Prayer shapes everything
we do. The family is the
first community children
experience. May prayer
encompass all that your
family does.
During the six weeks of
Lent our children submitted
their prayers as a sign of
their Stewardship to God.

prayers:

Stewardship Corner
October 19, 2014 - 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time
“Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s and to
God the things that are God’s.” - Matthew 22:21
Everything we are and everything we have belongs to God. We
aren’t “owners” of anything; we are merely “stewards” of the
gifts God has given each of us. All God is asking is that we give
back a portion of what He gave us. This is the essence of
Stewardship. God should be our first priority in everything. All
else comes second.

"Let's Lick Family Violence"
Most of us have seen or heard of the NFL player
striking his fiancé. Anyone can be victimized by
domestic violence. Victims can be any age, sex,
race, culture, religion, and the list goes on. It is
true that some people try to hide the abuse, but
they often do so because they are afraid of being
embarrassed, their partner finding out, being
blamed, not being believed, or being pressured to do something
they are not ready or able to do. Many who are abused do not
know where to turn or have had bad experiences when they have
reached out for help. Here at St. John's let take a stand and show
victims we are concerned about their safety and we're willing to
help. Last year in the Diocese contributions totaled $13,091.59.
There are many who depend on this kind of aid and we are
blessed to be in a position to help. Next weekend after all the
masses the Catholic Women/Christian Mothers will be handing
out suckers and accepting donations. The money collected will
then be given to Golden House, the domestic abuse shelter in
Green Bay. Please be generous! Thank you.

Girlfriends in God
Advent Evening of Reflection
“Waiting in Joyful Hope”
Location: St. Matthew Parish Green Bay
Date and Time: December 4th, 6:30-8:30p.m.
Sometimes it seems as though we spend our lives waiting.
Daydreaming about an upcoming vacation, worrying over a
medical test, preparing for the birth of a child—our days are
filled with a restlessness regarding what the future holds.
But Advent is a time of joyful waiting as we deepen our faith
and come into intimate contact with our own longing for God
and for peace. It is a time to make friends with our tears, our
restlessness, our hunger and thirst. When our hearts are open,
when our hands are open, when our mouths are open and ready
to ask for freedom, healing and peace, then we are ready to begin
Advent. Come and begin your Advent with an evening of
reflection sure to restore your sense of peace and balance as we
enter into one of the “busiest” times of the year. Be refreshed
with prayer, the fellowship of other women and a delicious
dessert and fruit buffet and enter Advent having taken a little
time for yourself.
Cost for the event is $15 before October 31st 2014 or
$20 after October 31st.
Checks payable to Diocese of Green Bay (include Acct#40
445). Send checks to: Dept. of New Evangelization, P.O .Box
23825, Green Bay, WI 54305-3825.
Include name, address, phone number, email address,
parish/location.
Questions? Shelia, 920-272-8276 or [email protected].

St. John the Evangelist Homeless Shelter Update
"Accessing Resources to maintain your Independence
with Parkinson Disease"
As the nights have gotten colder and colder this past week, we are
reminded that cold weather is coming quickly. Imagine sleeping
in the woods or under the freeway, or in on abandoned porch not
just one night, but for 180 nights. For those less fortunate, who
have hit hard times, who have given up hope, St. John the
Evangelist Homeless Shelter will be opening Nov. 1 st as an
emergency shelter.
To accomplish the shelter’s mission,
volunteers are needed to help. While they have paid staff,
without volunteers the shelter could not offer the range of services
it does. We are proud that many St. John the Baptist parishioners
have volunteered there in the past and hope that many more will
consider reaching out to those in need. If you would like more
information on becoming a volunteer at the Shelter the schedule
for Volunteer Orientation is listed below. You must be 18 years
old to volunteer.
If you think this ministry is one that may interest you call Alex
Neis at 436-9344 or email [email protected].
Orientation Schedule for St. John’s Shelter
Mon., Oct. 27th – 1-2:00PM

know there are 8 candles next to the Divine Mercy picture that are
also available. Simply remove the candle from its holder, then
light it over by Mary, and return it to its original spot. We have
members of the Catholic Women/Christian Mothers who tend to
the candles on a regular basis, so PLEASE do NOT remove or
replace any candles that are not lit.

Prayer Shawl Request
On behalf of Feed My Starving Children we want to thank all
St. John the Baptist Parishioners who donated money or
volunteered their time in anyway to make the Mobile Pack such a
success. With your help St. John’s donated $12,194.37 to
FMSC which will serve 53,019 meals to starving children.
Prayer shawls allow people to feel the love of God
“wrapped around” them. They are created by
parishioners from St. John’s to be a sign of
support and comfort during times of grief,
illness, or crisis in one’s life. If you would
like to request a prayer shawl from St.
John’s Prayer Shawl Ministry for a fellow
parishioner, an immediate family member
or yourself please complete the form
below and return it to the parish office or place request in the
offertory basket. A member of the Prayer Shawl Ministry will
follow-up with you as quickly as possible.

With nine churches participating from the Green Bay area
466,650 meals were packed with 2,175 volunteers donating their
time. As a result 1,278 children will receive one meal a day for an
entire year.

Address/Location to be delivered to:____________________
Our Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults/Children is up and
running for this year. We have one adult catechumen--Jean
Nowak; three adult candidates—Kristi Bouchard, Jon Logan, and
Becky Lowry; and three children who are candidates--Dakota,
Paige, and Ethan Walker, Kristi’s children. Catechumens are
those who have never been baptized in any faith and are preparing
to receive the Initiation Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and
Eucharist. Candidates are those who have already been baptized,
either as Catholics or in another faith, and are preparing to be
welcomed into full communion with the Catholic Church through
the sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist. Our new Catholics
from Easter 2014, Josh Richards and Patty Dow, as well as our
RCIA team members, Sisters Kathy & Celine, Katie Drust, Joel
Johnson, Steve Pamperin, Len Rizzo, and Vicki Torres ask that
you keep these people and their sponsors in your prayers as they
continue their faith journey.

Our funeral is our last chance to make a faith statement.
Whether we have been an active part of the church
throughout our lives (or have recently just come back), there
is nothing more solemn or more beautiful than to be buried
from the church with a Mass.
Sometimes, we need to let our family know that this is what
we want. The church has meant so much to us. We want our
funeral in this sacred and solemn way.
Perhaps, some of the family has drifted from the church. Our
faithfulness to the very end may be just what someone needs
to come home. The number of people who have been touched
by attending a Catholic funeral and have returned to church
as a result is significant. Nothing could be more sacred than
these final gestures of our life. Let them speak of our faith,
our hope and our love!

Hospital Visitation
If you go to the hospital, staff at the hospital should ask you
what parish you belong to and if you would like to receive a
visitor from the parish. Please let them know that you belong to
St. John the Baptist and that you would like a visit. When you
do this, the hospital (Bellin, St. Mary’s and St. Vincent’s) is
supposed to call the parish and let the parish know that you are
in the hospital.
Sister Kathy Lange, our Pastoral Associate and Ruth Holloway,
our Pastoral Minister, visits our hospitals regularly. Also,
Deacon Nick Williams is part of the pastoral care staff at St.
Mary’s. We are sorry if you have been in the hospital and not
received a visit, but often the parish staff is unaware that you
have been hospitalized or get to the hospital to visit too late and
the person has already been discharged.
Please remember that the parish has a “Helping Hands” group
who are available to make meals or provide transportation for
parishioners who have recently been hospitalized.
