See more details in Editors notes You can place items for sale or wanted on the Small Ads Pin Board for free. Just email [email protected] with your advert. Small Ads pin board Welcome Dear friends, when one factors in our contribution to the Diocese, heating and lighting, Rector's expenses etc. That is essentially £50 a month per worshipper in each of our villages, given that the average number at each of our services is around 30. If everyone in each of our villages were to commit to giving towards the upkeep of our churches, we could get that figure down to about £200 a year, or £17 a month per person. I wonder if you could find it in your heart to make out a standing order or direct debit form to give that kind of amount regularly to your local church so that we know in future how much we can spend on essential maintenance etc.? I know that many of you already give to charity, and for some it may be hard to find any more to give, but we would appeal to you to support your local church so that it can be used for our communities' weddings, funerals and baptisms, as well as social events, for many centuries to come. If you are able to help us in this way, please speak to the PCC Treasurer in your village - Roger Freeman in Higham; Paul Torrington in Holton; David Lugger in Raydon; or Paul Alexander in Stratford. Thank you in advance for your generosity. Get ready for an onslaught this month of preaching and speaking about the travels of St Paul through Turkey, where he founded several churches in what was then known as 'Asia'. By the time you get this, I will have been on a pilgrimage to Turkey with a group from another Diocese, starting with a few days in Istanbul to see the Hagia Sophia (the church of the Holy Wisdom) and the Blue Mosque, then flying down to Izmir and doing all the sites in the south of the country connected with Christianity, not only with St Paul's travels but also with the churches mentioned in the book of Revelation, the last book of the New Testament. I shall, of course, take my camera with me, so am very happy to put together slide shows on request...! Meanwhile, although we will still have two more Harvest Festivals this month (Holton and Higham), people who know about such things tell me that there will be hardly any produce to offer, as harvest out in the fields came so early this year. I am pleased for the farmers that things seem to have gone reasonably well with the natural world in 2014; long may that continue. You will see from this month's Centrefold that the Trinity - or 'Ordinary' - season of the Church ends with All Saints' Day on 1 November. In our services on Sunday 2 November we shall be thinking of all those who have gone before us, particularly those who have died this year, and I send my blessings to all who have lost loved ones in the last 12 months. We are thinking about setting up a benefice group especially for you, to meet socially - perhaps over lunch or tea - once a month. If you are interested, please contact me so that we can make a start on organising this. Have a browse through everything that is happening in our parishes this month - we are very blessed with many talented people in our villages, and I would like to offer my sincere thanks to them all for the way they gallantly put on fun events - like the Pudding Party in Raydon on 25th - to raise money for our churches. It can cost something like £1,500 a month to keep each of our 4 churches going Rosalind Paul Rector 1 The Quartet Diary October 1 Flu Clinic, East Bergholt Raydon Women’s Fellowship 3 SSM Bingo and Fish Supper 4 SSM Village Challenge 7 Flu Clinic, Capel 8 U3A Event, “Myths and Folklore of Mushrooms” Raydon Bingo 7 HSM Social Club Bonfire Night 8 SSM Community Fireworks Display 10 SSM Parish Council Meeting 11 Raydon Fair Trade Coffee Morning 12 U3A Event, “Satire in Song” Raydon Bingo 13 Training Day, Constable Country Medical Practice Higham Parish Meeting 11 SESAW Table Top Sale, SSM Messy Church, SSM 15 SSM Church “An Evening of Song” 14 Raydon Fair Trade Coffee Morning 22 SSM Christmas Fayre 15 Training Day, Constable Country Medical Practice Raydon Women’s Fellowship 26 Charity Coffee Morning, SSM 27 R&DGC Social/AGM night 18 Party Round the World Fundraiser, Le Talbooth 29 Raydon Village Hall Christmas Fair 20 SESAW Grand Table Top Sale December 23 R & DGC Open Charity Night 6 Phoenix Brass Concert Raydon HSM Social Club Christmas Dance 25 Pudding Party Raydon HSM Social Club Quiz night 9 Raydon Fair Trade Coffee Morning 11 Thursford Christmas Show November 1 HIgham Church Day 14 SSM Church Pimlott Foundation Choir 5 Raydon Bonfire Night 21 SSM Church Carols for Christmas 2 Editors Corner Articles for the Quartet are included if we have room, and if, in the opinion of the editors, they are of general interest to our readers. Please remember all articles will be subject to editing. We prefer you to contact us via email where possible. I’m writing this as we hear that Scotland is staying in the Union, a very historic day. It’s hard to see how this relates to our little corner of England, but it will be interesting to see how this decision plays out in local democracy over the coming years. Back to more local issues! Autumn is here and you can find invitations to fireworks displays across the villages - look in the individual village areas for more details. You can also find an advert for a pudding party in Raydon on page 14 if you’re feeling in an indulgent mood, or perhaps a pub games challenge is more for you - see page 6. On another note, we are saying a big Thank You to Shirley Hillyard our advertising secretary this month. Shirley has worked tirelessly and efficiently for the Quartet for the last four years or so and she now feels it’s time to move on and concentrate on other work. Shirley has kindly said she will continue until we find a replacement, but this does leave us now asking you to think if you would like to join our dynamic and exciting team producing the Quartet every month. Copy deadline for next edition: 19th October 2014. This is mostly done by email these days, so you will need to be computer literate. Apart from the planned highlight of the Dad’s Army Museum, and associated items, there was a World War I fete in the town that day. The Dad’s Army Museum was an opportunity for lots of reminiscing. I remembered my first permanent job in the employment exchange in Mill Hill, NW London. On my first day there, Frank Williams who played the vicar in the series, turned up to “sign on”, as he and other actors based in the local Elstree and Pinewood Studios would do on a day when they had no work. I also lived a few years later near Barons Court Station in West London, and John le Mesurier lived in a posh square called “Barons Keep”, close to my flat (I only saw him once). Another lady on the trip lived slightly further South in Fulham, and used to see Clive Dunn come into the newsagents. We heard some lovely “holiday greats” it seemed most people had fantastic weather and one family even bumped into Terry Wells, one of our ex Rectors, what a co-incidence! It wasn’t long before the “Pudding Party” (to be held on October 25th) was being discussed. There were lots of offers from various people to make all sorts of wonderful puddings, so the choice of puddings to indulge in on the night will be a sight to behold! At our next Fair Trade Coffee Morning the famous Sunday afternoon “tea team” will be in charge of the coffee pot. I hope to have some “Scholar Packs” from Tools with a Mission ( “TWAM” ) which they would very much like us to help provide for schools in Africa. It’s a simple and super idea, so do make sure you come along and find out how to help, and if you’ve not joined us before here is a very good reason. This is a very significant award, not given to many people and must be a recognition of committed service to the Suffolk Police Force. I'm sure all who know Ros will share in her pride for her son. The Suffolk Local History Council runs a Local History Recorders Scheme throughout Suffolk. We administer a network of volunteers to ensure that the’ present’ is adequately recorded at local level for the ‘future’. A Local History Recorder will note significant happenings in their area, especially changes going on around them and collect their local village magazines, leaflets, election pamphlets and newspaper cuttings. At the end of each year, they are asked to submit a short report summarising the activities of their parish. The reports are deposited at the Suffolk Record Office and available to future researchers together with the collected items. If you would like to see copies of the minutes of any Raydon Parish Council meetings, please contact Jane Cryer, Parish Clerk on 07920 713940, or email her at [email protected]. If you are interested, please look at the Recorders Pack by visiting www.slhc.org.uk, click on Recorders, then click on Recorders Pack in the text on the left hand side to acquaint yourself with the guidelines of the scheme. You do not need to be an historian, you do not need any qualifications other than an interest in your parish. In return you will receive a copy of the SLHC Newsletter and be invited to the annual conference specifically for local history recorders. To volunteer, please contact [email protected] BINGO! Mind you I had the last laugh yesterday, it took her two hours to find her spectacles in front of the Rayburn! Now it is time to prepare the garden for winter, remember to check the bonfire for hedgehogs before you light it. They will be looking for a good place to sleep and they are becoming very scarce so please keep these creatures safe. If you are looking forward to celebrating Guy Fawkes night, how about taking the family along to an organised display? You will enjoy a good show for less expense or worry whilst helping to cut down the number of pops and bangs that terrify many wild and domestic animals. It's lovely when another animal leaves us for a new home but sad that some are left "on the shelf". Feline pals, Ace (black) and Bella (tabby), are a friendly, loving pair that have been overlooked for seven months. They spring to the door when people appear, eager to start a new life. I really hope someone comes for them soon and for Tabby and white mother and daughter, Sally and Socks who have waited even longer. Thanks to those who attended our sales and events last month, over £500 was raised and we have received lots of lovely cat and dog food in our various collection bins in shops and offices. Still to come is our big sale at The Old School, Long Melford on 12th October and our Christmas Fair at Leavenheath Village Hall on 23rd November. Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua 19 to contact the practice to book an appointment at one of our mini flu clinics which will be scheduled weekly. These will be available for booking from the middle of October. Constable Country Medical Practice – Practice Update September 2014 Flu, Pneumococcal and Shingles Vaccinations All patients who are eligible for a free vaccination will receive a letter inviting them to attend one of our clinics at the start of October. The eligibility of patients for the above vaccinations is complex to work out as dates of birth for eligibility and the definition of ‘at risk’ patients is different for each vaccine. Patients who have not received a letter by the end of September and believe they should be eligible for a free NHS-provided vaccine should contact the surgery for advice. Appointment availability By the time you read this our new phone system should be up and running. It will hopefully reduce the time patients are kept waiting when they phone the practice at peak times. This, together with the changes to the appointment system outlined last month, and the arrival of our new partner Dr Olowu, should help improve patient access to our doctors. Indeed, the changes to the appointment system have already had a positive effect with on-the-day appointments being available until mid to late morning on many days. This should alleviate the need for patients to queue up at the practice or phone in at 8am. However, please be aware the demand for appointments is very variable. Some days when we anticipate appointments will be in short supply we have not had a problem, and vice versa. The new appointment system means that we start every day with the majority of appointments available for on-the-day booking, though the exact number of appointments will vary depending on the doctors on duty that day, annual leave and other commitments. If you experience difficulty in getting an appointment then this does not necessarily mean that we have a major problem with the appointment system! Please phone again the next day when it is likely we will be able to accommodate you. Please note, however, that we will never refuse to see a patient who feels they need to be seen the same day. In addition to over 65 year olds, and patients categorised as ‘at risk’ by the Department of Health, children aged 2, 3 and 4 years old will also be eligible for an annually administered flu vaccine. The parents or guardians of these children will receive a letter. All children under the age of 18 who are eligible for a free flu vaccination will receive a nasally administered vaccination rather than an injection. The Department of Health has asked all practices to pro-actively vaccinate patients aged 70, 78 and 79 against shingles, and we aim to integrate these vaccinations into our flu vaccination programme where possible. Shingles is an infection of a nerve and the skin around it. It is caused by the herpes varicella-zoster virus, which also causes chickenpox. The shingles vaccination is only needed once. However, it has been impossible to maintain a regular schedule of Morning Prayer at given times in each church each week, so the Rector will go in to pray in each church at least once a week, but it may not be on a regular day at a regular time any more. (I hope to change this in the New Year.) I am most grateful to those parishioners who do go into our churches and pray, either together or alone, to keep the tradition of daily prayer alive in these wonderful houses of God. Silent Prayer Group This group continues to meet on Mondays at 11.30 a.m. in the Rectory for 25 minutes of silent prayer, with fellowship. Do come and join us whenever you can.
