Welcome to Ebenezer!
We hope you find this time of worship spiritually uplifting and meaningful. We ask that members and
guests complete the “Welcome” insert and place it in the offering plate as it is passed.
Restrooms are located in the Education Building. Devices for the hearing impaired are located on
designated pews. For assistance, please see an usher.
A nursery for children three-years old and younger is available, beginning at 9:00 am, for Sunday

Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost
In today's first reading God uses the Gentile ruler Cyrus to accomplish divine purposes.
When the Pharisees try to trap Jesus, he tells them to give the emperor what belongs to
him and to God what belongs to God. To gather for worship reminds us that our ultimate
allegiance is to God rather than to any earthly authority. Created in the image of God, we
offer our entire selves in the service of God and for the sake of the world.
We believe no one
is here today by
accident. God has
called us here and
gathered us
together.
+ GATHERING +
Please consider those around you who use this time as preparation
for entering into worship by prayer and contemplation.

Confession and Forgiveness
We stand as able. All may make the sign of the cross, the sign that is marked at
baptism, as the presiding minister begins.
In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
God of all mercy and consolation,
come to the help of your people,
turning us from our sin to live for you alone.
Give us the power of your Holy Spirit
that we may confess our sin,
receive your forgiveness,
and grow into the fullness
of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.
Amen.
We kneel as able or remain standing. Silence is kept for reflection.
Most merciful God,
we confess that we are captive to sin
and cannot free ourselves.
We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed,
by what we have done
and by what we have left undone.
We have not loved you with our whole heart;
we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.
For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.
Forgive us, renew us, and lead us,
so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways,
to the glory of your holy name.
Amen.
The presiding minister announces God's forgiveness. We respond:
Amen.
All stand.

Apostles’ Creed
A word about statements
of faith: Every Sunday
we make a statement
about what we Christians
believe. The word
"creed" means "I believe." You won't find
these word for word in
the Bible, but everything
in our creeds comes from
the Bible. The word
"catholic" here means
"universal"; the "holy
catholic church" is
Christ's church
everywhere.
We have been made God’s people through our Baptism into Christ.
Living together in trust and hope, we confess our faith.
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

Prayers of Intercession
Filled by the Spirit, let us join the whole people of God in Christ Jesus in
praying for the church, those in need, and all of God's creation.
After the assisting minister introduces the prayers, we remain standing or kneel
for the petitions.
Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.
The presiding minister concludes the prayers. We respond: Amen.
All stand.
Peace We greet each other in the name of the risen Christ.
We sit.
Jesus said,
“I am the living
bread that came
down from
heaven. Whoever
eats this bread
will live forever.
This bread is my
flesh, which I will
give for the life of
the world.”
What is
Holy Communion?
Holy Communion is our
participation in the meal
that Jesus celebrated with
his disciples on the
Thursday night before he
was crucified. We are also
his disciples, and this meal
is a participation in our
Lord’s life: he feeds us, forgives us, unites us.
This special meal, often
called “Eucharist”
(meaning “thanksgiving”)
connects us to our Lord and
to all his people across time
and space.
+ MEAL +
Reception of the Offering An offering is gathered for the mission of the
church, including the care of those in need.
The choir makes its offering: O, Sacrum, Convivium
James Biery
O sacred banquet in which Christ is received, the memory of his Passion is renewed, the
mind is filled with grace, and a pledge of future glory to us is given. Alleluia.
We stand.
Offering Song
Oh, What Shall I Render
1
Oh, what shall I render in thanks to my Lord
for all the good gifts by which I am restored?
No treasure I tender could ever repay
God’s mercy and faithfulness, new ev’ry day.
2
My hands take the cup of salvation you give;
I’ll praise you, O God, for as long as I live.
My thanks will rise up as I call on your name,
with all of your people your goodness proclaim.
Offering Prayer
Let us pray…
Amen.
Great Thanksgiving
The presiding minister greets the assembly and invites all present to give thanks.
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and praise.
The thanksgiving continues with the preface for the day or season; we respond:
6 |NINETHEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST, OCTOBER 19, 2014
How do we take
Communion here at
Ebenezer?
Come down the center
aisle and either kneel or
stand at the rail in front of
the altar. Take the bread
and dip it into the cup of
wine. If you require
gluten-free bread or grape
juice, just mention that to
your servers.
Return to your seat by
way of the side aisles.
If you or your child do
not wish to receive Holy
Communion, fold your
arms across your chest
while waiting for a
blessing.
Holy God, holy and mighty, holy and immortal:
you we praise and glorify, you we worship and adore.
(the Presiding Minister continues…)
Together as the body of Christ,
we proclaim the Lord's death until he comes:
Christ has died.
Christ is risen.
Christ will come again.

...We await his coming, when, with the world made perfect through your
wisdom, all our sins and sorrows will be no more.
Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.
...Nurture in us the fruits of the Spirit,
that we may be a living tree, sharing your bounty with all the world.
Amen. Come, Holy Spirit.
Lord’s Prayer
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever.
Amen.
