AUTUMN TERM 2014
CAREERS NEWS
WHAT’S YOUR PLAN?
Year 11
By now, you will have realised that not only do you
have to work as hard as you can to get the best possible mock exam grades, but on top of this we’re asking
you to think about what you want to do next year. Spot
the connection…..
How you do in your mock exams has a real effect on
what you can apply to do after your GCSE’s. Want to
stay here to study A’ Levels? Want to go to college?
Want to find an apprenticeship? All pathways have entry requirements so make sure you understand the
grades you need to access your dream course. See inside for information about the routes and destinations
available to you.
Year 13
You’ll know by now that the UCAS deadline is looming
and that it’s a good idea to get your application sorted
out sooner rather than later. Make sure that you speak
to your teachers about your personal statements and
selections as it is crucial that you make wise choices!
For those of you considering an alternative to university, your careers interview will take place this term. If
you haven't already given your name to Miss Alexander
and would like an interview, see her asap!

Apprenticeship Opportunities
It takes more than 28,000 staff to keep the city moving, so TFL invest as
much in their people as they do in London's infrastructure. Their apprenticeships will give you the opportunity to see the impact your work has on the
Capital.
Skills London 2014 is the biggest jobs and careers
event of the year. The 2013 event featured over 180
exhibitors with 35,000 jobs and Apprenticeships on
offer for 15-24-year olds. Over 30,000 young people, their parents, carers and
teachers came along and met employers, training providers, colleges and organisations.
This excellent website advice
about a huge range of options
available to school leavers. With
everything from information
about apprenticeships and employer profiles to current vacancies and tips on how to land your dream
job, log onto www.allaboutshoolleavers.co.uk to explore your options further.
Did you know that many companies offer Scholarship schemes for
students applying to university? Competition is fierce and companies like Deloitte have exceptionally high entry requirements but think of the benefits!
A 30-week paid placement in a UK office starting in August/September, a £1,500 bursary to
go travelling after the placement and before university, a minimum of four weeks of additional paid placements each academic year, A £500 annual bursary each academic year, the
opportunity to work alongside the marketing team at your university campus, exemption
from our first interview stage if you decide to apply to Deloitte as a graduate, possible accelerated promotion if you join Deloitte as a graduate! Exciting!

A Message from Mr
Wilde……….
At Southgate we are very focused on getting students
through their exams. This is
fine as long as we remember
that exams have a clear purpose- to create careers opportunities for the future. That is
why we have placed such emphasis on sound, and useful,
careers advice.
Over the last year we have both
significantly increased the
amount of independent career
advice on offer within the
school as well as buying into a
new, and skilled, careers provider. We have decided on this
route because we know the
importance of finding the correct route into future employment. This is true both at 16
and, for those that go into the
6th form, at 18. Once upon a
time the 6th form automatically
meant university, today the
choices are wider both at 16
and 18..
What we do know is that we
want to maintain our proud
record of having virtually no
students without a clear career
pathway (what the government
calls NEETs). At Southgate the
question is not “do I have a future?” but “what future am I
going to achieve?” We want all
our students to be ambitious
for themselves whatever route
they decide upon.

Year 10 Work Experience
Reasons to do work experience
Opportunities

Very rarely do students, parents or
teachers ask me why we send Year
10’s out on work experience. But
just in case you were wondering………
2014 was another great
year for work experience. A record number
of students found their
own placements and
their enthusiasm for
work experience lasted
until the very last day at
work. This was evident
from the fantastic reports they received
from their employer.
Now attention is turned
to our current Year 10.
Let’s see if they can be
as impressive and as
enthusiastic as the Year
11’s were. If you are in
year 10 and having
trouble deciding where
to go, here are some
top tips:

Speak to students in
year 11.

Re-visit Fast Tomato to
see the Career Suggestions you were given in
Year 9.

Read the guidance
leaflet in your work experience pack.

Think about your personal qualities and
skills.

Consider something
related to your favorite
subject.

Ask your family or those
who know you best for
suggestions

Students gain an insight into
the world of work. They actually discover that a bell does not
ring to signal the end of
lunchtime!

It’s an easy way to see if a career is right for you. The employer acts as an impartial adviser who can tell you all about
a particular job and what you
need to do to be successful at
it.

Its exciting! All students are
visited during work experience
and countless teachers return
from their visits every year and
tell me how much fun the students are having!
Tips for finding a good placement

Be enthusiastic

Do some research on the company

Plan your approach

Write a good CV

Know what you want from the placement
When Year 11 students returned to school in September, I wanted to
see what they thought work experience had taught them. Here are a
few things they said….

If you work hard, you can achieve your best. Only a small proportion of people inherit a business, the larger proportion work hard
and strive for the best…

That you need to work hard now to get a good job and start to go
the extra mile….it has taught me time management skills, teamwork and communication skills…

It has helped me to become more independent…

That I have natural leadership skills that may be very useful for the
rest of my time at Southgate….

That you should value school years…..

Year 12
It won’t be long before you
are writing that all important personal statement. Speak to any Year 13
student and they will tell
you how important it is
that you enhance your
statement with worthwhile
comments about work experience, and extracurricular insights into your
chosen subject. Some of
you have already applied to
take part in the North Middlesex Hospital work experience programme but other may find the following
helpful:

Arrange your work experience with an organisation linked to your
possible future career. You will then be able to understand what
that career involves and if you really want to follow that path.
Year 11 Students
Plan your career path now! Consider the qualifications you will
need to achieve your goals. Ensure you make the right choices at
A Level to achieve that goal. See the Career section on our website
for guidance on how to choose the right AS subjects. Maybe gain
some additional work experience in the summer. Universities are
always keen to see that students have pursued an interest.
