Principal: Adrian Smith School Phone 432 7891 16 October Issue: 32/2014 Chairman: Denis Garner Email: [email protected] Mobile: 021 2685219 Kia ora parents and caregivers, Isn’t it wonderful to feel that warmth in the air at last? During the holidays I spent a bit of time trout fishing in the Central North Island and I can tell you, you still need to be wrapped up down there. I arrived to fresh snow on the hills above us and camping out got a bit nippy. We have all started the school term with enthusiasm and commitment. Children love being back with their friends and new programmes in place. They have all started the athletics programme in preparation for our school athletics day on Thursday 6 November. We have engaged the support of Antonia Sturt to help students learn the athletic skills needed. Our three day gifted Maori wananga kicks off at Takahiwai marae next Wednesday. We have 14 students attending this event, which is a collaborative exercise involving some of the Bream Bay, College Year 7 and 8’s and some Year 5 and 6’s from OTP, Ruakaka and Waipu. It is wonderful when schools can collectively see the value in working together on a common purpose that will make a difference for those children involved. Next week sees the end of our Great White Sharks gifted programme for the 2014 school year. Robyn Young has done a great job this year in keeping this group of students inspired. What many don’t know is how this initiative is funded. For many years Northpine, the mill in Waipu has financially supported this programme to the point where schools’ contributions have been lessened considerably. I’d like to formally thank Bruce Larsen and his team for helping us make a difference to the skills and attitudes of the hundreds of students that have passed through this programme since Northpine’s participation in 2007. Please support them as they support us. The Great White Sharks get together here on Tuesday evening with families at 6:30pm to celebrate their year’s work. We expect that every OTP student will have one of our brimmed hats on their head by week two of this term. They leave these at school so they don’t leave them at home. If your child has not got a hat for any reason they can be purchased from the school office for $17. Any child not wearing one of these hats next week will be expected to play in a covered area. Our out of zone applications for 2015 closed yesterday. Since there were fewer applications than spaces available all of those that applied will be offered a place at OTP for the remainder of their primary schooling with us. We will ask for applications at a similar time next year and it is possible we may do the same mid-year for the remainder of 2015, depending on our numbers. Continued overpage……. You may have noticed that our new classrooms are very close to final completion. Room five will move in after we have done a blessing of the building. No other classes will move this year as it is too shorter time to make the move worthwhile. The new classrooms will be in action next year. We will use the spaces for other purposes for the remainder of 2014. A reminder that our school is a dog free zone. Please leave dogs at the school gate. We look forward to another successful term where working together we can provide the very best learning opportunities for all our children. If you have a moment please check out the Northland District Council website where our children feature heavily www.nrc.govt.nz Regards, Adrian Smith Our 3 new classrooms. School prizegiving will take place on Tuesday 16 December. This year we have 7 new trophies to present. They are: Junior Korero, Junior sports boy, Junior sports girl, Senior sports boy (replacement), senior sports girl (replacement), Senior speeches, Arts award. If you would like to give $100 donation for any of these trophies, please see Mrs Reeve for details. New Super Students from the last assembly - Dylan, Chassedy and Tayah. Classroom award recipients at the last assembly. Lucky Book orders must be brought into the office by next Wednesday. School Hats - summer is nearly here and children cannot play outside without wearing a ‘One Tree Point’ hat during Terms 1 and 4.
