THE following application for exemption from the provisions
of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1998 (Tas) (the Act) has been
granted:
1. Launceston Women’s Shelter Inc (Magnolia Place LWS) –
(14/09/002) – Application for an exemption granted under
section 57 of the Act for a period of three (3) years.
This exemption has been granted to permit Launceston
Women’s Shelter Inc to recruit and employ women only
in the identified positions of Chief Executive Officer,
Response/Property Worker, Women and Children’s Support
workers, On-call Crisis workers and Finance Officer on
the basis that it is for the purpose of operating a shelter for
women and children escaping domestic/family violence
and/or who are homeless to provide a secure, safe and
supportive women-only space.
Granted on the 1st day of October 2014.
The exemption is for the period of three (3) years subject to
Launceston Women’s Shelter Inc:
(a) reporting on or before 1 March 2015 to the AntiDiscrimination Commissioner on actions taken in reliance
on this exemption; and
(b) on at least one occasion in the 12 months immediately
after this order is made, organising and promoting
community education for its staff and clients through
the Office of the Anti-Discrimination Commissioner’s
community education program to increase awareness of
rights and obligations under the Anti-Discrimination Act
1998 (Tas).
A person may apply to the Anti-Discrimination Tribunal for a
review of the Commissioner’s decision within 28 days from the
date of this notice being published.
