Sacred Heart School
Our mission is to form a Catholic community of faith and learning by living Gospel values,
promoting academic excellence, and serving those in need.
Principal’s Postings…
We are excited to announce a great opportunity for our students!
Kindergarten through eighth grade students, staff and priests will be
traveling to Sioux Falls on charter buses to attend the All Diocesan
School-Wide Mass on January 21. We will be joining all of the schools in
the Sioux Falls Diocese for Mass at the Arena. We will be fundraising in
efforts to pay for the cost of the buses. If you would like to donate
money toward transportation costs, please contact either office.
Yours in Christ,
Mrs. Haberman & Dr. Mulhair
Thank you
The Tschetter family has set up an endowment fund so that all SHS students can enjoy
the tasty watermelon treat every year in memory of Dave and Connie. If you would like
to contribute to this fund or help to sponsor this event please contact the Foundation
Office.
SHS Soup Luncheon
As the weather cools down please join us for a Chili
and Chicken Noodle Soup Luncheon! The staff and
students of Sacred Heart School will be serving chili,
chicken noodle soup, hotdogs, veggies, and ice cream
from 11:00-1:00 on Tuesday, October 28th at the Sacred
Heart Parish Community Center. Part of the proceeds will go to
benefit the Yankton Contact Center. A poster will be sent home to
take to your place of business to help spread the word. A free
will offering will be taken. If you happen to have any extra
clean cool whip or butter sized containers with lids, please send
them with your child to school by the 23rd. We invite all to come
and bring friends! Thanks!
Spiritual Adoption
Thank you for helping your child develop a deeper understanding of God’s love of
life. Please continue to pray this prayer with your child daily:
Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, I love you very much. I beg you to spare
the life of the unborn baby that I have spiritually adopted.
Second Month - October
Keep praying for me! During this month I will grow to be about 2 inches long,
about the size of an adult thumb. You can see my ears, eyes, nose, and mouth. My
baby teeth are forming. My fingers and toes are growing and I am using my
muscles to kick, swim, and suck my thumb. I have brain waves and my skeleton is
changing from cartilage to bone. I am wonderfully and completely formed.
Free and Reduced Lunches
We have application forms in the office for anyone wishing to apply for free or
reduced meals. If you think you may qualify, contact Kathy or Sherry to request a
form or get more information. It is actually beneficial to our school to have all
those families who qualify apply for this benefit.
SHS Teacher & Staff Appreciation Club
Please consider joining the Teacher & Staff Appreciation Club
(TSA) for the 2014-2015 school year! With your donation, our
teachers and staff will be able to enjoy a much-deserved
Christmas bonus. Each month from September through May we will
draw a winner of a $50 gift certificate to a local restaurant to
enjoy a meal on us. By donating at the $100 level, your name will
go into the monthly drawing. By donating at the $150 level or
more, your name will be entered in the monthly drawing, plus a
year-end drawing for $100. We also welcome $50 donations to
purchase gift cards to Charlie's Pizza House or Minerva’s. Watch
your child's backpack for more information. Please return your
donation to either school office by Friday, October 31st. Thank
you for your continued support for Catholic education!
Fire Prevention Visitors
The week of October 5-11 has been declared as Fire
Prevention Week. Various members of the Yankton Volunteer
Fire Dept. will be coming into preschool through third grade
classrooms to give presentations to the students to help them
become more aware of fire safety. This year’s NFPA slogan is
“Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives; Test Yours Every Month”.
An Open House will be held at Fire Station #2 on Wednesday, Oct 8 from 5:307:00 P.M. to which everyone is invited to attend. They will have fire trucks on
display, fire prevention packets for everyone and they will be serving hotdogs
and popcorn. The Fire Station is located at 201 W. 23rd St.
Fifth Annual Holiday Vendor Blender

FOSH NEWS
Classic Cookie Dough Fundraiser -A great success! The exact
numbers aren't in yet, but SHS raised more money than last year. Many
thanks to all the families who sold items and donated money. What great
participation! A big THANK YOU! to the people who volunteered to tally
all the orders. Don't forget to pick up your orders Monday, October 13 at
Link from 3:30-6:00 p.m. If you would like to help with pick-up please contact a FOSH
officer. Look for the top two sellers and the top selling class in next month's Chalk Talk.
Soccer Field Dedication and Mass with Bishop Swain- St. Benedict's Church was
packed on Wednesday, September 3, for a special all-school mass with Bishop Swain.
Afterwards everyone went out to the new soccer field where Kaden and Molly Hunhoff's
winning name of St. Sebastian field was unveiled for all to see. St. Sebastian is the
patron saint of athletes. SHS students chose the name by a vote at the end of last
school year. Bishop Swain then blessed the field and all of SHS sent Bishop Swain off
with the SHS blessing. What a great morning! It would not have been possible without
a grant from Legends, the hard work of many people and great donors from the
community who volunteered time, equipment and materials.
September FOSH meeting- What a great turnout! Our first FOSH meeting of the
school year was very well attended. The kids really enjoyed the free dress day later that
week. It was nice to see a mix of old and new faces and lots of ideas to make SHS even
better! It was voted on that all the FOSH meetings will be at the Elementary School-this
is a change from the original plan to alternate school sites. Looking forward to seeing
everyone at the October 27 meeting.
Upcoming events:
October 13- Cookie Dough pick-up at Link from 3:30-6:00 p.m.
BINGO- Bingo time has come with our first Bingo event slated
for Saturday, October 25th starting with pizza @ 5:30 and BINGO @
6:30 in the Sacred Heart Church Gathering Place. Don't forget your
Halloween costume! Bingo money goes toward professional
development opportunities for staff. The 8th graders raise funds from
selling pizza and refreshments at this event for their 8th grade field
trip. Come and support your school by having an evening of family fun! Watch for
details in upcoming notes sent home with your children.
FOSH Meeting- Our next FOSH meeting is October 27th at 7 p.m. in the Elementary
School gym. Childcare is provided. We will be discussing the results of the Classic
Cookie dough fundraiser and getting ready for the Vendor Blender.
Parent/Teacher conference meals- Parent/Teacher conferences will be November 3
and 6. We are happy to provide a hot supper for our teachers those nights. If you would
like to help please contact Angie Schoenfelder(668-9080) to help with the elementary
school or Jill Kouri(668-2792) to help with the middle school.
Vendor Blender: Another huge money making event for SHS is the Vendor Blender
which is November 15th. Jessica Woerner is the coordinator of this event. If you would
like to help out or have questions please contact her or one of the FOSH officers. Watch
for upcoming notices regarding this event.
If you ever need to visit with a FOSH officer about anything (ideas, concerns, use of
funds) please contact us. We wish to represent you but need your input to do so!

Old Business
 THANK YOU to all who helped with the Staff Retreat, Riverboat Days Parade, Book
Fair, Back to School Breakfast, and St. Sebastian Field!!!
New Business
 Lori Stephenson gave a report on the mass messaging system. Information is being
entered, and a trial run should be expected soon.
 Classic Cookie Dough Fundraiser orders are due September 15. Orders are to be
picked up on Monday, October 13. FOSH will be giving cash prizes to the top two
sellers and a pizza party to the top selling class.
 Bingo events have been planned. This year’s dates have been set for October 25,

November 21, January 9 and February 20 with grade level parent volunteers
assigned to assist with each.
Lindsay Poeschl reported on the Legends Grant. It is due on October 7. Ideas include
putting mats on the elementary school gym walls or adding another field (i.e. kick
ball) next to St. Sebastian Field.

The report of the Legends Grant led to a discussion about other things the school
could use. There was a suggestion made for a Smartboard or Promethean Board for
the middle school art teacher. We can use other grants to pursue this idea.

Jessica Woerner spoke on coordinating this year’s Vendor Blender to be held in
November.



Swim and Gym at Summit Center for CSW has been planned and reserved.
It would be great to have more volunteers for Ironkids Triathlon in Sioux Falls (June).
Future Meetings – October 27; January 19; March 23. A vote was taken to keep all
meetings at the elementary school.
There are still opportunities to volunteer for events throughout the year! Please
contact a FOSH representative or your students teacher if you’re interested.
