Thursday, October 16, 2014 • Hilton Lisle/Naperville • Lisle, Illinois
PROGRAM:
Refugee Camp to Harvard:
How to Inspire Any Student
Mawi Asgedom, CEO of Mawi Learning, Author
Mawi Asgedom will share how he went from living in a
refugee camp to graduating with honors from Harvard
University. Mawi will also offer a research-based
framework that any educator or parent can use to
inspire their own students. Prepare to be inspired.
As a child, Mawi fled civil war in Ethiopia and survived
a Sudanese refugee camp for three years. After being
resettled in Wheaton, Mawi overcame poverty, language
barriers and personal tragedy to earn a full scholarship
and graduate with honors from Harvard University.
Mawi has dedicated himself to uplifting various groups all across America.
He has won much acclaim for his memoir, Of Beetles and Angels: A Boy’s
Remarkable Journey from a Refugee Camp to Harvard, and his teen-success
guide, The Code: The 5 Secrets of Teen Success. Hundreds of educational
groups and classrooms across the country have adopted the two books into
their curriculum. His latest book, The Five Powers of Educators, illustrates how
educators and parents inspire youth.
ESSENCE Magazine named him one of the 40 most inspiring AfricanAmericans and Oprah Winfrey has called him “AWESOME!” and featured
him on her show.
