- From Fr. Jay Dear Parishioners,
The Stewardship Conference was a success for
the parish and me!
First of all, it is important to understand the
concept of Stewardship in the context of the
Catholic tradition.
Stewardship is a way of life! A "steward"
manages his/her spiritual life as Christ has
taught us...Through His actions and words,
especially in His parables, told us that we must be
good stewards. Our faith from the time of our
Baptism is one of the "pillars" of our journey of life.
If Christ is our guide in what we do and what we
say, we are good Catholics. If money, power and
status come before Christ, we are not good
stewards or Catholics.
St. Bernard's parish life is based on the mission to
preach the Gospel to all we have contact with...our
family members, our friends and neighbors, our
classmates.
I was so proud of our parish as I was listening to
the many speakers and presenters at the
conference. We are a Stewardship Parish...We
hear the word of God and we put it into action...our
many ministries that reach out to others is what
being good stewards is about. Stewardship is not
an option, like choosing to be a vegetarian. Jesus
himself more than once talked about being a good
"steward." The letters of Paul and Peter talk about
this too. It's a New Testament word.
If I am a true daughter or son of God then all
people on earth are my brothers and sisters. If I
am a son or daughter of God then God and I are in
this together. That is why stewardship is not
optional for a follower of Christ. Stewardship is not
about raising money. It's a whole way of life.
I went to the conference with three goals in mind:
1.
Understand what stewardship means in
2014...as a pastor who is the "chief" steward. I
learned from other priests and lay people what
they do in their parishes. 2. Learn some of the
new "practices" in parish life that can make our
efforts even more effective. 3. Share what I
learned with our parish Council and Liturgy
Committee what I learned...
The most important characteristic of being a good
parish is to be a "welcoming" parish, a place where
people are comfortable and inspired. People have
to feel like they belong and where they can "grow"
their faith, and welcoming all does not cost
money!!! It takes time and effort...
I was excited about representing our parish at the
conference. There are things we can do better, I
am sure. But, our small parish is serving God and
the Church in everything we do. Thanks be to
God!
In Christ, Fr. Jay
