Priority is to recover
from injuries: Mary Kom
BANGALORE, Oct 16 : Still basking in the glow of her Asian
Games gold medal, Mary Kom feels her first priority is to recover
from injuries, on which hinges her participation in next month’s
World championships. “After the Asian Games, I had many small
injuries,” the boxer said here on Wednesday.
“Right now my hamstring is bothering me. My hand was
an issue earlier. My first aim is to get that treated. Only if I
am able to recover fully will I take part in the Worlds. I’m not
sure yet.”
The AIBA women’s World boxing championships will be
held in Jeju, South Korea, from November 13 to 25.
But aside from her injuries, the overall standard of fitness
had not dipped even with age, Mary Kom felt.
“I was surprised at this Asiad, I was much fitter than I was
at the Olympics. I really don’t know how. There must be
something. Maybe I had good supplements,” she said.
The 31-year-old was in the city to announce the eighth
edition of the SBI Bengaluru Midnight Marathon.
She had the audience in thrall, speaking of her early life and
struggles.
Referring to the meeting with the Prime Minister on Tuesday, Mary said: “I was delivering the vote of thanks yesterday

Atletico de Kolkata swamp NEUFC 2-0
GUWAHATI, Oct 16
The 10-man Atletico de Kolkata
lived up to their reputation as
they outplayed hosts NorthEast
United FC 2-0 to notch up their
second consecutive win in the
ongoing Indian Super League
(ISL), here on Thursday.
Two straight shots by
Ethiopian striker Fikru Tefera
Lemessa and Czech midfielder Jakub Podany gave the
Sourav Ganguly co-owned
Kolkata another three points
after humbling Mumbai FC
3-0 in the tournament-opener
on Sunday. Fikru put league
leaders Kolkata ahead with
his 15th minute strike and
carried on the lead till regulation time. Jakub then slotted
home a second in injury time
to seal the game for Kolkata.
The team was reduced to
10-men in the 82nd minute
after Borja Fernandez got the
second yellow card, forcing
him to leave the field. But the
team kept their composure to
hold on to a comfortable win.
Though Fernandez’s sending off did lead to a
commotion and a bit of a
heated discussion with the
referee but the tempers soon
calmed down and play resumed. Coach Antonio Lopez
Habas defended the team’s
behaviour.
“We need to check the videos. Many many such actions
take place on the field. We
are a professional team. We
must defend our interest in
the match,” Habas said.
The Kolkata team later also
got couple of opportunities
for goals, but NorthEast goalkeeper Alexandros Tzorvas of
Greece foiled their attempts.
The John Abraham co-
owned NorthEast United also
got a few chances during the
first half but could not convert them.
Spanish recruit Koke, who
scored the lone winning goal
in the teams’ first match
against Kerala Blasters, could
not convert a direct shot in
the 51st minute into a goal.
NorthEast coach Ricki
Herbert was disappointed but
did well to put up a brave
front in the post-match
presser.
“We are disappointed with
the performance despite being
a good team. I’m happy with
the performance of my boys.
We had so much chance in
the front but could not convert them into goals. We are
very good side. We need to
be better. It’s going to be an
interesting league,” he said
after the defeat. –– PTI

Pep Guardiola says he wants
to manage Manchester United
File: Pep Guardiola
NEW DELHI, Oct 16
Pep Guardiola said that he
wants to manage Manchester
United at some point in his
career. According to a new
book on the Spaniard’s first
season at Bayern Munich,
Guardiola had admitted to being
enthralled by the atmosphere
and set-up at Old Trafford.
Written by his close friend
and sports journalist, Marti
Perarnau, “In Pep Confidential: The Inside Story of Pep
Guardiola’s First Season at
Bayern Munich” chronicles
the former Barcelona manag-
er’s title winning first season
at Allianz Arena.
In the book, Perarnau
claims that while watching a
Champions League match in
2011 at Old Trafford,
Guardiola was impressed by
United and was quoted saying to his personal assistant
Manuel Estiarte, “I like this
atmosphere. I could see myself coaching here one day”.
Guardiola was indeed
linked to United, as a replacement for the legendary Sir
Alex Ferguson and also after
his hand-picked heir David
Moyes was sacked within a
season. But the Spaniard instead move to Germany
following a year-long sabbatical, where he is contracted till
the end of 2016.
Perarnau further claims in
the book that, Guardiola had
already agreed a move to
Bayern Munich in December
2012, even before Ferguson
had announced his retirement.
