film, songs are an essential
and justified part of the narration and the whole message.
6954 kilometriä kotiin brings a completely fresh
perspective to the immigration discussion. The film shows
that immigration and emigration are not questions of
numbers but of people. It gives a voice to those to whom
it is rarely given. It also makes us see the absurdities of the
Finnish society.
