From Friday, September 26 to Sunday, September 28, half a dozen buses full of cadets came from other units in the region to join 664 Cold Lake in the Fall Training Exercise (FTX) at the Cold Lake Air Cadet Survival Training Centre. Lessons included sustaining a fire, different types of shelters, how to build a shelter and map and compass work. The league also coordinates an open tournament for charity, which will be held late in 2014. It was in February of 2009 when I decided to leave Ontario and move to Cold Lake. To be honest, I was a little nervous as I was leaving everything and everyone that I knew to move to a small city that was almost on the other side of the country. But you know what? After five and a half years here, I’ve come to the conclusion that I made the right choice. What I find unfortunate is that not everyone feels the same way that I do when they are here. During my time here I’ve heard over and over again that people do not enjoy being in Cold Lake. The thing that I hear the most is “there’s nothing to do!” This unfortunately causes many people to resort to other methods of killing time, like consuming alcohol and drugs. I’m not sure about you, but I haven’t found that to be necessary. In fact, I’ve found that there are so many things to do here that I can’t possibly fit them all in no matter how hard that I try. And I’m not the only one! I’m constantly meeting people who are in the same situation and love living in Cold Lake. I know that there are many reasons why some people are always busy enjoying themselves while others are not. But the main reason is that many people just are not aware of what Cold Lake has to offer. He challenged me to become encouraging, to greet life with a smile, and spread love as if it were on fire. I try to carry this as an inspiration in serving Cold Lake and in serving the military. Since coming to Cold Lake I have noted that holding one’s head up can be a daunting thing. The community has many challenges but one thing that I love about this place is its proximity to nature. I look upon the land and see the growth of trees; I smell the earthy life that surrounds us all.
