Loving Cold Lake:
How Do You Spend Your Time?
Derek Coe,

Director
Jeff Gaye
Inter-Section Volleyball League Vice-President
Kevin Kiely launches the ceremonial first serve
of the 2014-2015 season. Noon-hour volleyball is a
popular recreational sport at 4 Wing, with 12 teams
competing over six months for the league title. The
league also coordinates an open tournament for
charity, which will be held late in 2014.
It was in February
of 2009 when I decided
to leave Ontario and
move to Cold Lake. To
be honest, I was a little
nervous as I was leaving
everything and everyone
that I knew to move to a
small city that was almost
on the other side of the
country. But you know
what? After five and a
half years here, I’ve come
to the conclusion that I
made the right choice.
What
I
find
unfortunate is that not
everyone feels the same
way that I do when they
are here. During my time
here I’ve heard over and
over again that people do
not enjoy being in Cold
Lake. The thing that I
hear the most is “there’s
nothing to do!” This
unfortunately
causes
many people to resort to
other methods of killing
time, like consuming
alcohol and drugs.
I’m not sure about
you, but I haven’t found
that to be necessary. In
fact, I’ve found that there
are so many things to do
here that I can’t possibly
fit them all in no matter
how hard that I try. And
I’m not the only one!
I’m constantly meeting
people who are in the
same situation and love
living in Cold Lake.
I know that there
are many reasons why
some people are always
busy enjoying themselves
while others are not. But
the main reason is that
many people just are not
aware of what Cold Lake
has to offer. Granted, it’s
not like Edmonton or
other large cities where
there are so many things
at your fingertips, but
there are many big-city
amenities that also exist
in Cold Lake.
For instance, the

Money Smarts: Save, Don’t Spend

Is it expensive to live

“Absolutely,” says Blair

“So you have to adjust. You
have to do smart things.”
Taylor says there are
simple ways to make sure
you have some money in
the bank at the end of

there’s help available.
“People think ‘I can

Since coming to Cold
Lake I have noted that
holding one’s head up
can be a daunting thing.
The community has
many challenges but one
thing that I love about
this place is its proximity
to nature. I look upon the
land and see the growth
of trees; I smell the
earthy life that surrounds
us all. These things
I love so intrinsically
that a moment without
this hope is a feeling
that impoverishes my
existence. I choose to love
Cold Lake because I love
life. This sort of happiness
is worked upon. It does

HOROSCOPES
Capricorn - December 22 - January 19
You’ve got a lot on your plate these days, Capricorn. You are
not the only one. Take comfort in that fact. A financial review
goes better than expected.
Aquarius - January 20 - February 18
You can be quite the perfectionist, Aquarius. This week, you will
have to learn to live with less as all hands will be called up on
deck. Relax. Everything will be fine.
Pisces - February 19 - March 20
Baloney, Pisces. Take what you hear this week with a grain of
salt. A change in guard at work is no reason for panic. A date is
set. Start the planning.
Aries - March 21 - April 19
Arrogant Aries. Nah, not you. However, if you want to get
your due, you are going to have to toot your own horn. An
acquaintance makes a proposal.
Taurus - April 20 - May 20
Concerns grow with an increase in the workload. Take it easy,
Taurus. It looks worse than it is. A faceoff with a loved one
brings about the results hoped for.
Gemini - May 21 - June 21
An undercover operation goes off without a hitch, and travel
plans are made. Don’t forget to pack your camera, Gemini.
News from home ends in giggles.
Cancer - June 22 - July 22
Get a move on, Cancer. There is no time to waste. A lack of
discretion on the part of a friend lands them in hot water. Be
supportive, but don’t bail them out.
Leo - July 23 - August 22
All kidding aside, Leo. The pressure is on. Do not disappoint. A
friend drops out of a production. Someone you least expect will
step in to help.
Virgo - August 23 - September 22
Raise the alarms, Virgo. Something is up at home. It might be
good. It might be bad. A minor loss in income results in more
free time. Use it wisely.
Libra - September 23 - October 22
You’re a true friend, Libra, and your loyalty will be rewarded
this week. A chapter closes at work. Be grateful. A challenge is
accepted.
Scorpio - October 23 - November 21
A health crisis comes to an end for a friend. Celebrate with
a night out, Scorpio. Travel plans must be put on hold when
extended family drop by unexpectedly.
Sagittarius - November 22 - December 21
Decompress, Sagittarius. You’ve been far too busy as of late.
It’s time to take it easy and catch up on everything you’ve been
missing. Start with a youngster.
