One week after knocking the
Voorhees Vikings from the ranks of
the unbeaten, the Cranford High
School Cougars football team upped
its record to 6-0 with a 40-6 trampling of the Hillside Comets in Hillside on October 18.
Junior quarterback Jack Schetelich
made the Hillside end zone seem like
home as he penetrated it four times
with respective touchdown runs of
two yards, 10 yards, 49 yards and a
capping 90-yard touchdown sprint.
Schetelich finished with 203 rushing
yards on just 11 carries. He also completed five of eight passes for 37
yards.
The Cougars totaled 460 yards with
357 yards on the ground and 103 in
the air. On a fake punt, junior Joe
Norton initiated a 66-yard pass play
to senior wide receiver Donte Anderson (10 yards plus a 56-yard fumble
recovery and run into the end zone by
Sean Leonard). Norton also had a
seven-yard reception and kicked four
points after touchdown.
The Cougars had the luxury of using several of their reserves on offense. Sophomore running back Brian
McGovern carried twice for 92 yards,
which included an 84-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Sophomore Patrick Hoey had four carries
for 19 yards and senior Jake Palumbo
carried three times for 11 yards. Veteran senior Luke Christiano had five
carries for 26 yards and had one reception for minus two yards, and veteran Donavin Walker had three carries for 11 yards. Senior wide receiver Eric Donahue had three receptions for 32 yards.
The Comets were limited to 146
total yards, 88 in the air and 58 on the
ground thanks to the stubborn Cougars’ defensive swarming. Quarterback Fazion Rock completed nine of
18 passes for 85 yards, which included two interceptions. Quarterback Kevin Miller completed one pass

The Cougars’ first touchdown drive
covered 77 yards on 11 plays, concluded with Schetelich’s two-yard
scoot into the end zone. The twopoint conversion attempt failed. Later
in the first quarter, Christiano made
an interception that set up a five-play,
26-yard scoring drive when
Schetelich sprinted 10 yards for the
touchdown early in the second quarter, making the score, 13-0. Hillside’s
Branch answered with a five-yard
touchdown run, making the score at
the half, 13-6.
In the third quarter, Schetelich
capped a four-play, 57-yard march
with his 49-yard touchdown run to up
the score to 20-6, then Norton, on a
fake punt, passed to Anderson, who
fumbled after a 10-yard gain. Leonard
recovered the fumble and sprinted 56
yards for the touchdown.
In the fourth quarter, it took only
one play when Schetelich found the
seams and dashed 90 yards for the
touchdown then the final touchdown
took only two plays when McGovern
outran the Comets and soared 84 yards
for the touchdown.

Blue Devils Gymnasts Top
Summit Lady Hilltoppers
The Westfield High School gymnastics team improved its record to 80 with a 105.85-103.9 victory over
the Summit Hilltoppers in the final
dual meet of the season in Westfield
on October 14. The Blue Devils will
prepare to defend their title at the
Union County Tournament to be held
in Westfield tomorrow, Friday, October 24.
Against the Hilltoppers, the Blue
Devils received contributions from

CRANFORD ATHLETES OF THE WEEK...Sophomore Connor Fitch was the
top finisher for Cranford with a personal best at the Union County Conference
Cross-Country championships last week. Senior Beth Fulton continues to be a
strong force on both offense and defense on the varsity volleyball team and will
help the Cougars as they head into the Union County Tournament this week.
SPF PAL Grid Kids Weather
Tough Battle against Sparta
In the five football games played at
Pope John High in Sparta on October
19, the Scotch Plains-Fanwood PAL
left with a 1-3-1 record.
The marque matchup was in the A
level when the Raiders and Sparta
Bears ended in a 14-14 tie. That game
was a rematch of last year’s B level
playoffs when Sparta upset the Raiders.
The undefeated SPF A team rallied
from a 6-0 deficit at halftime to come
away with a 5-0-1 record and remain
in first place in its division. The Raiders were sparked by the running of
Alex Oslislo, who rushed for 139
yards and scored both TDs. Charlie
Fugett’s successful PAT kick on the
second touchdown proved key.
Oslislo and fellow back Kyle
Estivene received study blocking
from linemen Nicky Smith, Billy
Root, Gianni Caro Esposito, Matt
Fazzino and Doug Tibbals. The defense also stood tall behind tackle Jay
Jay Sistrunk, linebacker Ryan
Johnson and backs Anthony Porter
and Danny Wright. Fazzino also kept
Sparta pinned deep in its own territory with his booming punts.
The Raider D White team opened
with its 24-6 victory. Zack Harmer,
Thomas Ricci, Thomas Schmidt and
Tyrell Weir-Johnson led the offense,
while the Raider defense stymied
Sparta behind Chase Alber, Ricky
Watt, Michael Judge, Anthony
Robinson and Quinn Jackson.
The SPF B team gained 185 yards
against Sparta, but the Bears posted a
30-7 victory. Elisha Bryant scored
the lone TD on a 10-yard run and
Aidan Guma provided the conversion point. The B team Raiders received solid play from Nolan
O’Connor, Harrison Wustefeld,
Hayden Waxman, Dan Elimiani,
Carter Slifer, Bobby Root, Jake Hahn,
Mike DiFrancesco and Justin Williams.
In the SPF C team’s 20-14 setback,
Kenny Yeager, Brighton Easterling,
Justin Handy and Alex Werkheiser
constantly penetrated Sparta’s offensive line, sacking the QB and tackling the runners for losses.
Also starring on defense were linebacker Kyle Wester, who created
mayhem all afternoon in the Sparta
backfield, and backs Ryan Duthie,
Kyle Sellinger and Sam Oross, who
secured the outside lanes and provided blanket pass coverage. Linebacker John Shults made a spectacular interception that gave the Raiders
a final shot to win or tie the game.
Jack Manville scored on a run from
one yard and Shawn Martin later
burst off a 65-yard scoring sprint in
the fourth period to provide the scor-
ing for the SPF C team. Hayden
Widder connected on some sweet
first-down passes when he hooked up
with Max Oross and Manville.
In the E level, Sparta outscored
SPF, two touchdowns to one. The
service line. Scarano, who provided
17 digs, had eight service points with
three aces. Meyer had six service
points with two aces and added a kill
and a pair of digs. Lizzie Sottung,
who scooped up six digs, had six
service points with an ace. Gab
Cofone had a dig, Sara Correa notched
a kill, Heard had three service points
and a dig, Holt had a pair of kills and
an assist, and Mattessich notched a
kill.
“We really have a stocked team.
We can really put in anyone who we
need at the moment and do well. Gab
Cofone really made a big difference
in the back row and a couple of other
players came in. We have a lot of
servers. Olivia Myer is a very good
server. Megan is a very good server
and Lizzie Sottung is really hitting
the ball,” Manning said.
The Union County Tournament has
begun and the Blue Devils, receiving
the top seed, hosted their annual “Pink
Out” with a preliminary round on
October 17.
“We have ‘Pink Out’ which is this
Friday [October 17] and it’s also a
preliminary round, so it’s very important that we win. It should be a lot
of fun,” Manning said.
