Chalk Talk Serving the parishes of Sacred Heart and St. Benedict October 2014 www.yanktonsacredheartschool.org Sacred Heart School Our mission is to form a Catholic community of faith and learning by living Gospel values, promoting academic excellence, and serving those in need. We will be joining all of the schools in the Sioux Falls Diocese for Mass at the Arena. We will be fundraising in efforts to pay for the cost of the buses. If you would like to donate money toward transportation costs, please contact either office. Yours in Christ, Mrs. Haberman & Dr. Mulhair Thank you The Tschetter family has set up an endowment fund so that all SHS students can enjoy the tasty watermelon treat every year in memory of Dave and Connie. If you would like to contribute to this fund or help to sponsor this event please contact the Foundation Office. Spiritual Adoption Thank you for helping your child develop a deeper understanding of God’s love of life. Please continue to pray this prayer with your child daily: Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, I love you very much. I beg you to spare the life of the unborn baby that I have spiritually adopted. Second Month - October Keep praying for me! During this month I will grow to be about 2 inches long, about the size of an adult thumb. You can see my ears, eyes, nose, and mouth. My baby teeth are forming. My fingers and toes are growing and I am using my muscles to kick, swim, and suck my thumb. I have brain waves and my skeleton is changing from cartilage to bone. I am wonderfully and completely formed. Free and Reduced Lunches We have application forms in the office for anyone wishing to apply for free or reduced meals. If you think you may qualify, contact Kathy or Sherry to request a form or get more information. It is actually beneficial to our school to have all those families who qualify apply for this benefit. Soccer Field Dedication and Mass with Bishop Swain- St. Benedict's Church was packed on Wednesday, September 3, for a special all-school mass with Bishop Swain. Afterwards everyone went out to the new soccer field where Kaden and Molly Hunhoff's winning name of St. Sebastian field was unveiled for all to see. St. Sebastian is the patron saint of athletes. SHS students chose the name by a vote at the end of last school year. Bishop Swain then blessed the field and all of SHS sent Bishop Swain off with the SHS blessing. What a great morning! It would not have been possible without a grant from Legends, the hard work of many people and great donors from the community who volunteered time, equipment and materials. September FOSH meeting- What a great turnout! Our first FOSH meeting of the school year was very well attended. The kids really enjoyed the free dress day later that week. It was nice to see a mix of old and new faces and lots of ideas to make SHS even better! It was voted on that all the FOSH meetings will be at the Elementary School-this is a change from the original plan to alternate school sites. Looking forward to seeing everyone at the October 27 meeting. Watch for details in upcoming notes sent home with your children. FOSH Meeting- Our next FOSH meeting is October 27th at 7 p.m. in the Elementary School gym. Childcare is provided. This year’s dates have been set for October 25, November 21, January 9 and February 20 with grade level parent volunteers assigned to assist with each. Lindsay Poeschl reported on the Legends Grant. It is due on October 7. Ideas include putting mats on the elementary school gym walls or adding another field (i.e. kick ball) next to St. Sebastian Field. The report of the Legends Grant led to a discussion about other things the school could use. There was a suggestion made for a Smartboard or Promethean Board for the middle school art teacher. We can use other grants to pursue this idea. Jessica Woerner spoke on coordinating this year’s Vendor Blender to be held in November. Swim and Gym at Summit Center for CSW has been planned and reserved. It would be great to have more volunteers for Ironkids Triathlon in Sioux Falls (June). Future Meetings – October 27; January 19; March 23. A vote was taken to keep all meetings at the elementary school. There are still opportunities to volunteer for events throughout the year!
