Dear Parents
It seems hard to believe that half term has arrived. The start of this
school year has been very fruitful and productive and we have been
very impressed with the hard working attitude of the children. This
week’s newsletter includes many recent events and news from the
Prep School which I am sure you will enjoy.
Sounds of Harvest Samba rang out of the School last Friday
Morning as the whole school celebrated our special Harvest
Assembly. Children from each class performed songs, poems and
read special prayers to remember how important it is to say
thank you for the food that we eat at harvest time. The children’s
donations of produce were displayed in the Hall during the special
Assembly with the food this year going to Surviving Christmas.
Year 4 led Assembly on Wednesday on the theme of talents. The
children explained that a talent is a natural ability and that everyone
is good at something. We heard from some children about their
talents of gymnastics, kickboxing and karting before the rest of the
class explained that talents are gifts not to be wasted. We were all
encouraged to think about things we are good at and to believe in
ourselves in order to succeed.
Children from Years 5 and 6 will arrive at the Abbey tonight ready
to enjoy the School’s traditional Harold’s Night Disco. I am sure
they will enjoy a fantastic evening and I am looking forward to
seeing them there!
As the Prep School breaks for our traditional two week half-term
holiday, we wish all the children and their families a restful break
and look forward to welcoming you all back to school on Monday
3rd November.
Best wishes
Maria Maslin
Since I last put pen to paper, a
huge amount has been
accomplished and achieved by
so many different people
associated with Battle Abbey.
The Abbot’s Hall refurbishment
is complete and it is very good
to have that precious space
back to full use. It also means
that, after half-term, we will
be able to start the trampoline club and students will
be given full details in due
course. I would also like to
thank all those responsible
for making Founders’ Day
such a success and
applaud the students for the
way in which they interacted with all the former
students who returned for
the annual celebration. Equally,
could I take this opportunity to pay tribute to both Miss Simpson and
Mr Dennett for all their hard work in producing the school magazine which,
once again, gives such a good insight into the very special ethos that exists
at our school.
There have been several curriculum and personally enriching trips in recent
weeks too. The Geographers have explored the rivers, woodlands and
coastline of East Sussex and the drama students have enjoyed a fantastic
range of theatre outings. All students in years 7 & 8 were lucky enough to
take part in bonding expeditions which proved hugely beneficial in
helping them to develop stronger and more authentic relationships with
their peers. Those taking part in the German exchange proved to be
hospitable and engaging hosts and the PE and Spanish students are much
looking forward to their visit to Barcelona over the holiday.
You will all by now have received your child’s first set of grades and please
contact the school if you need to discuss any particular issues or concerns.
Current year 11 students are beginning the process of thinking about what
happens after GCSEs and I am grateful to all the staff for their help in
motivating students at the recent 6th Form Open Evening. Miss Mal, who
oversaw the evening will be leaving us temporarily today to embark on her
adoption leave and we would all like to wish her well as she starts her very
exciting journey. In her absence, her Biology teaching will be covered by Mr
Paul Bishop, a highly qualified senior examiner and also by Rebecca
Goddard, who recently graduated with a first class honours degree in
Biology. On the Sixth Form front, both Mrs Hopkins and Miss Condon will
take on the role of acting heads of Sixth Form and their joint
experience will be well suited to supporting the students both academically
and pastorally.
It has been quite a week with which to end our first half-term of the new
academic year. We had a memorable weekend enjoying the Battle of
Hastings re-enactment festivities, a drama workshop with former student
Will Cousins, a thought-provoking Evensong service in the Abbot’s Hall and
to cap it all off, a wonderfully ‘Battle Abbey style’ Pumpkin Festival to lift
the spirits. Added to that, our U16 football team qualified for the 3rd round
of the FA Small Schools Cup and, only yesterday, the U13 football team
defeated St. Richard’s 2-1 and the winning team included 3 members of the
Larkin family – a first in recent Battle Abbey history. Finally, I hope that our
students enjoy Harold Night’s Disco this evening and a happy half term to
you all.
Best wishes
David Clark

Nursery News
The Nursery children have made the most of the mild and dry
weather with lots of garden play which has included wellie printing,
circle games, song and story times, hide and seek and digging in the
nature area for insects. At Forest School we have been
investigating the changes of Autumn, watching the autumn leaves float
down from the trees, listening to the noises that we can hear in the
woods, climbing trees, exploring the woodland colours, textures and
habitats, foraging for horse chestnuts and building ‘cave’ shelters for
our role playing of one of our favourite stories “We’re Going on a
Bear Hunt”.
The children have also been extremely busy cooking; making
vegetable soup, dumplings, cupcakes and pizzas. In addition to having
these opportunities to discuss healthy eating and hygiene the children
have also enjoyed exploring the textures and tastes of the different
ingredients and also the challenge of peeling, chopping and mixing
them.
We have also been busy going on imaginary journeys on the big red
bus that the children created from a simple large cardboard box,
which involved lots of mark making to create their bus tickets, role
playing the driver, ticket collector and passengers and encouraged
lots of rich language and discussions about their experiences of riding
on buses and other forms of transport. Perhaps you might be able
to go on an Autumn walk, bake or cook together at home or take
a train or bus ride during the half term with your child? We would
love to hear about these experiences so please remember to tell us
about them next term, bring in the bus or train ticket or even upload
a photograph and observation onto your child’s Learning Journey so
they can show their teachers and friends at Nursery.
If you have any large cardboard boxes you could donate to Nursery
we would be delighted to receive them so that we can continue to
create large scale models, especially for our role play sleigh next
term!
Our Nursery Holiday Club is open next week; please remember to
supply a healthy packed lunch for your child and remember that the
autumnal weather means they will need a raincoat and wellies at
Nursery so that we can go out into the garden and school grounds
whatever the weather. Nursery uniform is optional during holiday
club but we will still be enjoying lots of messy play so please
encourage your child to wear their uniform or old clothes.
We hope that you all have a super half term holiday and return
refreshed and ready for another busy half term!

Fabulous Artist Workshop
Art students had the privilege of working with artist Georgia Scott this week.
Georgia is a local artist who trained at Brighton University and has studied 3D
Design in Wood, metal, plastics and ceramics. Her commissions include working with Alsop Architects to design lights for the Institute of Molecular Science,
a hand-crafted installation of nine sculptural lights at Paignton Community
Library, Devon; a glass sculpture for University of Exeter Business School,
Devon: and two major light designs for the Royal Society of Arts December
2011. Georgia has also produced work for the V&A, Conran and Liberty and
Heals. For more information on Georgia Scott: [email protected] or visit
http://www.georgiascott.com
Georgia gave a talk about the practical side of working as an artist and how
most of her work is inspired by experimenting with materials.
“I make sculptural installations tailored to architectural spaces on all scales, in
buildings from public to domestic, from grand to intimate. My forms are organically inspired, using materials such as woven metal meshes, glass, low energy
fibre optics and LEDs combined to produce an atmospheric blend of ethereal
silhouettes, subtle shapes and light.”
Battle Abbey Art students responded enthusiastically to the workshop and
produced an exciting range of sculptures that will be developed for their
coursework as well as for interview portfolios.

YEAR
9
BONDING
On Monday 15th September Year 9 took part in a year group bonding day at Hindleap Warren Activity Centre in the heart of the Ashdown Forest. The
pupils completed four activities throughout the day including a Crate stack, Jacob’s ladder, Problem solving and Orienteering. The students had a great day
getting to know and trust each other and pushing themselves through some challenging tasks. Congratulations Year 9 on an excellent start to the school
year.

Year 8 met at 8.30am, prepped with outdoor gear, warm clothes, a spirit of derring-do and
adventure....and cuddly toys. With a steely glint in many an eye, it was onto the minibuses for the

challenge the students to live for one night in the wilds of Hindleap Warren, a 350 acre oasis of
woodland. After a nature hike during which Mr Bryant demonstrated his considerable knowledge of
the area, we arrived at camp. Students were presented with several shelters of varying degrees of
windproofing (ranging from hardly any to none at all) and told that these would be bed for the night.
Once the staff had made a mental log of the faces the students made at this moment, it was time to
come clean: they would be improving the camps, which would then be checked by the Hindleap staff
for viability before bedtime. They got to work with tarpaulin, rope, pegs, logs, moss, leaves...and soon
the shelters were cosy enough that even the greenest townie would pass the night with ease.
Camp prepared, it was off to the climbing wall. Hindleap’s climbing wall is something between
Norman Foster and American Gladiators - a thing of abstract beauty from some aspects and of lurid
difficulty from others. Several of the team did not feel like climbing at all, and it is to their credit
that they did so - every one of the 16 on the trip made an attempt, and they should be very proud.
Once we had all climbed to this concrete summit, the fun was not yet over - a 30 metre tree stands
proudly in the middle of the Warren. The staff at Hindleap have thoughtfully rigged up a ladder of
iron staple and a complex harnessing system, from which a zipwire runs several feet above the forest
floor. Once again, every one of the team had a go and, whilst not everybody made it to the top of the
tree, it is to everybody’s credit that attempts were made. “It was terrifying!” shouted Freya MaslinBrown with glee - and she was absolutely correct (Mr Flower can vouch that his ‘brave face’ was
sorely tested in the heart-pounding climb to the top).
After dinner, it was time for a night walk, making the most of one of the brightest moons of the
past few centuries. Students revelled in the silver shadows, and Mr Bryant again came into his own
with his knowledge and understanding of the great outdoors. On our return to camp, Dylan from
Hindleap put on a genuinely impressive demonstration of how to make fire before bidding us goodnight. After some marshmallows (or in Mr Flower’s case, napalm) over the fire and some hot
chocolate, it was time for bed. The team slept pretty soundly and, whilst it might have been a little
chilly in the morning, their sleeping bags and multiple layers of clothing came in handy.
The following day, it was off to Ardingly Reservoir to put our team building skills to the test. The
objective was the building and operation of barrel rafts. Under the strict leadership of Hannah
Skilton, one team’s raft was erected and floated with military precision. The other team, possibly
suffering from the after effects of a night in the wilderness, were a little more sluggish. Unfortunately,
their raft was not nearly so watertight and a barrel pinged out of place, dunking most of the
buccaneers into the water. It was an excellent experience, and thanks must go to Mr Bryant and Mrs
Buckland for putting it together.
YEAR
7
BONDING
Early in the morning (or late at night, depending on one’s interpretation) Year 7 gathered at
the Abbey before the birds had even had their
first coffee. The reason? An all expenses paid
trip to the Torridge Valley in North Devon. After
an extremely long bus ride, we were greeted
by the exceptionally friendly Ashley and Stuart,
a team of brothers who operate Knapp House Activity Centre near Bideford. For many of those on
the trip, this was the first time away from home for such an extended period of time. So, it was with
eyes the size of dinner plates that they huddled together for the initial team briefing. Any fears or
feelings of homesickness were quickly dispelled, however, by the fact that we were plunged into the
first of the activities: crate stacking. Safely harnessed and helmetted, the group had to work as a team
to organise the building of a tower of plastic crates whilst standing on the top of it. After some initial
teething problems, the team began to gel and the record height of 12 crates high (about 13 feet!) was
recorded. The rest of the week passed without a hitch as students got to know one another, test their
own limits and become acquainted with the wonderful flora, fauna and pace of life found in and around
Bideford and Westward Ho!
Other activities included rock pooling, swimming, tunnelling (which required children to challenge
their fear of the unknown and delve head-first into concrete and iron tunnels below the ground),
surfing, bodyboarding, a ropes course, waterskiing, crabbing and climbing and abseiling. All of the activities required the students to step out of their comfort zone (no Nintendo DS’s allowed!), and work
together. In addition, they were trying a lot of these activities for the very first time. It was a wonderful experience for all involved, even Mr Flower (who was thrown unceremoniously from an inflatable
rubber ring in front of the entire trip at 20mph). “It was a great trip, but I’m really tired now. I’m glad
I tried the tunnelling - that was really scary!” said Immy Birkett. Although the children returned home
absolutely exhausted, they came back filled with confidence as well as stories for Mum and Dad of
enormous crabs, golden sands, dark and scary tunnels and memories to last a lifetime. Thanks to Mr
Bryant, Mrs Buckland and Miss Davey for all of their support.

Founder’s Day
Founder’s Day at Battle Abbey has been a popular and thought-provoking tradition since 1981 and in a change to recent years the weather was seasonal
and fairly rainy as former pupils, current parents and guests made their way to St Mary’s Church for the service. The school saw new and old students
alike returning to it once more, from newly arrived year sevens, to alumni from decades past.
This year saw the return of former pupil, and guest speaker, Donna Mitchell, who now works for charity group 3VA, a group who provide support for
voluntary and community organisations throughout Sussex. A role she maintains as well as fulfilling a brief as a member of the School’s former pupils
association (BAFPA). Donna left Battle Abbey School in 1987 and she spoke about that very certain Battle Abbey confidence that stays with you
throughout your life, the feeling of being part of the Battle Abbey family which set her up to be a confident and independent adult.
The service also included ‘Anthem for the Abbey’, a piece specifically written to celebrate the School’s Centenary year in 2012, and meditations on the
school by current pupil and School Guardian; Phoebe Crane, who spoke of her 15 years at Battle Abbey School, all the way from Nursery through to
School Guardian. Phoebe spoke of the special feel of the school and how, now reaching the end of her time at the Abbey, she will miss it greatly. There
were also readings from current pupils Greg Melville and Robbie Ellis.
Luckily the Abbot’s Hall ceiling had been completed ahead of schedule and the scaffolding was down in time for the guests to enjoy tea coffee and cake in
the Great Hall, Library and Dining Room, on the congregation’s return to the Abbey. Some former pupils took the opportunity for a tour of the School
and Boarding Accommodation, and no doubt a trip down memory lane, ably guided by the current Boarders and Sixth Formers.
Here’s to many more Founder’s Days to come!

Dancers Perform at the V&A and Brighton
Dome as part of the Google Dance Project
After many gruelling rehearsals over the summer with a professional
choreographed and tech team, the 7 dancers selected for the Goggle
Dance Project debuted ‘arrastre’ at the V&A Museum on Saturday, as
part of a technology exhibition along-side developers and scientists from
Microsoft, Google and various universities. The dancers rehearsed and
performed all day in a live workshop demonstrating the wearable technology that had been incorporated into their costumes. The girls wore LED
head dresses, motion sensored lights and pressure pads in their shoes, all
used to create a live projection behind them as they performed the 25
minute piece.
On Thursday 25th Sept the girls performed at the Brighton Dome as part
of the Brighton Digital Festival to a packed audience including representatives from Google and the Arts Council. The piece was very physically
demanding but the dancers maintained high performance standards
throughout. Paul Golz, the choreographer, said: ‘It has been a pleasure to
work with the girls form Battle Abbey School. They have a very high work
ethic, that of professional dancers, and they all performed brilliantly on the
night’. Mrs Buckland said ‘What a fantastic opportunity for our students.
They have worked so hard and their efforts really paid off tonight, I am
very proud of them…..and this is only the start’
The girls have since been asked to perform the piece at the Amex Stadium
in Brighton on Tuesday 11th November as part of a ‘Girls in Tech’ event.
A video of the performance and information about the project can be

Boarders at the Battle re-enactment
Fabulous finish for KS1 Superhero topic!
Years 1 and 2 celebrated all their hard work this half term
with a Superhero Surprise Finale! Mrs Sparkleton, the
Headmistress at the Superhero Academy, had been sending
them letters asking for help with a naughty Superhero boy
she had at her school called Boris. He had taken Spiderboy’s
teddy and hidden it! Over the last six weeks, the children
have written and told Mrs Sparkleton about the Golden Rules
and how Boris should learn to be a good and kind friend. Boris ate lots of sweets and watched TV too much so they told
him how to keep healthy by eating the right things,
taking exercise and going to bed properly! They made Boris a
‘Bedtime routine’ book, wrote stories about Superhero good
deeds he could attempt and carried out scientific
experiments to test their own Superhero strength! For
Boris’ leisure time they even made Superhero comic strips for
him to enjoy and painted self-portraits in Andy Warhol ‘Pop
art’ style for his bedroom! As a special reward and thank
you to the children, Mrs Sparkleton wrote and asked Alanda,
our cook, to make a special Superhero cake for them and
asked the teachers if the children could wear their Superhero
costumes, have a treasure hunt, plus popcorn and a movie!
Following the spectacular Superhero flypast on the School
field, our Superheroes went home wondering if there will be
another mystery for them to solve when they return after
half term? We shall wait and see…..!

Wednesday 1st October Girls Netball - BAS U11 VS
Moira House
On Wednesday 1st October 8 pupils from Years 5 & 6 travelled to Moira House
for their second fixture of the season. After learning from our previous match
and with a little re-shuffling, we arrived ready and willing to play.
We played 3 teams from Moira House, their U11 A team, B team and their U10
A team.
CJ Morgan (Year 4) first began driving at the age of 3 on his quad
bike. Although mum was very nervous, CJ shot off showing no fear!
He then moved onto a petrol buggy at the age of 5 which lead him
into go kart racing at the young age of 6 and half. With a natural
ability for driving and with great determination, he began in Bambinos
with a top speed of approx 45 mph!
Racing in both the Winter and Summer Championships it was not
long before he was winning trophies. His first trophy win was at Lydd
race track and second at Bayford coming in 2nd and 3rd place
respectively. He joined Bambino BKC Championship half way
through tournament and came an impressive 17th overall out of 33.
CJ then moved up age and class group into IAMI Cadets by Christmas
2013 reaching maximum speeds of 65mph and won his first ever first
place trophy at his home track Lydd in July.
CJ has raced across the country at many tracks such as PFI
Grantham, Rowah, Sittingborne and Forest Edge. He loves karting,
and out of everything he has tried it is this that stuck. He has had a
couple of crashes, but this is to be expected, and has become part of
a racing family with other lads and girls with the same passion.
The first match got underway, and the Battle Team made a great start having
most of the possession for the first half of the game. Unfortunately, against the
run of play, Moira House A’s scored just before the half-time whistle.
The second half was a very close battle. With BA losing out 2 goals to 1, with
the final score being 1-3.
The second game was against their U11 B team. Once again this was fiercely
competitive, but this time BA came out on top winning by 2 goals to nil. The
final match was also a victory of 4 goals to nil.
Overall, the BA team improved the more they played. There was great adhesion
between both the attacking and defensive pairs and with excellent movement,
marking and positioning, the centre court flowed well. There was a great deal
of improvement from the previous match, and the team came away feeling very
positive about their future fixtures.
Our next fixture is at home on Wednesday 12th November against St Ronans.
Sarah Duncan-Broad (Head of Prep School Games)
Wednesday 8th October Girls Hockey - BAS U11/
U10 VS St Ronan’s
We travelled to St Ronan’s for our first hockey fixture of the season. We were
met by their U11 A team, B team and their U10 team. We began by playing
their U11s and unfortunately we were outplayed and lost that game. We played
a well-deserved draw against the B team, but unfortunately, tiring a little, we lost
to their U10 team.
However, it was a very determined performance with some brilliant patches if
both individual and team play. Particular mention goes to Tilly Greenwood for
her effort in goals for the first time and Ella Foreman for her defensive play.
Our next fixture is at home on Wednesday 15th October against Vinehall.
Wednesday 15th October Girls Hockey - BAS U11/
U10 VS Vinehall
On Monday 13th October, 25 pupils from years 4, 5 and 6 travelled
to Claremont School for the first Swimming gala of the year.
There were some very close, exciting races. The atmosphere on
the day was electric from both swimmers and our loyal and
supportive parents.
Battle Abbey won 11 out of the 18 individual races, and won 9 out
of the 12 relays.
The final scores were:
Claremont 57
Battle Abbey 69
Everyone on the day swam outstandingly! They had terrific team
spirit and the result was a testament to how hard they have all
been training since the start of term. I was extremely proud of all
of them. The swimmer of the gala was ‘The whole team!’
Gemma Govan
Vinehall arrived at the Prep School with two teams. The first game against their
U11’s started brightly with some great attacking patches for both teams. Battle
Abbey’s defence was looking strong, but despite this we conceded two goals in
the first half. The second was mostly played in our defensive half, but with some
dramatic saves from Tilly Greenwood (Yr5) in goal, and some brilliant defensive
play from Amelia Midgley (Yr6) and Ella Foreman (Yr4), the final score was 3:0.
The second match saw our play improve enormously. Although a little tired, the
whole team played with positive enthusiasm and the defence stayed strong to
achieve a 0:0 draw.
Our focus for our next match is to work on getting the ball from the defence,
through the middle to our attacking forwards, and to improve our confidence
when holding the ball.
Our next fixture is a home match on Wednesday 19th November at 3pm
against Moira House

As the first half term of the school year is coming to a
close it is safe to say it has been packed full of numerous
activities ranging from bonding days to Pumpkin Fests. For
those of us in Year 13 the last few weeks can be summed
up with one word, UCAS. Endless re-drafts of personal
statements are now coming to an end and applications
are being sent off. Not only have the majority been sent,
but offers from Warwick,York and Royal Holloway have
already been received.

our A2 levels are definitely a step up from any other level

everything the school has to offer.

The new peer listening scheme in which 6th form students
help younger years has been a great way to integrate the
6th form with the main School. Spending time with the
KS3 students and getting to know them as they start off
on their journey through the School has put into perspective just how far we have come since walking through the

We would all love to spend our last year reminiscing on
the past years of our time spent at the Abbey and all the
great memories we have, but it feels like there simply isn’t
time. As School Guardians for the upcoming year it will
be hectic at times and it has taken a little while to balance
all the different aspects of School life that we are now
involved in. However, the end isn’t in sight just yet and we
are not only hopeful, but positive that our last year (no
matter how hard it will seem at times) will be one of the
most memorable we will have.

Visit to Jerwood Gallery
On Tuesday 23rd September AS and A Level Fine Art students had the opportunity to visit the Jerwood Drawing Prize, exhibited in Hastings Old Town. The
visit started with an introductory talk by Victoria Howarth. Students discovered that this year the works on display are all produced by the Drawing Prize
judges. The work made the students aware that drawings can be produced for many reasons and using a range of media. Some works were in preparation
for a final painting, others were the end product of research.
“It was fascinating to see the ways in which different artists interpreted the word “drawing”. There were drawings composed of tape, spray paint, ink and
cardboard to name but a few, all challenging the concept that a drawing constitutes only pencil and paper. I was inspired by the diversity of work displayed
at this exhibition and the range of techniques I discovered there have given me insight into different ways I could express ideas in my Art A level.” Safwa
Chowdhury.
All research is documented in sketchbooks and will the basis of the student’s practical coursework.

Oli on target for Championships
Spotlight on the Sixth Form
Oliver Grainge will be competing at the NSEA National Showjumping Championships at Addington during the half term holiday. He qualified for this prestigious competition in impressive style, winning the 1.10m class at Crofton Manor
earlier this year. Oliver will travel to Addington, Buckinghamshire, to compete
against the other top young riders from across the country in the 1.10-1.15m
Show jumping class. We all wish him the best of luck in this competition!
We are one sixth of the way through the year and as usual the 6th
Form has been buzzing with plenty of activity. The year 12 bonding day was a great success and allowed the year group to get to
know each other as early as possible. Throughout the day they
participated in many different activities including high-ropes and
orienteering. As well as Bonding Days and social events the
different departments within the school have been extremely
occupied and here is just a brief round up of some of the things
that have been going on.
Over in BEC the A2 Economics class has been working hard
preparing for the Bank of England Target 2.0 challenge. This is a
national competition in which teams meet and compete against
each other on stage in front of 100 people and four judges.
The Art Department has been packed with exciting visits to
galleries this half term. These include the Pure Autumn Arts Fair
and an exhibition at the Jerwood Gallery. There has also been a
workshop from the artist Georgia Scott who makes interesting
structures from aluminum and the A level group have used this to
inspire their individual projects.
Reception pop out for Pizza!
On Tuesday 14th October the Reception class went to Pizza Express as part of
our topic work. The first thing we did was wash our hands and put on aprons and
hats to keep our clothes clean and stop our hair going in the pizzas! Our hats
were numbered so we would know which pizza was ours.
The pizzaiola sprinkled lots of flour on the table and gave us our dough. He
showed us how to press down the edge hard with our fingers then flip it over and
do the same on the other side. Next, he threw the dough from hand to hand to
get off the extra flour and make it into a big, thin circle. That bit was a bit tricky!
He gave us each a pan and we put our pizza base in, pushing it to the edges. We
were given some tomato sauce to spread on our pizza base with a spoon and
then we sprinkled lots of mozzarella cheese on the top.
This half term saw the Science Club off to a strong start with
an action filled session at lunch on Mondays. From seeing who
could create the best protection for an egg being dropped from a
balcony out of household objects to learning about the separation
and repulsion of different liquids when mixed together. Science
Club lets pupils of all ages discover and enjoy the scientific world.
The Performing Arts Centre has been a hive of activity this half
term, with the upcoming performance of The Caucasian Chalk
Circle. The performance will be in a non-naturalistic style, which
will incorporate many different theatrical devices. This
performance will really show off the huge amount of talent our
drama students have. We will be performing this production on
the 27th and 28th of November.
Our pizzas were put on a special stack in number order and taken away to be
cooked in a very hot oven for four minutes. Whilst they were cooking we tasted
all kinds of different toppings such as onions, capers, olives, peppers, tomatoes,
mozzarella and anchovies!
Finally, the year 13s’ UCAS applications are being sent off this
term; applications are being made to some of the top universities
in the country including Cambridge, Warwick, Exeter and LAMDA.
We brought the pizzas back to school and ate them for our lunch. We all agreed
they were very yummy! It was a great trip!
All in all, Sixth Form life this term has kicked off to an exciting
start and we look forward to its progression during the rest of
the school year.

This year,www.battleabbeyschool.com
Mr Malewicz and Mrs Montford decided that they
wanted to do something fun to celebrate the end of this half
term, which has been busy for everyone. Battle Abbey’s first
ever Pumpkin Festival began on Monday, when the assembly
announced the beginning of the competition. The technicalities were brilliantly coordinated by Alex Grant and Damian
Baldry, and the ‘oompa-loompa’ sixth formers passed the
pumpkins around to get everyone in the mood for pumpkins.
A final rendition of ‘5 little pumpkins’ ensured everyone was
suitably enthused for what was to come.
17th October 2014
At the end of school, pumpkins were distributed to those
who wanted to take part in the decorating competition,
amazingly ordered by Aaron Pawson - Head of Catering. (It is
not an easy task to source 150 pumpkins!) This amount of pumpkins astonishingly ran out in 5 minutes flat.
The pumpkineers took home their pumpkins and were inspired by the many posters around the school
which built the excitement for the main event. The boarders had
immense fun carving their pumpkins with Mr Perry on Wednesday evening.
Throughout the week, the pumpkins were brought back into school with a huge range of exciting designs
demonstrating the ingenuity of the students. We had everything from a Norman helmet, a Tardis, an owl, and
many faces (some scary, some cute, some very funny)! The creations were numbered and registered with a
list of names so that they could be judged anonymously on Thursday by Aaron and Lottie in Catering, our
Pumpkin expert judges!
The sixth form, under the jurisdiction of the Allegiance Society, helped to set up a fantastic display in the Abbot’s Hall and at lunchtime the winners were presented with their prizes.
The runners up were presented with chocolates (and chocolate oranges re imagined as pumpkins with a little
help from a marker pen)!
The winners were put into the following categories:
cutest ; Sophie Elion 7KD
funniest; Amalie Primdal 7KD
scariest ; Sam Hall year 10
happiest; Oliver Grainge 11PS
most creative; Lauren Ensign 11AR
goriest; Zac Soliman 9EC
classic; Oliver Philpott 11AC
the best accessory; Ellie Bostock-Smith 7EM
the most intricate design; Jessica Montford 8EF
The ultimate winner of originality was Austin Alexander (Year 7) who
won the ultimate prize- the weight of his pumpkin in chocolate. From
a huge box of prizes, he had one minute to weigh out his choice of
chocolates on scales to match the weight of his pumpkin- 1.9kg worth of chocolate!
The event was a huge success and the pumpkins remained on display for the Sixth Form Open Evening, where they
attracted many compliments, and went on to form a display for the Harold’s Night disco. The combination of the annual
celebrations of Harold’s Night and the Pumpkin event just showed the family spirit of Battle Abbey, with the mix of
tradition and quirkiness. It could not have been done without the help of staff such as Jessica Condon, Damian Baldry
and Lea Hughes) and students (especially the sixth form- special mention must go to Robbie Ellis for setting up the display, Beattriz Castro, James Young, Phoebe
Crane, Grace Besczack, Alex McAllister,
Tabitha Fricker, Harriet Nurse, Mujitaba
Awan, Alex Grant, Jemima Bishop, Jakob
Brown, Alan Hill and James Slacke for their
consistent help, reliability and enthusiasm).
Finally, thank you so much to the students
for putting in so much effort. It made it so
worth the time spent organising this to see
so many happy faces and the masterpieces
that you had created; real showstoppers!
One of the best moments was seeing all
the students leave school on Monday hugging their pumpkins with massive grins on
their faces. We are so glad the event was
such a fantastic success and that everyone
enjoyed it so much.

U12 First Hockey Match vs Vinehall
Just as our first U12 match started the heavens opened with a
sharp downfall. This did not however dampen the spirit of any

The best player was Harriet Wheatley as voted by the Vinehall
girls. She scored the only goal for BAS. Imogen, Maddie and
Maia worked really hard in defence sending the ball out of the

Talented Tom gets the call
Year 9’s Tom Anstee was called and requested to attend the East Sussex Football Associations (ESFA) U14 school team trials. After a blistering season last
year he successfully trialled last Saturday and now awaits to see if he’s again won a place in this prestigious school side, which consists of twenty boys selected from all of the schools within the South East of the county.
We all wish Tom luck with this and hope he’s again demonstrated what we all know he is capable
of achieving.
Last week’s results:
BAS U16 Football Vs Dover College – BAS Won 8-1
The U16’s proved that they are one of our most gifted and talented squads as they set their stall
out early in the season with an impressive 8-1 victory at home to Dover. Mr Chapman picked a
mixture of U15/16 to field a formidable side that dominated proceedings from the first to the last
whistle.
BAS U18 Football Vs Dover College – Dover Won 6-2
The U18 made the lengthy journey down to Dover to play their first team in a game that really
tested their pre-season fitness on a huge pitch. BAS conceded early and failed to get themselves
into the game until late on in the first half, when they were now 4-0 down. At half time changes
were made and the team were better adapted to deal with the attacking players Dover had to
offer. The game finished 6-2 with Battle also missing a penalty.
BAS U15 Hockey Vs Moira House – Moira House won 7-3
One of the department’s targets this year is to improve the provision of girls’ PE and games and to improve match play in their major games. The U15 game
Vs Moira house was used as a warm-up / preparation game in order for the staff to observe around 35 of the potential squad for the coming season. Despite
dominating large periods of the game BAS failed to convert a handful of chances and were repeatedly caught on the counter attack. A great afternoon of
hockey, which eventually ended up with a 7-3 victory to Moira House.
BAS U16 Hockey Vs Moira House – BAS won 9-2
After the previous week’s training game, the squad was whittled down to 22 and after several more training sessions and clubs were looking more like the
team we wanted at the start of the season. This week playing their senior side BAS dominated the game from start to finish and looked like a different team
from the previous week. Captain Therese Lewis led by example with a hat-trick and a dominant performance at the heart of the team’s midfield.
BAS U18 Football Vs Bedes – Bedes Won 4-2
On Thursday afternoon the U18 faced Bedes away on their first team pitch, which was a real treat for our side as the pitch was huge and played like they
were on carpet. Initially the BAS side struggled to close down the ball as the pitch was just so vast and the Bedes side played neat football around us. Captain JJ Choron got the side fired up with several ball winning tackles that fired up his peers and we gradually grew into the game. At half time the score was
3-1 to Bedes after a howler from the defence and keeper and a dodgy penalty for our opponents. Second half we approached the game with a
different mind-set and took the game to Bedes as we went on to score two wonder goals and dominate possession. Final score 4-2 to Bedes in a great game
of football.
The past three weeks has seen our U10/U11 football team playing four different fixtures at three different venues.
The first was on Thursday 2nd October when we played a home fixture against St Peter’s & St Paul’s. It was a very
exciting game with Battle Abbey having most of the possession. The final score was a victory for our team with a
massive score of 9 goals to 0. Although a great team effort, some credit needs to be given to James Turner for
scoring all 9 of Battle Abbey’s goals!
Our second fixture was the following day, with a tournament at Bedes. A total of 8 teams were there to compete
and after some excellent performances we made it to the semi-finals. Unfortunately we lost at this point and
finished in 4th position.
On Wednesday 8th October we travelled to St Richards to play against their U12 B team. The score at the
end of normal time was 2-2, but after penalties the final result was 5-2 to Battle Abbey Prep.
Our last fixture before the half-term break was on Wednesday 15th October when our Under 10/11 team
joined up with some of the boys from Year 7 to play against St Richard’s U12 A side. This was an amazing
opportunity to show our through school connection and this also resulted in a win with the
final score being 2-1 to us.
Our next fixture is at the Senior School on Wednesday 19th November for an U11 Tournament.
Three members of the Larkin family in the
same team! The first time BAS have had
three siblings in the same squad.
