Monthly LUNCHEON: 11 AM on Thursday, Oct. 9th at the
Bluegrass Country Club
The guest presenter for our luncheon this month will be celebrated sculptor
and carver Lundy Cupp, who steps away from wood carving in October to devote his
time to carving pumpkins! “I have taken my craft into the world of pumpkin carving
and discovered that this fun and unique way of carving pumpkins captures the
imagination of the young and old alike.”
To make his pumpkins last longer he does not gut them. Instead, he scrapes off the
orange shell and uses clay-sculpting tools to carve the faces. It takes about an hour
to create a unique pumpkin, but the more complicated ones can take longer. “The
weirder the better. I’ve found that the stranger the pumpkins, the more people like
them” says Cupp who has been featured on two PBS shows, local newscasts and in various magazines.
Join us for this great seasonal event and bring your friends! We will have a beautifully pre-carved
pumpkin to auction off at the end of the presentation. What a unique addition to your fall décor!
Sincerely, Lynda Evjen, VP

Our Charity of the Month: Operation Backpack is a wonderful program that
supports school-aged
aged children in Sumner County that face special challenges. It has a
three pronged mission: First, it prepares homeless and needy students in our county
for school readiness each year by providing backpacks filled with school supplies. Second, the program
provides students who might otherwise go hungry with non
non-perishable
perishable food items for the weekend.
Third, Operation Backpack has established an “Emergency Fund” to help homeless families that have
become temporarily displaced as a result of fire, flo
flood,
od, etc. The program is largely run by local churches
working through a special project within
The Sumner County Board of Education.
This month we will donate proceeds
roceeds from our Newcomers Money Tree fundraiser to help support the
special “Emergency Fund” for families with school
school-aged
aged children who find themselves, unexpectedly,
in dire situations. Please join this effort by purchasing Money Tree tickets at our October Luncheon
from Sharyn Evans,, our Fundraising Director. It will support a great cause and you may win $50 in the
drawing! One dollar per ticket. Five dollars will get you 6 tickets, a real bargain!
Door prizes are a fun part of our Luncheons – like Christmas all year
round! So please consider bringing a gift to pass along and watch the smiles and excitement build
around the room as winners are called and door prizes awarded! Please include your name and the
contents to help Judy Peck announce the gift and the gift giver.
