Message from Mark
We have had a very busy run this summer with four big golf events in a
little over two months: The Men’s and Ladies’ Member-Guests, The City
Championship, The Trans National Amateur and the just completed NGA
Woodcreek Classic. I want to thank the many volunteers for flawlessly
helping both the Trans and NGA tournaments be the great successes that
they were.
All of these events would not have been successful either without the
countless hours and hard work put forth by our staff. We are very fortunate
to have these dedicated individuals (team members I should say) working
day in and day out to help make your Club visit enjoyable.
On the subject of staff members, I am announcing a new program for our
staff called “Think like Mike.” Many of you know Mike Rivera who runs the
WildeWood Pub. Just as many of you tell me what a wonderful job Mike
does every day he works there. One day when the phones went down, Mike
combed over the tee sheet and successfully predicted what the golfers
making the turn would want to pick up to eat heading to #10. His insight
was truly an example of going above and beyond to please the members.
There are many other ways Mike impresses and for his efforts we have
named the program after him.
The recipient of the “Think like Mike” award for September is Eric Hughey.
Eric is our maintenance and housekeeping supervisor. He starts every day
with a great attitude and smile that is contagious. A few weeks ago, a
prospective member dropped in at WildeWood on a Sunday to look around
and get some information on the Club. Eric, who was about to take his
lunch break with his food already prepared, asked if he could assist. When
the prospective member asked about membership, Eric (who is well versed
in the amenities of the Club), gave a tour of WildeWood and then lead her
to Woodcreek to show her the other campus knowing she was only able to
be here that day.
Meet the USC Men’s and Ladies’
Golf Teams!
On Sunday, September 14 from 2-4 pm come out
and meet the teams and enjoy a clinic and exhibition.
Afterwards we will all enjoy a complimentary
cookout together.
This event is the kick off for our new long term
arrangement with the USC Golf Teams as
Columbia’s Host Club to the Gamecocks.
Watch for more details in an email and in the
pro shops.
NGA Woodcreek Classic Sponsored by
BMW of Columbia
There was excellent golf on display as usual with
Jeff Corr winning in a playoff over our own aspiring tour
player, Wesley Byran. The winning score was –19.
The prospective member contacted Rebecca as he suggested when he gave
her a new member package. She became a raving fan of the Club and Eric
because of his above and beyond actions to assist her. She could not
compliment enough on him and the Club in general. So that is how Eric
became our September award winner.
You can nominate an employee for the award by contacting me at
[email protected]. We will take member feedback,
employee nominations of a co-worker and Staff observations as the means
to choose the October “Think like Mike” award winner. Please let us know
if someone has gone above and beyond for you.
Please Welcome Stan Perry
The Members Club would like to welcome Stan Perry to
the Accounting Department. Many of you may know
Stan, as he has been with the Club since May of 2007.
Initially, Stan began his employment as a cart attendant.
After showing a drive and hunger to learn and assist, he
was promoted to Golf Shop Assistant. Having been a
great asset to the Club for seven years, the choice was
easy to hire Stan as the new Accounting Assistant.
Being a graduate from USC’s Darla Moore School of
Business (Finance), and a veteran employee of the Club,
we believe Stan will be a great addition to our
Administrative Staff. If you are at the Woodcreek
Clubhouse, stop by downstairs and welcome Stan to his
new role!

The Membership Drive ends on September 30th! Please help the Club reach its goal of 80 new members in 2014
by letting your friends, neighbors and associates know about our limited time offer!
As a reminder, those that join in 2014, and pay 50% of the equity in the category they choose will pay NO DUES until
2015. In 2015 and 2016 they would pay the remaining 25% each year and begin paying monthly dues.
And don’t forget….there is something in it for you too! If one of your referrals joins the Club, you will be given up to
a $300 credit to use in the Dining Room or for Pro Shop merchandise based on the membership category in which
they join.
I am available for any questions or Clubhouse tours you would like to arrange. Please feel free to send your comments and suggestions to me by
phone or email (803.296.0286 ext. 210, [email protected]) at any time!

Matt Tracy, Director of Golf
The summer months are over and now we have some cooler temperatures to look forward to. I would say both
courses are at their best during these next 3 months. Take advantage of the better weather and great course conditions
to get out and play at least one day a week with family or friends. Maybe a quick nine holes before or after your favorite
team plays football.
Great golf was played by our members during two big events at Woodcreek this summer. Woodcreek hosted the Men’s
City Tournament in Mid-July with member Brannan Hudson prevailing by 4 shots to become the city champion.
Brannan played great in front of the home crowd and we couldn’t be happier for this accomplishment. Fellow member
Jon Mathias also played very well at the city tournament. Jon finished at 2 under par for the three rounds and placed
4th for the event. As you will read in this newsletter, Jon also won the 2014 Men’s Club Championship.
Kelli Murphy and Juliana Sebastian represented our members very well in the Women’s Trans National Amateur
played in late July at Woodcreek. The TRANS is considered one of the top female amateur events in the US and The
Members Club represented itself very well in all aspects. Sam Friar had the course in great condition for the
tournament. Jeanie Atkinson did a superb job coordinating all the tournament preparation and administration of the
event. Tudy Clark did another excellent job of organizing the volunteers. Juliana Sebastian finished 41st for the event.
I would say that is pretty good for a young lady that has been playing golf for a little over 3 years. Kelli Murphy finished
10th and was in contention through the first three rounds of the event. A final round 78 wasn’t her best, but it did have
a highlight that she will always remember. Kelli made a hole-in-one on #15 during that final round. What makes it
more memorable is the fact that 8 days earlier she made a hole in one on #15. What a great accomplishment.
Please don’t tell me how hard #15 is for you, because it obviously isn’t that hard. Good luck to Kelli and Juliana as they
move on to play collegiate golf this fall. Kelli at Auburn and Juliana at Alabama-Birmingham.

The High Lob Out of Thick Bermuda Rough
Playing golf courses in the southeast, like the Fazio-designed Woodcreek Golf Course, you
will find your golf ball lying near the green in thick very healthy bermuda grass. This situation is a difficult one, particularly if the flagstick is cut close to the edge of the green. You
must find a way to hit a high lofted, soft shot that stops quickly after landing on the green.
Also, the club must have enough speed to cut through the thick bermuda grass. Here are
three things that you need to know to successfully execute this shot:
1. The Design of a Sand/Lob Wedge
2. The Modifications to your Set-up
3. The Basic Motion of the Clubhead.
First, the club to select is a Sand Wedge (54-56 degrees of loft) or a Lob Wedge (57-64 degrees of loft). These clubs have a high amount of loft and a special feature called “bounce”.
Bounce refers to the sole of the golf club. If you hold your clubhead up to eye level you will
notice that the trailing edge of the sole is 4-30 degrees lower than the leading edge. This
“bounce” allows the club to slide into the ground and avoid digging too deep. Clubs with a lot
of bounce, displace a lot of soil or sand. Whereas, clubs with a smaller bounce angle will tend
to dig a little more. In either case plan on letting the club hit the grass before the golf ball and
it will slide through the ball if you just accelerate.
Secondly, to enable the golf club to do its job of displacing some soil and sliding through, you
must make a few set-up changes. In order to increase the “bounce” and loft, you must let the
club rest open. Because the club is open, it actually aims slightly to the right, therefore, you
have to aim our body to the left of the target. Aligning “Open” also gives you a better view of
the target. In addition, since you are trying to slide the club through the grass before the ball,
it makes sense to position the ball more forward in your stance.
Finally, you must make a good motion for the club to work with the adjustments that you
have made. Your first goal is to let the club slide behind and under the ball. Visualize the ball
sitting on the center of a dollar bill. You should swing so that the club enters the grass before
the dollar and exits it after the dollar, thus splashing the ball out of the grass. Remember to
take a shallow divot. As long as you slide the clubhead under the ball and keep the clubhead
accelerating, the design of the club and your set-up changes will produce a high, soft shot. A
key to a successful shot is to swing with an even rhythm and even length strokes.
Trust your club to do the work, give it a good chance with the proper changes at address, and
splash the ball onto the green with a smooth, even rhythm. You will see those shots floating
out of these gnarly lies.
