Ahoy Semiahmoo Yacht Club Members,
even though the calendar says it is September, football
has begun again and there is a fall smell in the air, it
seems like we still have some really nice days to enjoy
on the water. I want to thank all those that volunteered
as cruise hosts for the 2014 boating season. There were
some really great cruises and fun times were had.
We still have lots of great events planned for the remainder of the year. Please try to attend and, if you
have the time, please volunteer to help out. Remember
it takes many to make these events happen.
I know that most of our members are power boaters.
So I thought this month I would include a definition of
a few different types of sailboats. I first want to say 7
knots is a fast speed, really.
Daysailer - A small sailboat without a cabin large
enough for comfortable overnight cruising
Ketch - A type of sailboat with two masts
Oh Man!! What a summer of cruising… Sunshine, flat
water and great friends… Brian and Leslie Carpenter
(FLEET CAPTAIN) and his cruise hosts have brought
us some really special fun. If you are not working
your schedule around the club cruise schedule you
are missing out. Between Brian and Lynette MorrisReade (REAR COMMODORE), who creates our special
land based events…i.e…Opening Day, Crab Feed,
Commodore’s Ball, etc., you have a really talented
team bringing like-minded folks together to share “sea
stories” and join in a sharing of life, and living it, to its
fullest. Our cruise schedule is complete for the year
and the next event will be the Crab Feed. We will be
racing Crabs. In the event that you haven’t prepared
your crab, you may pick one from our stable of fast
running crabs. The reward for winning will be mostly
limited to “BRAGGING RIGHTS,” but there may be some
side betting and some significant awards. If you miss
this event, you will have established serious question
as to your sanity. I will assume that you have made your
reservation. There are freebies for the first who sign up!

Past SYC Commodore John Black
Sadly, John passed away on the morning of September 2, 2014.
Long a member of Semiahmoo Yacht Club, John will
be remembered for his passion for sailing and maintaining the integrity of the Club. His vessel, Chase,
was a reliable sight in the Opening Day sail-past
each year.
First Mate Cathie Sackville was with John to the end.
"It appeared to be very peaceful," she recalls.
He weathered the storm and we salute Captain
Black one last time.
Jens David Magelssen, age 39, died August 18,
2014 from injuries sustained from an accidental
shooting at his residence in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Jens was born August 6, 1975 in Tacoma,
Washington to parents David and Penelope
Magelssen, and was the third of four siblings.
He graduated from Lakes High School in Lakewood, Washington in 1995 Washington, and
then moved on to Pacific Lutheran University
and University of Washington’s Tacoma Branch
where he studied Political Science and graduated in 2009. Jens served as a corrections officer
in Seattle for four years. In 2008, Jens attended
and graduated from the Police Academy and
shortly thereafter moved with his son to Honolulu, Hawaii. He joined the Honolulu Police
Force and served as an officer there for over
six years. All who knew Jens remember him as
a compassionate, humble, selfless man who
more than anything loved spending time with
his son Luke and his family and friends. Jens was
also known for his booming laugh, easy smile,
and gentle spirit.

Otter Bay Cruise, August 29, 30 & 31st
Thirteen members attended the Otter Bay Marina
Cruise on August 29, 30 & 31st. The heavy appetizer/
happy hour that was planned to be held on the flag
pole dock was canceled and convened aboard the
Karen “Z”, host boat, because of threatening winds.
On Saturday, after a hearty breakfast of fruit, pastries
and juice, eleven players entered a 9-hole best ball
scramble at the local golf course on North Pender
Island. Winner of the scramble went to Steven Mohr,
son Nick, and Brian and Leslie Carpenter. Prizes
were awarded at the potluck dinner that evening.
On Sunday after breakfast on the dock members
kayaked, played golf, used the marina’s swimming
pool or relaxed aboard their boats. That evening all
took the marina’s vans to Café at Hope Bay for dinner. Those attending were Steven Mohr and his son
Nick and wife Michele Fraser, Ed and Barb Lee plus
Barb’s sister Sherry, Brian and Leslie Carpenter, Paul
Dumbleton and Debbie Howcroft and cruise hosts
Ed and Karen Szol and Jean Marshall.
